The long string at the 30 minute mark looks like a horsehair worm. They are a parasite but not to humans. Great adventure and great videos! Makes me anxious for spring to get here so I can get out on the water again and maybe have a bit smaller adventure.
Awesome video -- thanks for the upload! @30:09 I believe that is a horsehair worm! A parasitic worm, though it doesn't feed on humans but small insects
That is a horsehair worm, i believe. I saw one last summer here in Maine that was almost clear. I thought it was a piece of mono, tried to pick it up, and it started to swim away. Surprised the heck out of me.
as I am watching this and I think wow! these guys are working their tails off. I stop and eat some more chips and salsa and drink some of my beer. thanks for making my winter enjoyable!!!!!!!!
Great story-telling and creating an atmosphere of real adventure through the music, commentary and campsite patter. Part of the narrative is the team work aspect... I'm liking the empathy displayed within the team such as when Noah just listens and doesn't talk... so much more genuine than quick-fire repartee that doesn't really belong in this context. The grand scale of nature should be teaching us to STFU now and then. Bravo!
Another awesome video. I love how your "humour" changes as you get tired. Nudes via InReach, mixed nuts, serenading and harmonicas!!! 🙂 Love seeing you guys surviving the bushwhacking and still enjoying your adventure.
Sounds like a missed opportunity to have called this series “the trip of mixed nuts” 😉. Great as always guys- giving me all the feels missing the summer tripping season
Your moss toilet paper is a moss from sphagnum family. We have them also in Finland in mossy forests and bogs. Nice footage of your trip, like it alot.
What a great antidote to current events. Love seeing the beauty of the back country that I'll most likely never get to see. Great filming and editing and brings me back to my canoe camping trips to La Verendrye. Thanks for sharing.
Crunching through the woods looks exhausting and exhilarating, Lining the river looks just as hard. The countryside is majestic looking. I'm excited for the next one. Another week to wait.
Thanks so much Noah and Matt! Love watching you persevere and love the beauty. We will never make it there so it is great to see through your eyes and lenses! John and Leslie!
Variety is the spice of life. Glad it was a mixed bag out there, still some heavy slogging but it wouldn't be a Northern Scavengers video without some type B fun.
Epic scenery, food, and paddling. Makes me so nervous watching you’s walk in the rapids like that. So easy to slip or get your foot pinned in rocks. Pretty amazing trip so far. Keep up the hard work.😘
We had a hunting/fishing camp in Quebec's boreal forest, north of Montreal. Arriving by float plane, the first trip of the year was always a gamble - would there be a tree that fell on the roof; did a bear get in; did some low-life leave the door open? Which reminds me, on crown land , camps had to remain unlocked. Good on you for reporting it.
Always love your vids, and the little tidbits of info sprinkled in like lining and tracking your canoe was great. I don't know what that weird bug thing was but it reminded me of those parasites that take over insects and force them to water where the parasite then leaves their body. You can see UA-cam videos of it.
"To boldly go where no man has gone before" Just you and the blackflies, bushwhacking together. BTW I think the long thin "worm" is a Horsehair Worm a type of nematode.
As a child growing up in Northern Ontario I remember seeing those long strings in the water. I was told they are called Horse Hairs and the story I was told was they are like a leach or blood sucker, can wrap around your leg and dig in. I hope it was just a story but it just might be true.
You're close. They're called Horsehair worm. They're harmless though, except to the large insects (grasshoppers, crickets) they grow in, as a parasite. When the insect gets thirsty and goes to a river or stream to drink, the worm leaves their body.
Really gripping, well shot and edited - great work! These videos are a must-watch every week. The only suggestion I'd have would be to include maps at intervals so we can see where you are. It would also be nice to know when this was happening (July? August?) & a little more information on daily temperatures.
always learning... this gives a whole new meaning to my understanding of the watershed system and this height of land concept... i always thought it was a mountain range type environment.. now i get it ( or do i ) that the watershed is a swampy divide that marks the flow of water direction ( with mountains but with lots of flat marshy land ) .....
Love Your Channel!!!,The Canadian Wilderness has Some of The World's Most Stunning Natural Beauty!!!,I Hope that this Yankee will Someday Get to See it in Person!!!,I Have Always wanted to Visit Algonquin Provincinial Park in Southern Ontario, and Of Course The Northwest Territory and The Great Nahanni, and Virginia Falls, and All of British Columbia!,There's Just So Much Natural Beauty all Over Canada!!!!
Seen bear damage at a wilderness cabin near Gander. The bear grabbed the door frame near the top and took out the whole door box, nails and all. went inside and tore up everything, cupboards off the walls, and ripped the mattresses to shreds. Was up in Saglek Labrador in the 90's with the military and a Polar bear tore the door off a Coast Guard helicopter over night, and chewed up the handle on the collective. Test every scent!
I wonder if the orange tape came from Jim Braid as he took epic solo adventure through some those areas, if my memory is correct. Great song Love the harmonica! Brave souls you two are, then to video your travels to share with the world.... Applause 👋🎉❤️
Dudes where is your machete? Can’t busy whack without it. I love your dogged determination in getting through. Thank you for the incredible footage. Definitely gnarly for sure. But you always keep it upbeat no matter the miserable conditions

I am absolutely loving this series! This is a prime example of why I've never regretted cancelling cable TV.
Awesome video -- thanks for the upload! @30:09 I believe that is a horsehair worm! A parasitic worm, though it doesn't feed on humans but small insects
Awesome video again.

Here from Xander Budnicks recommendation, awesome content!
BRUTAL BOYS!
That was another fantastic episode.
I think the flagging tape on that portage was left by either Justin Barbour or Jim Baird 🤣🤣🤣
And, the EPICNESS continues!!
That is a horsehair worm, i believe. I saw one last summer here in Maine that was almost clear. I thought it was a piece of mono, tried to pick it up, and it started to swim away. Surprised the heck out of me.
I’ll second that. Horsehair worm.
Great episode. The bear break in and then the mixed nuts. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Noah, sure was nice hearing you sing. Great video guys.
Those beach campsites are a real gift.

Sounds like a missed opportunity to have called this series “the trip of mixed nuts” 😉. Great as always guys- giving me all the feels missing the summer tripping season

Type B fun but worth it to make this trip do-able. I am loving this trip so far, thank you.
Just got recommended this video. It's 1 AM so tomorrow after work i'll watch the first episodes. Saw a bit of this video and i really liked it 😁👍
Well that looked like it took a lot of sheer will and determination. And grace, too.

Crunching through the woods looks exhausting and exhilarating, Lining the river looks just as hard. The countryside is majestic looking. I'm excited for the next one. Another week to wait.
Boys, you both have outdone yourself.. so epic, so beautiful and so hard.. truly awesome
Did you get a hold of the owners of the bear trashed camp?
Also would be interested in knowing this.
We did! We caught them a few weeks before they were heading to the camp.
You can tell it's a tough stretch when there's that many beeped words! Great job - loving it.

Ya baby boy ! Great episode, mentally I’d be out a few days ago. Ya’ll are nuts

Wow, I thought it was bad before. What a slog.
I think I might know a guy that used to fish at that lodge

Great video as usual. These epic trips are what I am looking to do in the next few years once retired fully. Be safe guys
Really enjoying the series. Not sure what was worse navigating the bog or those bushwack portages. Your a couple of tough dudes.
Always love your vids, and the little tidbits of info sprinkled in like lining and tracking your canoe was great.

Crazy tough few days for you guys but you lined the canoe like champs. And love the excitement over moss tp lol!

haha maybe! Our theory was there was a camp somewhere on the lake.
Mucho excellente porfavor!
That string in the lake was a horse hair worm. Harmless to humans.
I’ve seen them here in Labrador in black brown and white colours. Love the videos guys!
Hi guys, You are awesome. And that thing you saw in the water is a horsehair worm, Nematomorpha. It is harmless for humans. :)
Lads are warriors
Great story editing continues. Upstream...

Thanks Jacqueline !
