I know I have yet to start (will be doing so soon) but go with the rule of 100 videos as a start and grow as you go. This is a marathon lifestyle, than more of a sprint; but hey. It pays :). Remember a year ago watching you recommend cameras and saying to start with what you have....I remember wondering how you guys get all these cameras and stuff.
Fast forward to today and here I am with a Canon M50 and an EOS R I just got with a pretty good collection of lenses, and a Mavic 2 Pro!
It definitely didn't happen overnight. I started with the M50 a kit lens and then I just started acquiring lenses and everything slowly each month with the goal of going Full Frame...and I just got my EOS R and I would say that I made it and definitely started! Loving it and it's all because of you and Pete. Thanks!
For everyone trying to get started, just do it! It doesn't happen over night but if you start with something simple you definitely can work your way up!

I'm using the Canon M50, it's size and quality is really really great, add external mic, screen flips around, changeable lenses and the price is super affordable!

Matti, but what about Fuji XT4? Hass all those bells & whistles, IBIS, flip-out, a lot of nice lens options and costs just like the R?
When we first started making videos it was with a GoPro. We had won a GoPro and it was the only camera with video capabilities that we had when we became interested in filming our travels. It suited us really well for a little while, but we have really enjoyed upgrading to the Canon EOS 250D. It's our first DLSR so it has been a nice easy to use camera to get us used to using a DSLR. It has the flip out screen which we were really missing on the GoPro and we bought a separate wide angle lens specifically for vlogging. As you explained, we really didn't want to look like two floating heads haha 😂.

Went from camera phones to an X-T3, which was my first step to interchangeable lens camera and now I've upgraded to an X-T4. Fujifilm is just a better starting point due to the prices of the lens and does 4k 60fps 200/mbs internally. Canon RF lenses are just way too expensive for the average person.
Which focal length do you like for talking head/at desk filming?
I would like to see a review of the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 ART lens with the EOS R for the vlogging. I'm thinking of buying the EOS R5 when it comes out but I haven't decided what lens to buy with it. The current lens I have is the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 but I have on an APS-C sensor.

I went to buy that one with the lens after Matti's review.
I only it could have a flat profile ... 90D would be a killer with rather cheap lenses around . But i feel once you've touched FF you can never go back 😅 ... Still my 90D Will do the job until I can get a Eos R

Is it really a good idea to have the RP with the EFS 10-18mm? That´s a crop sensor lense... I´m not sure about that
I think he’s saying you can put it on the EF adapter. But the 10-18 might be too wide on full frame. You might get a vignette. I think the 17-40 would be good though
Works fine on my RP, it just lowers the megapixels to 10M, but it looks fine to be honest.

Can you record automatically and directly the EOS Video on your PC? And if so, how?
I just don't want to record on the camera memory card and then copy the file to the PC.
All of my UA-cam videos are on my cellphone! And it got me 170 subscribers in the last few weeks! Glad a bigger UA-camr agrees about using the cellphone to start off!

Sony A6400, A6100, or A6600 for a vlogging camera w/ interchangeable lens capability.
Sony RX100 Mark V/VA or ZV-1 for minimalistic small form factor vlogging.
Does the EFS adapted to RF mount work? I know that EFS doesn't work on regular EF.
Now in June 2020, do you think that it would be wise to buy R NOW (some discounts) as R5 and R6 are looming - do you think that the price of the R will drop significantly? Or is the R6 possibly a better value for an amateur?
For lower budget, I recommend a phone or GoPro (in linear mode) for the convenience and low price.
For mid budget, I recommend the Canon 80D + Sigma 17-50/2.8 or the Fuji X-T200 + Fuji 18-55/2.8-4, since you can get these kits for under $1,000. For higher budget, I recommend the Fuji X-T4 or Canon R.
Why Canon/Fuji? Both have good autofocus, both have great colors (to save editing time), and both have solid lens options with upgrade paths.
Eos R seems too expensive, what do you think about Canon 90d?

Matti, what do you think about semi-professional camcorders? Maybe jvc, canon, sony or panasonic? I also used mirrorless camera, but few days before i found old vhs camera sony and this was soooo easy and fun:)

everyone who has already looked for vlog cameras has already thought of their smartphones. nobody is silly. But searching for a hybrid camera almost a month, I realize that we have to define what we want in a camera and how we are going to use it efficiently. But one thing is for sure, everyone knows they can use their smartphones. Very good your videos bro. (btw your video of the a6400 made me not buy it because it was an excellent real world review). The best-modern-compact for the moment is a6600 but rollingshutter maybe is a issue.
Sony’s menu I can get used to with the fn menu and shortcut buttons but a flip screen is 100% a must have for this stuff. I fear that they will not put a flip screen on their full frame and say “if you want that, get the ZV1” 🤯

Hi Matti, I am thinking about buying a camera for Vlogging, but when we say best Vlogging cameras, are we talking about cameras for videos made in an interior and steady static on a tripod? Or do we also include Vlogging outside with exterior light, moving body and objects? I have been doubting in between Canon EOS R and Panasonic GH5 because IBIs, Autofocus and Image quality, and it looks like opinions bounce in between them but non of them is the perfect camera for everything. Also they are both around same price, even though Canon EOS R is quite recent in comparison with GH5 from few years ago. I wanted to ask for your opinion as I really value your work and experience. My idea is to be able to film videos inside and outside, as for example...who is showing how to train tricks to a dog (so you can be open wide shot and you move from side to side, camera on a tripod), so I feel autofocus is very important for those videos (where Panasonic GH5 looks like autofocus is not very reliable), but then it will be also very important to be able to have a nice shoots more cinematic and stable while walking (good in build image stabilization - where Canon don't have it in body you need that just on the lenses). What would you recommend me to do? I will really appreciate your help. Thank you very much in advance

I use a canon 80d & have used a m50 and I often use a GoPro 8 for runs ect. compact cameras aren't really on my radar at the moment. its hard to go back to smaller cameras once you get a feel for the big boys.
I’d much rather go for the Canon 90D for vlogging instead of the eos RP. 90D with the Ef-s 10-18mm lens and you’re in business. Or the Sony a6600 with the Sigma 16mm 1.4.

Spot on. Canon is number 1 for vlogging right now, not because they do a lot of things particularly well, but because the others do things particularly badly....For me a vlogging camera 1. Needs to handable and usable (small + simple to use), 2. Have a flip out screen, 3. Good quality codec and color 5. Smooth autofocus, 6. Audio-In 7. Good stabalization.

Matti, I have a GH5, I can’t really afford to change it.
Can I make it work for me? I do have the Sigma 18-35 on a 0.71 speed booster.
I don’t want to speak for Matti, but I think he would say that the only downside of the GH5 is its autofocus (and 2x crop). But it’s a great camera if you don’t need autofocus or to get super wide. Plus, amazing IBIS. Great for weddings for example! I think you could easily make it work for you!
Steven Kralovec Thanks for the reply man. I bought it long before thinking about vlogging and I was planning on mainly using manual focus. So at the time, that was not a concern for me. But it’s autofocus does suck compared to say the Canons. With the 0.71x metabones speed booster on there I can get a wide enough shot. It’s never going to match up to full frame, but it is a work around and with the Sigma 18-35 I can get sort of a 24mm look. Not too bad for an MFT sensor. It is amazing for B-Roll and I really love it.

Currently using a Canon M50 with a 11-22 mm lens. I like it for the price/value ratio (dual pixel autofocus, mirrorless, external audio mic outlet, wireless compatibility with my phone), and the biggest reason is that it's pretty newbie user friendly (aka me).
I am using at the moment canon g7 mark iii but I can hear a noises when I play the video. How can I fix this pls? Is it about the settings? I am new to vlogging. Also camera is not focusing, is it about the settings too?

Pretty sure you couldn't use the 10-18mm on the EOS RP, as it's EF-S and they're only compatible with APS-C aren't they?
Canon says it'll work and the camera will automatically adjust for a cropped image when using Ef-s and the adaptor on a full frame.

Hey Matti, thanks for the video (and all of them). I'm looking at getting a camera to start on UA-cam filmmaking and I am struggling to put together a budget. For super tight budget options, why not a Canon 250d/SL3 with the 10-18 STM? Seems the best bang for buck at the bottom end.
Also, with the mini mic, have you tried the Boya/Movo mini shotgun mic? It's fairly identical to the rode but is cheaper, slightly different frequency range, and has a slightly higher sensitivity, so you can drop the level a little in the camera.
@@docostories I was struggling with some of the shortcomings of my smartphone (Galaxy S7) with the biggest being lack of real controls on the selfie camera, making the selfie and main camera footage look very different. But just a couple of days ago I re-looked at the camera apps around (after a break of a couple of years) and now I've discovered a bunch of apps that allow a lot more control on the selfie camera. So now I'm going to get some lens and filter adapters for the phone and I should be good to go. :-)

I can't believe you glossed over APS-C cameras like the Canon M50 or the Canon 80D. Those are some of the most cost effective & practical recommendations for people starting out with vlogging

For most people, it would be hard to beat the Canon M50 on sale sometimes for $500 with EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens for $400, a Rode Video micro for $60 and then a few spare batteries and you are in the whole package for right at $1,000. Fast, light, compact, easy to use and it pounds out some very respectable footage.

I though the EF-S lenses wouldn't work with the full frame sesors as the image circle is only big enough for APS-C sensors, or does the lens adaptor expand the image circle?
The R and RP will give you a cropped readout with like ~10 megapixels. That's enough to record 4K (8megapixels). Pictures will have less resolution though by the factor of the crop factors squared -> like ~10MP instead of 26MP, which is approximately a factor of 2,56, which is 1,6*1,6

From iphone to EOS RP? What about the M50? Much cheaper, much cheaper lenses. You can adapt for EF and EF-S glass.
Also EF-S 10-18mm... won't that only be usable at the long end? 10mm will surely vignette horrifically.

What about Canon M50 price is about 600$ can have a sigma 16mm lens fo nice wide angle and with 1.4 ??? its lighter for budget that is not to high? i do want the RP very much but... might be a little out of my budget
When on the go, I use the DJI Osmo Pocket. Audio isn't great but it does have facetracking, is basically a pocket gimball and small as heck. Also does a lot of cool shots like timelapses and slowmotion

What Matti means is apart from a smart phone, if it's not full frame then it's not a good vlogging camera. I say add Fuji XT4, Canon M50, Sony A6600/a6400 and Canon 90D as well.
At the moment I'm using a Canon SL2 with a movo vxr 10 mic and just got a new moukey mic.. Both cheaper mics but the quality I think is there.. Maybe a video idea for you cheaper mics vs more expensive.. I am also thinking about getting the Canon M50 for the size..

Personally, if you want a small compact camera I think the Powershot Canon G7X Mark II is gonna be it. DSLR wise, I’m not quite sure, but everyone keeps on saying the Canon M50, so I’m assuming you should go for that. But personally, I think the best starter camera for vlogging would be the G7X because it’s nice, it’s small, it’s compact, it has a nice lense and nice audio, so I personally think that would be the best starter option.

Hi, thanks to share your interesting video. I have never used a microphone for my Lumix GH5, also because it has a good mic. incorporated. Please let me understand, this is not a criticism. If you are vloging, to shoot only a few minutes where the microphone is actually useful in a working day, but unfortunately you have to leave it on the camera all the time causing you only some annoyance. My question: how useful do you see it to those who do not do any interviews, etc. etc.? Thanks for your thought.
