Omar is a amazing player. I worked backstage on this gig. I was a student at the drummers collective in 1991, and they asked me if I wanted to help out backstage and see the gig from there. Incredible lineup : Omar, Steve Smith, Marvin " smitty " Smith ( teacher at dc ), Neil Peart and Will Calhoun + solo performance from Max Roach. But Omar sounded best on stage, actually the only time the rest of the band having big smiles on their faces. Nice memory.

wow ! excellent report of an excellent memory of an excellent event ! my compliments ! May I ask: did Omar's level of playing that nite for you reflect his ability to relax so well, with whatever group he's in..if not, what would you put it down to ? that's the thing I like about his loose and fluid playing... I've always rated and loved him, even tho' he's not really a big-band player, more a big gospel/pop group type musician, leading yet following and full of love and creativity... thanks for that !

@@doce7606 Yes Omar really showed us what it means to play within the music, very relaxed and very confident. During the night we heard all those amazing drummers with blazing chops. I remember when Smitty Smith and Steve Smith trading solos, they took the competition very serious, it was everything except relaxed. When Omar played I danced and the band smiled. He is such a well rounded player, even if he´s not a first call for big bands, he can make any music sound good. And when you get down to it...its what its all about.

@@fekalier this is communicating an elusive concept in music apprehension/learning, that the listener detects fear or aggression, and hears a less pleasing sound than from another who is relaxed, content, and having fun, even if more 'within themselves'. thanks

I don't know if he is the greatest drummer ever, but he did the greatest drum solo I ever saw, believe it or not, with Sting in 1985. I've seen most of the old timers (Buddy, Elvin, etc) but his solo that night put me on the ground.

A top drummer showcase and a super soprano solo helps, but has sir heard the unbelievably good (for its day - presumably condenser mics) live in Paris (it says birdland) version of Thad Jones' 'Counterblock' played by the legendary Basie band (I think 1959 but post says 1960)... ua-cam.com/video/oJszwIdOe08/v-deo.html The total power balance with the thump in the bass and the sizzling horns, and the kit ! sounds like Jayzee's cat at MSG or wherever.. amazing !! btw, takes two choruses to get going lol... peace and love

I first heard Omar on Sting's "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" album & I've loved his playing ever since. Sting released a live double cd from the tour for that first album called "Bring On The Night." It has Kenny Kirkland on keys, Daryl Jones on bass, Branford Marsalis on saxes, & of course Omar on drums. It came out in the mid-80's & it still knocks me out to this day. There's also a dvd with the same name. Be sure to check out Omar on a tune called, "I Burn For You." Different version on cd.
