Omar's "inner" notes (the little 16th or 32nd accents and ghost notes) are totally f**king incredible, like no one else. It is like he is always playing some kind of 4 minute long syncopated drum roll that sounds so. damn. good!

First time I had ever heard of and saw Omar Hakim was around the late 80's when he smashed it up with Sting performing, 'Burn For you' been a fan ever since. At one point the late Kenny Kirkland can be seen chuckling at how Omar Hakim was absolutely blistering the skins. Every time I watch the video I get chills. Big up OH!

I've seen him play his first public gig in NY with Weather Report at the Palladium in June 1982. He was 23 years old. He was so ecstatic they let him play the longest solo ever. The place was on fire. Victor Bailey was on bass.
Omar is one of the greatest of all times drummers. His playing on Sting's 'Bring On The Night' and John Scofield's 'Still Warm' is absolutely amazing.

I saw them in 1998, at the old Trammps, in NYC! Omar was double-timing off the hi hat! His lock in the groove that night stole the show!
And on bass is the great Barry Johnson. Jamaica Boy like Marcus. Check them Lenny White, twennynine joints like Fancy Dancer! And the Luther man, Fonzi Thornton singing background.
He plays with joy ! This is the difference.

Nile Rogers is sooooo fkn cool. I remember the night Steve wouldn't let him in studio 54, it was fkn unbelievable, especially since he had the #number 1 hit on the charts at the time and they were playing it over and over in Steve's club.
Such a musical, techical drum solo with plenty of power. Great!
Omar is still playing at the highest level...wow. Actually he had a few years between (the public world) fame of Steve Gadd and the rise of Dave Weckl where he was the drummer everybody talked about. He played with Weather report, Sanborn, Sting, David Bowie, Brian Ferry......
I was seriously mesmerized watching this. Like snapped back to reality when Nile came back on the mic. That was nuts!
Weird thing to mention, but I always noticed that he has the best posture of any drummer I've seen, and I've always thought it's part of his sound. He plays with incredible authority!
Not a weird thing to mention at all, my friend! A drummer can have great hands and amazing stick control, but without good posture his pedal work will have a hard time keeping up.
Omar's 'authority' starts with perfect balance from his upright posture (listen to that bass drum!) and ends - after an awful lot of hard work - with a telephone that never stops ringing. :-)

As someone else has already commented, that doesn't seem weird at all. I love watching how drummers move - and how they move does somehow seem connected with their sound.

When Kate Bush returned to the stage after 30 years absence, she chose Omar for her band. His 'feel' and presence are masterful but he never overpowers the other musicians and lets everyone be heard. Tasteful, disciplined and creatively ON the beat every second.

I was on a Sting concert many years ago in Stockholm. Hakim had a solo and dropped two sticks during that solo. Remember seing them flying........ But he picked up new ones and the solo wasn't interrupted at all. Magic.
