This is a memorial concert with guest drummers. If they wanted only jazz drummers Will Calhoun would never be there. The beauty lies on different styles adding to the tunes. And Will showed his way wonderfully and respectfully.
You guys need to do your homework. Will Calhoun is just as much a jazz drummer as he is a rock drummer. Over the years he's proven himself as a great jazz drummer, especially on his latest solo album.
Well, according to Wikipedia, Will has recorded several jazz albums as a leader, and has appeared as a sideman with a diverse group of acclaimed artists, including Pharoah Sanders, B.B. King, Herb Alpert, Dr. John, Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Marcus Miller, Public Enemy, and Ronnie Wood. Although I would agree that he's most at home playing hard rock.
Will Calhoun is easely the best drummer in the world, this video isn't showing his technique at all, watch him play impossible polyryhtyms and solos over polyrhythims, I have never seen something that come close to that
What he's playing when the band comes in with him after the solo, I can't figure it out. Usually I can break down each limb, find a pattern, whatever. The hell is he playing?
And Buddy did what almost every performance??? Damn near every video I've seen of buddy he was drumming to please himself, then the audience. Furthermore, if you watch the burning for buddy concert series all the drummer take solos, or battle each other much like Buddy did.
what a damn good drummer. oh the nineties.
I love the subtle Blues for Big Sid reference midway through

Phrasing Max Roach's 'For Big Sid' quite a bit in his opening solo.
Interview with WILL CALHOUN, JUNGLE FUNK, Living Colour in Poland (Drum Fest Opole 2013)
I wrote the a transcription for the drum part to this song if anyone wants it

Well this video also is over 20 years old. His playing has taken a whole new direction in that time.
It’s weird to see him without his long hair
@Americant47 Steve smith is just a technican he seems to have lost all that feel he had when he was young

@Americant47 You need to hear Will play Jazz.. See these guys are asked to play a certain way
when it comes to these things.
Check out Simon Philips version of dancing men from burning for budy 1. That tune is fiery filth.
Does anyone know the name of this song?
No exit.
November Rain
Ladies and gentlemen... EDDIE MURPHY!

9/8 Time signature.
It's some kind of bembè, afrocuban stuff.
if you cant hear the swing in hip-hop or rhythm and blues then you clearly don't understand African-american music let alone jazz.
Self satisfaction drumming.

すごいのか?
Holy shit! That was terrible! Really surprising! Besides can't play jazz, that was a poor solo. I guess he's not as good as he's been made out to be.
Either show us how it should be done or shut up!
It's 1991 dude... People evolve and change their styles.. Will is a great drummer.
@@Gretchluver1 I couldn't agree with you more. Will Calhoun is very well versed rhythmically.
@@Gretchluver1 Nothing kills me more than Joe nobody keyboard wannabe harshly criticizing a well known phenomenal musician.
And I guess that your opinion is certainly also a very poor one.
Rock drummers lack the skill set and proficiency to solo artistically.
And you've played with whom??? Have you seen his body of work?
That sucked
Why did it suck? Was it not your flavor of music? Was a certain instrument overpowering everything else? Don't like the way the drums sounded?
