Great diagnosis Dave, the older Toyota and Peugeot citroen models used to be good for clutch problems when the retaining straps cracked on the pressure plate , I'm with you on the release bearing , nothing wrong with a bit if gental lube 😉, mr clutch man Kevin uses red brake rubber grease on doing his clutch jobs , still waiting to use the motorhome (hmrc , dvla ) all ready to go from my end , but still on French plates on my drive 👍👍
Great job Dave! We see alot of Peugeot Citroen Toyota when servicing the clutch cable is tight and has probably never seen adjustment not good leaving load on clutch all the time, will bring on early release bearing failure as well as clutch itself, we always lightly grease input shaft and clutch release bearing sleeve and fork arm bushes will help keep the clutch smoother for longer.
Good job Dave. Your Columbo investigation says the previous workshop didn't go any further that the clutch cable assembly, and they screwed up on that. Gearbox off, Grand job. I'd grease it instinctively, as mentioned a very light film.

Did a flywheel on a Renault Master (2015) and O.E. as removed was LuK but not available from LuK; genuine Renault only and very expensive at £550+vat. The cynic in me says Renault have a deal with LuK to not supply the part in the aftermarket. Maybe for the first 7 or 8 years at least.

I did one of these for a customer today. The one ear/tab of the release bearing had sheared and broken. The fork itself was ok, but I polished it up smooth on the rounded surfaces that 'roll' against the release bearing ears. The aftermarket release bearing I got in the clutch kit (LUK I think?) looked a much better design. I scotchbrited then polished smooth the cylinder part of the casting which the release bearing surrounds and slides upon. Also of note, the shaft was very rusty and stiff. It looked like the seal around the top had gone and was allowing water ingress as these are a vertical shaft. I polished up the shaft surfaces where they meet the bushes. I swapped the bushes and the seal. All three plus a new clip came to 23 quid from Toyota proper. (My normal parts guys could get the clutch kit but not the seals and bushes). Pedal feels ok at the moment. I just provisionally adjusted it to put the clutch pedal inline with the brake pedal, but the specific tsb and adjustment data is available online. I've got to finish it tomorrow. I'll let you know if I have it come back to me. :)
I wonder why the instruction manual says not to lightly grease that shaft. Bare metal on metal is never a good idea. Do you know what other manufacturers say about this?

Hi. I have the same issue, Peugeot 108 21k. Convinced the cable was at fault but now seeing this I think I have the same issue. Would I expect a garage to find this issue or do you think I should tell them? Was going to start with a cable then dive deeper if the issue still happens
My 2015 Mark 2 just had a new clutch due to release bearing, it had a slightly different bearing, I think your clutch had already been replaced under warranty,
@@davesterl the oem bearing has a much thinner surface area that presses on the fingers, and it wears a thin deep line into them, thus you already have the uprated bearing, hmm

Sometimes you no the instructions can't be right and do things the way you have always done. Definitely apply grease . 😁🤞
