    As a commercial grouper hook and line and spearfisherman, this was awesome to watch. Nice fish! This looks a lot more relaxing than grouper fishing. My only thought about doing it differently was I’d hate to have the gaffs y’all have. I’d want a gaff that was about 4 to 5 feet long with a three inch double bevel hook from sea striker or aftco. They are a lot easier to manipulate than what you have there and would make landing the fish a whole lot easier and a more sure thing. We gaff almost every fish we catch. Great video.

    Such a great success of over 95 years of conservation and careful, sustainable harvest has produced such lunkers in Winnebago and some other lakes like Poygan. I once accidentally caught a sturgeon on Poygan and brought it to the boat (after quite the fight) so we could control it for hook removal. Thing was as long as our boat. It felt like wet sandpaper and its head was hard as wood. They are amazing creatures. Did you know that you can volunteer to help watch the sturgeon during the spawning run? Protection against poachers and getting to see the fish up close and personal in places like the Wolf River!

    Your Sturgeon spearing season is like our Spoonbill snagging season here in Missouri. Spoonbill get huge just like Sturgeon and from what I hear they are quite good to eat. It's hard to believe that 100* pound fish are swimming around in the rivers of Missouri and I'm sure glad that they are plankton feeders and not carnivores. Thanks for sharing I've never seen anything like this before.

      Devon Butler to each their own! Like Bryce said it creates a ton of revenue for the DNR and a bunch of small business’s around the area. The sturgeon population in the Winnebago system is very high and there are quotas set in place every season. The fish are delicious and it’s a very unique opportunity. Just an overall good time for everyone involved so it is something Jake and his family have done for a long time and will continue to do. Like he mentioned in the video check out the video from 2018 and it might give you a better understanding of what’s going on.

    Spearing a Sturgeon is about like shooting a giraffe which is about the same as shooting a dairy cow while its leaning on the barn. Its all about opportunity and less about challenge. The hardest part seems to be freezing parts of precious and tender anatomy.

    I herd that there was people falling in the bago in some parts. Do you eat them and can you get them mounted? How do you get all that siding or other white stuff out of the water?

    • @TheHuntingPublic
      @TheHuntingPublic  5 років тому

      Yes the sturgeon are ate and can be mounted. The decoys and siding are tied to string and pulled up after season closes!

    is it like pulling an elk tag through a lottery system? it seems really cool, beats ice fishing here in PA. in the video I though it said something about a quota, is there only a certain number of tags handed out for this like the PA elk lottery system? very interested seems like a great time

    • @TheHuntingPublic
      @TheHuntingPublic  5 років тому

      Everyone that applies for a tag gets one. But you need to apply by Halloween!

    Do you have to be a resident to actually spear one and also do you have to be drawn or can anyone do this? Been looking forwards to this years video.

    • @TheHuntingPublic
      @TheHuntingPublic  5 років тому

      Tags for winnebago you do not need to be drawn. You just must apply for the tag before halloween!
