      I was gonna say the exact thing.... you have to set the hook. Also let them eat long after they pop your flag!

    I'm 61 years old and I went out camping and fishing on the lake in the Kananaskis country on Spray Lake. Alone.
    90 km gusts of wind and -35 F
    Ice fishing. Had all the right gear, and 4 fat candles.
    The ice Crystal's on top of my Eskimo tent were awesome. I walked out, set up the tent. Drilled a hole for my beer and one for my emptys. A third hole for the lake trout.
    I kept warm and had an amazing experience. Wish I was younger though.

    Awesome video Jay, thank you for sharing!
    Just going to mention this, having the carbon monoxide detector lower in the shack will drastically increase its usefulness. If you have it above yourself, by the time the CO detector is going off, its too late.

    • @alexanderkavanaugh881
      @alexanderkavanaugh881 4 роки тому +1

      Exactly because carbon monoxide is heavier than air, so by the time it reaches the detector its already passed your head

      just scrolled through to see if anyone else posted this.... the alarm should be below the level of the cot

    • @RedRiverWilds
      @RedRiverWilds 4 роки тому +2

      Ideally you should have two in your shack one lower and on higher, plus gives a back up should one fail.

    • @oldmanSturzl
      @oldmanSturzl 3 роки тому +4

      Not sure where this "CO is heavier than air" comes from. Maybe you've mistaken it with propane? Either way not a big deal. While it's technically lighter, it mixes with warm air and rises but can be at any height. Proximity to the source (i.e. heater) is a bigger factor. Bottom line is that you're much safer just having one. In such a small space it will alert you to danger before it's too late, you will have plenty of warning to get to fesh air.

    Another great tip is bring a broom, once ur done all set up just deep the ice/snow off the Matt and don’t worry about them being wet! And a small hand towel after landing a fish to get the water off the Matt’s and best of all, baby wipes, so u don’t get slime all over everything and so ur hands don’t smell that bad after a while! Great video, I love your videos and my brother and I went out overnight in a old pop up shack with a wooden floor and it was so fun! I hope to do it again soon!!!

    heat- propane works well, some people use 20 pound some use 30 pound tanks
    Wood fuel fireplace... if you want to pack in that much wood, they work...
    Diesel heater... if you have a power source, diesel heaters are a little noisier but are a great controllable heat option, most will require a 12v source, but most solar batteries can do that.

  • @nathanriggins5271
    @nathanriggins5271 4 роки тому

    Also something to keep in mind is to put a foam pad or sleep roll down on your cot. It is one more thing to insulate you from the cold air. One other thing is the fan, there is a thing called a thermoelectric fan. I have one that I dremmeled a piece out of the base so it hooks on my mr. budy grate. It heats up in about a minute and really helps move the air in the shack.

    Ice fishing, spending the night... is getting more common because of a mix of heating advances (better heater), and better tent options.
    though now we are seeing the glamping versions, with people having RV style ice shacks, thanks to things like solar... where the shack becomes a home for several days... you have heat, stoves, fridges, etc.

    Ah Jay for future consideration. CO and CO2 are both heavier than air. I would keep the CO Detector low as in your cot level. A small fan like you mentioned would be excellent as well to not only circulating the heat but it would also mix the CO and CO2 mixed in the air as well. Also Propane is heavier than air as well. Good to know if you are not running the heater and it might have a tiny leak. If you keep your tank shut off when not in use then of course you need not worry about it. Just trying to be helpful.
