Old Indian-Guyanese woman talks about Indentured Servitude under British Empire

- In 1833, the Parliament of UK abolished slavery throughout most of the British Empire. However, plantation owners had already figured out a new way of exploitation.
As soon as slavery ended, the British introduced a system of indentured servitude. Under this system, upto 3.5 million* Indians, most of them illiterate peasants, were transported to British colonies in Africa, Guyana, Fiji, etc. over the next 90 years
These indentured laborers, derogatorily labelled ‘Coolies’, worked on the plantations, replacing the freed slaves. Their conditions were no different than slavery. These are the words of the very last surviving witness of this system in Guyana. She talks in a pidgin of English and something else.

Wait what ? I work in a hair salon and as dealing with all textures of hair even afro we CONSTANTLY talk about what the british did and how we still feel the reverberations a century later. Wether it be softer hair, religion to civilizations that had their own, to languages we speak, I'm happy that I can say I continue to learn about history through the generations of today.

I am a descendant from the same roots but from Fiji islands. Exactly same or even worse things happened to us in Fiji also. Our people suffed a lot during those tough times. I urge to all new generation out there to wake up and respect our people .

But an indentured servant has the right to go back that's all contractual once your contract is done you can go back I know because in the 1800s my great grand father had this in south Africa and whites had that situation too just saying not trying to take from the suffering this lady went through.

South Africa was on trade route from Europe to India so it was easy to come back. This wasn't same for Americas. British and Dutch changed hands here and Indians remained slaves.

And Fiji is part of the Asian Pacific alliance which includes India. Many Fiji Indians speak native Fijian and Hindi.

Hinduism has survived in the Caribbean and has thrived. Many a Indians are not aware of this history but because of the internet today, many are now becoming aware. It's funny how cricket has been the spark that ignited this enquiry.

I am not Indian, but I know many Hindus and Muslim practicing their religion and culture in Trinidad. My mother who was born in 1913, made me aware of the various cultural groups in Trinidad and she remembers Dewali and Eid been celebrated in Trinidad when she was a child and this has always continued.
Mosque and Hindu temples and their schools were around during my mother's lifetime and I grew up hearing the Hindu language and music around me. For someone who is not Indian, it tells you how strong this culture has been allowed to florish in Trinidad.
Indian heritage & culture is very much alive and practiced in Trinidad. Some indian food have become traditional to Trinidad and are amongst the most popular in the country and amongst all the races.
Indian music is enjoyed throughout the land and amongst all the racial groups that have settled in Trinidad . The Indian population have retained more of their culture than any other group. This is probably because, poor Indians never ceased migrating to Trinidad. The Indian population in Trinidad (Hindu &Muslum) is about 50%.

According to family records the first people to arrive in Caribbeans were in 1830 from india. Their last name were yadao ji and persaud. Do you have any idea which part of india they originate? After almost 200 years we speak dutch and lost ancestral language
@@mverick5444 I think "Yadao" and "persaud" is mispronounced form of the surnames "Yadav" and "Parsad".
Yadavs are the peasant-pastoral communities found all over India, they are more common in the "Hindi belt" (UP, Bihar, MP etc.) and even in some places of Maharashtra. Whereas the surname "Parsad" is mostly found in the northern part of India.
The frequency of the "Parsad" surname was higher than the national average in the following states:
1. Bihar (1: 71)
2. Uttarakhand (1: 103)
3. Sikkim (1: 147)
4. Uttar Pradesh (1: 162)
5. Delhi (1: 196)
Before 1840s, a large number of indentured labourers, aboriginal people from the plains of the Ganges (UP and Bihar) were hired by the Colonial government to work in the Caribbeans.
So most likely their origin is from Bihar or Uttar Pradesh. Slightly more likely from Bihar...

Watch full documentary on indenture servitude. So heartbreaking. If you want more information read the book "Coolie woman...." by Guitra Bahadur. I had tears many times reading the book and thinking about the conditions that they were going through. So many died during voyages, so many died there because of diseases, so many children died because of malnutrition etc. They went through so much pain (along with Africans) to build the economy of Britain and the new colonies.
Rare to find stories like this, but I'm *really* glad I heard her story. I'm glad you're not forgotten now, even though your children were taken from you.

The first set of Indians to arrive in Guyana were indeed from the Madras Presidency (Tamil Nadu, southern Andhra Pradesh, south Kerala and a small part of Karnataka), but primarily, the people were mainly Tamils and some Telugus. When the British realized that the Madrasi folk were not easily controllable and were hot-blooded, the next batch of Indians came from Uttar Pradesh & Bihar via the Calcutta port (Bengalis too).

This woman reminds me so much of my grandmother. My mother who was 80 when she passed 10 years ago used to tell me about all the stories her mother (my grandmother) told her when she was brought to Trinidad as and indentured worker. So sad to think about it. It made them so strong and they never broke.
Never call yourself a coolie. It is a very derogatory name use around the world on Indians to degrade them. I correct anyone that calls me that as an Indian person. Jamaicans use it loosely because they don't know where the term came from. They just know that in Jamaica if you are Indian you are a coolie. So I correct them all the time about it. The whites in South Africa brought back the term when the Indians were supporting Mandela during the his civil rights movements before throwing him in Jail for fighting for basic rights. The white people in America called the Chinese coolies back in the day when they were here building the railroad across the Nation for them. They were treated in the same manner as the Indian Indentured workers back in the day. The Indians were not limited to Guyana, there were also a larger number of them in Trinidad and other islands as well.
coolie means indentured, people should be proud that their ancestors survived so that they are here today, many people do not interpret coolie as negative but as look how far we have come.

My ancestors were indentured labourers in Trinidad. But generations later many of my relatives are doing well. Some are very wealthy

MY Grandma was mostly Indian part white in Grenada. Her maiden name was an Indian name. She cooked Indian food such as Dahl, dahl poori, Roti, Channa, currys as well as national Grenadian dishes. Kali panni was evil. But I would not be here if my Indian, African and Caucasian ancestors didn't cross that same Kali Panni

It's true the British took advantage of the East Indians from India but if I hear you correctly, I guess you are black, you have to blame Islam for the slave trade, the started it and the Europeans were opportunists in the slave trade. The last indenture ship arrived in Trinidad in early 1917. In Jan. 1920 remaining contracts were cancelled. Presume same in what was then 'British Guiana'.

One thing that did work in favour of Indian coolies were most retained their culture and religion... The evangelists were not able to succeed initially, though they could later thanks to demonising indian religions and customs with the help of converts. Irony is in places like Fiji where there is friction with natives and descendents of coolies, the indian converts take side of fijians or other natives coz they are Christians 🙄. Unlike african and east asian religions, abhrahmic religions means to wipe out your past

It’s very heartbreaking to hear the sadness in her story. My grate grandparents also came to Guyana as an Indentured Servant, under the British. I was told many stories from my grandmother (nanny). She never held any grudges against the British.

Most of the early indentured people came from the Bhojpur UP and Bihar. Later ones came from Tamil Nadu (Madras). She seems to be of Tamil ancestry. My aajah and aajee were from UP and my great Nanee also came as a child from UP . My Nana was from Bengal.

The whole world should bring these terrible bosses to class law suit action and make them pay huge sums of money to the surviving grandchildren of the poor peasants who were taken as slaves. The world should not keep quiet.

Indentured Servitude was not invented in the British Colonies after 1833 - It had in fact been used extensively in the 1600s both in North America and the Caribbean. By way of example between 1625-49 30,000 Indentured servants were sent to the Caribbean most, if not all, being from the British Isles. One visitor to Barbados in 1632 said that most of the Indentured Servants were kept more like slaves than servants. See Mathew Parker's excellent book The Sugar Barons for an interesting introduction to the Sugar Trade, the early days of Caribbean Colonisation and the development of Slavery under the 'British Flag'.

Our ancestors - foremothers and forefathers that lanede in Guyana suffered a lot. I remembered my deceased mother talked about the extreme struggle her parents went through Beaten, raped etc. The queen is in a nice warm place - Hell.
