  • In this Ken Loomer Jazz Quartet concert, I`m using my 1970 Slingerland BR drum set which is over 50 years old. The sound out of these Slingerland drums is just amazing. I`m playing a 14x22 inch bass drum,9x13 tom, 16x16 floor tom, and the great artist model 5.5x14 inch snare drum. Slingerland made great drum shells which was a 3ply maple, poplar, maple with solid maple rings on them. It has the round bearing edge with more contact on the head to give it that full open clear tone out of the drums. I`m using no mic`s, so you are hearing the real sound from these 50 plus year old drums. So many of the great drummers at one time played Slingerland drums like Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Neal Peart, Louie Bellson, Danny Seraphine, Roy Haynes, Rufus Jones and so many others. When I get to do my drum solo, I want it to be interesting and dynamic for the people who come to my concert. I have work on for decades for my drum technique to be smooth so that my idea`s on what to play can be done in a relaxed way. My own technique on how to do the finger control, which is no movement of my arms, wrist, and fingers, but a control bounce of the sticks off the head works good for me. My control of just the bass drum using my technique of the single pedal to play fast double stroke roll sound so good with this open sounding bass drum. Like I always, I give it 110% when doing these live performance with my Jazz Quartet. The people will let me know in real time how my performance was. I`m also the leader of my Ken Loomer Big Band. The great Slingerland sound came from the 3 ply maple, poplar, maple with solid maple re-enforcing rings. With the big open clear tone of these drums, it projects so well in any room. Plus I`m not using any mic`s on the drums, so you hear the real tone of the drums.

In this one your movements remind me more of Gene Krupa. I love the snare turned off. The intermittent rim shots, the cymbal grab with the stick on the up stroke. The amazing sounding Tom’s! The hi hat work, hi hat work with rim shots, the cymbal work! Woo hoo!!! Like fire works! The kick drum into the snare on! The snare work! (Is that the snare you had done a refinish on?) the rim shots onto stick on stick into snare roll. The quietest roll to the loudest! Snare and kick!!! Big booming cymbal stop into caravan ending!!! Phenomenal1!! I could watch it all day long.
Thank you so much for taking the time for posting these so that we could all see you what real jazz drumming is all about . I like your band so much. But mostly I watch it for your drum solos.
    Thanks, Ken

You really pay attention to how I put together this drum solo. Glad you notice all the little things that I`m playing. Of course lots of dynamic`s which is a big part of my solo. In this concert I`m using my 5.5 x 14 inch Slingerland Artist model snare drum. I want my solo to be interesting and dynamic for the people who come out to my concert. They will let me know in real time how my performance was. Thanks so much for your comment and enjoying this video.

The way Slingerland made their shells with the 3 ply maple, poplar, maple and solid maple re-enforcing rings and a coat of clear lacquer is why the drums sound so great. I able to to tune them up for that big full open tone that fits my playing so well. Thanks for your comment.

Excellent. Great old school tone...reminds me of Krupa's tone! 😮

You are so correct about the tone of these drums is like what Gene Krupa had. He played Slingerland drums his entire career with that big full open clear tone. Thanks Peter for your comment.

Hi Ken. An amazing drum solo. I really enjoy your videos so please keep them coming! Your drums sound great! You are so very talented and I'm glad you're still playing. You're an inspiration to all drummers! You are the essence of Buddy Rich. Keep on playing. I still plan on making a video to show you that trick drums made a special snare drum for Buddy's 100th birthday. It was signed by Kathy rich and I was lucky enough to get number 34. I hope that I will be able to get this video of the drums made so you can see what I'm talking about. Trick drums did a great job in making this snare drum. It has a fantastic sound very similar to your slingerland snare drum. Thanks for sharing your videos!

What I learned the most from Buddy is to always give 100% in your performance to the people. Plus it`s always about the music first and how to make it sound better with the type of drumming you do to support your fellow musicians. When it`s my turn to do a solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come out to my concert. They will let you know in real time how your performance is. I know Buddy said the best sounding snare drum he ever played was the Slingerland Radio King 5.5x14 solid maple shell model. He used that snare for the last 5 years of his career, What size and shell is the Trick model snare they made. Thanks so much Robert for your comment.

Them drums will last another 50 years with TLC!
    Built like tanks!
Sadly today we live in a disposable society if it breaks down or breaks, just get another one, my parents remember when you bought something you bought it to last!

@@jasonpp1973 I have a lot of classic drums that I will for sure want them to be played, and not just to look at. But it must be taken care off for sure. So I made plans for not only my drums, but so many of my other stuff to go to the right people. Like the old saying, "Can`t Take It With You" when your time is up.
