    What I’ve discovered is that many actors, athletes, musicians, and others at the top of their career aren’t that different from you and me. They have the same insecurities and flaws that we all deal with every day. In a dark, yet enlightening way...I find a lot of comfort in that. I invite you all to join me while I get inside each of these fascinating people.

      @@MrRmmk1it was pretty much completely detached from the reality of drumming/jazz culture as a whole (not to say it isn’t a fantastic film, which it totally is! the way i see it, it’s a sports film with the aesthetic of music)
      first, the practicing scenes - if you’re really trying to become fluent as a drummer, priority number one is relaxed technique and playing slow while speeding up bit by bit at a rate that doesn’t cause you to tense up. if your hands are regularly bleeding, you’re gonna get tendinitis/carpel tunnel and lose your ability to play - again, relaxed technique is the key!
      with the whole tempo thing, playing super fast swing is difficult yes, just not the defining feature of what makes someone a “good” drummer - there’s vocabulary, the ability to hear and interact, groove, decision making, awareness of form, knowing your standards (basically like, songs that’re widely known to jazz musicians), tons of things! no one’s gonna test your drumming ability by saying “here, play super fast swing!”
      and then there’s the depiction of jazz culture - i’m not gonna say hardasses don’t exist, in general tho it’s more “let’s hang out and make some music” and less “i’m gonna throw a chair at you if you aren’t matching my tempo” haha - it’s a beautiful community based on listening and growing together through a deep respect for the giants of the past/present! if you’re a real cat, you’re gonna uplift those around you and get on the stage with gratitude and reverence
      jazz is (imo) all about freedom, expression, community, and protesting powers of oppression through those things 🤗

      @@MrRmmk1in terms of the drumming itself tho it was legit! miles teller is an actual drummer and played the parts he was on-screen for :D if i’m not mistaken they had another guy play for some bits where miles wasn’t directly on screen (don’t quote me on that), still tho from a technical standpoint the drumming was totally real! pretty badass imo to have the actor actually shred on screen~

      Its a tight script that hits all the right notes and leaves the viewers with a kind of energy that I've never seen with another hollywood movie.
      Also hilarious that the director thought that making it obvious in the original script that andrew was on a dark path towards the end of the film, leaving his father, etc etc would be too on the nose and spoon feeding so he made the final act of the movie much more subtle and delicate in its intentions.
      And we end up with a split audience, good for discussions mind you, that thinks the movie is a happy ever after ending, failing to understand that depiction does not imply endorsement.

    • @SuqMadiq
      @SuqMadiq 5 місяців тому +22

      I guess I'm gonna be "that guy", but I don't really see the "inspirational story".
      Andrew loses basically everything good in his life (never gets it back) and Fletcher is an abusive shitstain.
      If anything, it's closer to the story of an addict and what they went through to get high.

    • @masterzombie161
      @masterzombie161 5 місяців тому +3

      @@SuqMadiq well it’s up for interpretation in anyway you look at it. Reason why I say “inspirational” is that yes Andrew does lose a lot in this, he didn’t have that much to begin with. His father settled for less and his own mother abandoned him. He felt he had nothing going in his life so he dedicated himself to music.
      Yes Fletcher is way too strict and at times evil, but he has a very good point about music being what it is today. While there are some good music still, it isn’t how it used to be. There’s no real passion, just doing a good job, settling for less.
      Andrew had to let go to become great and he did on his own terms against Fletcher.
      Now onto the horror movie spectrum you can say Fletcher planned this entire thing and he lies and manipulated people to get what he wants and now that Andrew is his puppet he’s free to use him till he finds his next victim.

    • @SuqMadiq
      @SuqMadiq 5 місяців тому +9

      @@masterzombie161 I mean, interpretations certainly differ. I just don't think all of them are very good.
      I just straight up disagree with both you and the character of Fletcher when you say passion doesn't exist in music anymore. Tons of passionate music exists today.
      When we look back at history, we mostly remember the good stuff. You're currently living through history; What's happening now hasn't been hit with the "anti-slop" filter that yesterday's happenings have been.
      There was absolutely slop back then. It just got lost because slop doesn't age well.
      Not to mention, making music is a lot more accessible now. You see significantly more people give their go, so things can seem relatively oversaturated.
      The only time Fletcher was right in that movie was when he had his butt handed to him and respected it.

    wow a first comment that never happens to me on a short, i've been a fan of this guy since he was on Law & Order playing a shrink & that's the first place i ever saw him on anything. he did to Spider-man (2002) while he was still doing Law & Order but that show is what i first saw him in anything.
    Much like Urban Legend (1998) was the first thing i ever saw Michael in anything and it's still one of my favorite films of all time. that's how far back i got it was one of my 1st dvd's if i recall i ever bought and i bought my 1st player in November of (1998) for $300 bucks.

    There’s a video here on UA-cam, from a drum channel, where they ask a young prodigy drummer to watch some scenes from Whiplash and separate fact from fiction. He said a few things were a bit over the top but for the most part it was fairly accurate at showing how competitive and crazy being a musician at that level can get.
