Some of you asked about the triggers on the drums and what they use them for. Here is what Rossi himself said about them: "We use the triggers to open the gates, and for special electronic sounds in a few songs like "Puppe", and for explosions or gunshots."
What is meant by open the gates? I would normally take it to mean "open up pathways to new sounds and effects" (for eg to make pyrotechnics and lights blow on cue with the songs) but he was very specific, "gates AND special sounds AND explosions in a few songs." Open the transistor gates maybe?
@@A-Milkdromeda-Laniakea-Hominidnoise gates and compressors do opposite(ish) things. noise gates suppress signal below a threshold while compressors amplify signal below a threshold. you also have limiters that suppress anything above a certain level
they do the grooves and fills to make sure everything is coming out clearly. most of them start off with the "hit snare 1 then snare 2" thing then rip a decent little drum solo to see how it all sounds together. there's good reasons for that, and there's no right or wrong way to sound check an instrument aside from obvious things
@@hanledeezbars I agree with you to a point. The problem is that few people post the boring part of sound check so people go into a sound check and just start going nuts. Most sound guys want to dial in each mic before hearing the kit all together
But it has to have the groove because of the sum of harmonics, so there's nothing left! Until you play everything together! But the passage of each piece is important!

But the real fun is when when you are the drummer in Rammstein playing music you helped create to a packed arena....
This guy was also checking the drums right before the boys came on stage at the concert I was at. He was just hitting the snare twice and obviously: crowd went wild. At first he didn't react, stayed all professional but once he got up he actually threw kisses into the crowd xD Reminded me of Jack Black.
@@JAMBI..The third one on the left is technically not a floor tom, i'ts a tilted floor bassdrum. He probably use it to some dubble bass drum -ish sound. Cool as F.
I remember when he did the sound check with the bass pedal in Chicago about an hour or 2 before the show started. It was like getting a taste of what was to come. That bass pedal shook the whole stadium.

I'm all about my triggers. Took a while to get Roland's all around the kit, but I love em! And no, they aren't cheating! When used as intended you blend the natural sound of your kit with the perfect samples of your VST
Of course they're not cheating. They will NOT make you sound like a better drummer! Autotune is cheating, prerecorded tracks is cheating - effects are enhancments to the musician's already present skill.

Even during the pandemic their 2022 stadium tour earned $125 MILLION. Yet people caught on phones: cymbal crashes before Tommy Lee had sat down... Nikki Sixx fist pounding the air with his pick hand during songs... and Neil still sounding like garbage even though he wasn't singing lol. There's a lot of cheating going on these days. People were coughing up $2500 for the best seats to watch 60yo men doing air guitar and lip sync - pathetic.
@@pandanarkystudios5198really depends. some guys in more extreme styles can't pull off decent dynamics at high tempos and use triggers to act like they can. Not saying that's you I've used triggers for the sound a lot as well
This reminds me of the weirdest sound exp I had.... was around 1997.... no in-ear only monitors. Was a hall for about 1000 souls.... with echo like hell. We finished sound check and I had to live with my voice coming back to me from the wall ahead... Ok - ignore mode on. but then the crowd came in. ... Wtf... the echo was one thing but my voice was reflected by the heads of people very scaring.... it was like 1000 peope hanging directly at my ears and whispering to me. Wow goose bumps. Hard to explain, but it was so loud to me. Never ever had this again. Even at same location, as they modified the walls later. Cheers
Smooth tuning on the low toms with the Diplomat or Ambassador heads. Take note how he only tuned in quarter turns and also had acute listening to hear that subtle difference without changing his listening position.

And that's how an ACTUAL drum sound check goes. No crazy grooves and fills. "can you hit tom 1 for me?"

The engineer asks you to play the whole kit after you're done with testing each individual drum.
