  • Thanks to a tip from my buddy I was at the Canal one October evening afterwork fishing the East tide. Bluefish were around and after losing a soft plastic to a bluefish I opted try a Rocket. Many anglers have had a lot of success with Rockets, I am not one... In fact before this evening I'd never caught a fish on a Rocket...I can't say that anymore, check out how it happened...

    Bought one last year after I saw some guys catching on them. Didn’t have a chance to try it.Loaded a Cordell and caught a fish on it.

      Awesome! Cordell’s have been a staple for quite a while - nice work. I’m sure the rocket will produce for you as well! 🎣

    Awesome video Matt. The Rocket is a very versatile lure. You can use it on top water, like a pencil popper. And you can also let it sink to the bottom and jig with it. Just like you would with a bucktail or jig. Great plug to have for the Canal. Casts like a rocket. Hints the name. lol

      Great info Jeff - you’re absolutely correct. I’ve carried that one for a few seasons and never had luck with it. On this particular night I’d lost a plastic tail jig to a bluefish on the prior cast so I figured I’d give them something they couldn’t destroy. I didn’t expect that a nice over-slot striper would be the result but then it happened. 🎣🐟

    Been devouring your content in an effort to familiarize myself with the fishery. Any tips/suggestions for the CCC/Buzzards Bay Area for mid May? Super excited about an upcoming trip

      Thanks Mike - just trying to share my experiences, I’m the furthest thing from a pro but if other can benefits from my trials and errors then that’s a plus! For mid-May, I’d recommend a white pencil, something you can cast far and work slow while it floats and then some jigs, white or green mac - highly recommend East End Lure Co jigs. Let me know when you’re coming, I’d be happy to share a tide with ya. 🎣🐟

      @@nightshiftfishing right on I’ll get some pencils painted up. I paint lures and I’d love to gift ya one if we end up sharing a tide. Check my stuff out at Champlain Provisions on all the socials. I’ll check out East End Lure Co

    Hey man you inspired me to try Canal fishing last year and got a few (mostly beach fisherman), looking to pick up a new setup for the canal, finally have a decent budget. do you have recommendations for a rod/reel combo for throwing lures and jigs? (prefer experienced advice that reviews :P )

    • @nightshiftfishing

      Hey! Thank you for sharing this, if I helped you get into Canal fishing that’s awesome. I really enjoy fishing there and I hope you’ve enjoyed it too. In regards to gear, let me first say that I take the approach of not spending a lot on the rods/reels in general. My feeling is that fishing the Canal, things get beat up fast so to me it isn’t worth having the real high end stuff just to wreck it. That said you need to have gear that will stand up to the rocks and big fish! For rods I use and recommend the ODM Jigster, 11’, 4-10oz. For me this is my go-to, it’s not cheap coming in around $520 now (I believe). I’ve had two and they are ideal for me. I can toss anything from a light SP minnow to a 6oz jig without issue and when I only bring one rod it’s that one. My first Jigster lasted 3 seasons and it took 3 seal steals in 2 days to finally start busting it. Even with it broken I landed a 43” striper before heading to Red Top to get a replacement. For reels, I use a Shimano Saragosa, these aren’t cheap but they aren’t overly expensive either. The reel has handled all of the fish I’ve hooked up with over the past 3 years and after 3 seasons and regular care and maintenance it still runs like a champ. For a slightly less expensive option you could try a Penn Slammer III (6500), I use that reel on my plugging rod and like all Penns, it’s a champ. Plenty of folks use other types of rods and reels, these are just my experiences, it’s often about what feels best for you. I recommend trying out a few reels to see how they feel before you commit to one. 🎣

    Do you jig rockets the same way you do a paddle tail

    • @nightshiftfishing
      @nightshiftfishing  5 місяців тому

      I was working this just like a paddle tail jig. Cast up current, wait 8-12 seconds and then popped like a jig and retrieved. 🎣

    floating rocket?

    • @blackhills7626
      @blackhills7626 5 місяців тому

      No, they come in weights 3.5 , 4.8, and 5.8 oz

    • @nightshiftfishing
      @nightshiftfishing  5 місяців тому

      This one is 4.8oz so it’s a sinker but with the right retrieve you can work it through the water column to the top and work it as if it was a pencil across the top. 🎣🐟
