Track was resurfaced in 2018, but it's safe to say that even without the new tarmac W11 could've easily taken T9 flat.
Mercedes didnt choose their party mode (strat 2) for 2020 Q3. Both drivers were told to use strat 3, although the ERS deployment through that part would've been highly likely the same.

I'm finding I've got a new appreciation of the 2014/2015 cars. They just have this rawness that is unique in the modern era.
They remind me of contemporary hypercars where the power of them far outweighs the cornering potential. The way they sort of clumsily hussle through the corners and then just unleash this monstrous amount of straight line speed is great to watch.

Well I do appreciate the 2016 Mercedes-powered cars a lot, which were likely the fastest F1 cars ever in 0-250km/h acceleration. They were still slow in corners, but on the straight they were ridiculously fast. F1's top speed record stll belongs to 2016 Williams.

    • @mandolo100
      @mandolo100 2 роки тому +31

the reason for that is the higher cornering speed too. Theyre similarly fast on the straights because the 2014/15 cars just have so much raw accelerating power while the 2020 cars get a "head start" through the higher cornering speed out of T9, and then they can go faster through T10 as well, meaning that while they arrive at the braking zone at similar speeds, the 2020 car doesn't have to slow down as much and therefore has to brake less and therefore can start braking later.

Mayby without the engine freeze we would already see faster times by the end of 2025 on some tracks.. but mayby we still will(although its unlikely). Difference is only 3-4sec on some tracks(to 2020). And the new 2022 cars are absolute babies right now keep that in mind. Sadly I don’t think there will ever be an f1 car faster than it. With the new regulations coming up for the engines they have two or 300 (I forget how much exactly) less horse power. That coupled with the immense amount of downforce they lost with the new generation of cars is going to make for some very slow, very boring cars. It’s honestly sad to see them going in the opposite direction. The 2020 cars would’ve been an absolute spectacle to see going around the track in person. But I don’t think we will ever have the chance to see them or any future f1 cars pull those gs around corners like those :(

It is evident that the 2020 F1s have been the fastest in history for their combination of downforce (the highest in history) and power (not the highest, but close to 1000 hp is still a lot), but I don't I had stopped to think that the 2014-15 cars were the slowest in years.
It makes sense, since its power was not too much (about 600 hp from the ICE and 160 from the ERS, for a total of some "modest" 760 hp) and its downforce was low (I don't know if more than previous years, but low anyways).
Fortunately, the 2017 regulations made us have the fastest single-seaters in history, too bad that both the inequality between teams and the aerodynamic concept deprived us of one of the most incredible times in history...

I don’t know how bad gear ratios and ECU setup were optimized for this track let alone this corner, but you can see him reach 268 km/h and have full throttle entering the corner. His speed doesn’t decline even with lateral acceleration meaning his longitudinal (straight line) acceleration is technically increasing. He only barely reached 268 entering the corner and he kept full throttle meaning the car could handle a faster speed if it accelerated in time and continued to do full throttle like he did.
Thinking about stuff like this gets more and more fun when you understand the math and engineering around everything

@@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines Well it’s not really true that you’ll never know you can probably do speculations on the downforce of the W11 when looking at different velocities it has for corners with different radii R,
When youre speculating you may look at different corners and watch the throttle input compared to the velocity and when you see its performance when pulling certain G’s you can probably safely assume it could do that for this corner with similar or same G forces as well and based on that and maybe calculations that do an Engine swap with that year’s Ferrari (which I see being compared to the W11 having crazy straight line speed aswell) you can see the effect on lap time when circuits are run on W11’s aero and Ferrari’s engine, giving you the best car you could have had that year with teams working together.
You can simulate that endlessly though because you have the data for it but it’s not really that realistic because of the endless parameters that racing has.

I appreciate the cornering speed of modern F1 cars but I still have such an appreciation for how much raw power the first hybrids had. Obviously the cars had less drag but they could get to 320kph without breaking a sweat on most tracks and could get over 350 at times (Baku was 376 I think?)
The raw power overpowered the late 2000s aero on those cars yeah, but it’s still fascinating

I’m currently saving to order a fanatec wheel and then I’m gonna try out for some actual championships online. Atm, I’m just practicing on a T300RS with a stock wheel and no clutch. you just cannot compare these 2 qualy rounds. in 2015 you werent allowed to use softs in spain. you only had mediums and hards. also you didnt have the newly resurfaced corner we now have. so you basically have so much less grip that its just not comparable. give the car from 2015 softs and let it run on the track right now and the gap would be much much more narrow. obviously the 2020 car will still be quicker but then its a matter of 10kmh and not 70

2014/15 cars certainly were slow over a lap, but the acceleration and top speed is some of the best we've seen. 68kph difference in apex speed, only 7kph difference at end of straight 2015. 2014 end of straight difference is only 3 or 4. Both in favour of 2020, but when the car has that much more grip it's not surprising. It shows how higher downforce can lead to reduced time on straights with much higher corner exit speed. Very extreme example of that, but it proves the point.
