Definitely getting this rifle. Checks all the boxes for me. S&W, Stainless, Handy Length, side gate loading, mag tube removal, m-lock slots, ghost ring sights, 44 magnum. Perfect.
I picked up mine from my dealer this morning. It is way better than I expected. The finish is like a Marlin Trapper and the furniture is like a Henry. Great sights and a smooth action. The weight is just right. I would have preferred a 16" barrel, but it feels and functions well so I'm good with it. Can't wait to sling some lead.
My dad was a collector of 1800's firearms and shot cowboy action and mounted shooting. I grew up on a single action revolvers and lever action rifles. So glad to see there is still a love for these guns
I appreciate gun safety more and more as I get older and I see accidents and worse happen. Your attention to it is refreshing as most gun communities seem to find safety features a road block to fun. Love this video
Now this rifle is bringing out the Hound in me , S&W done a great job on this rifle. And while I'm not able to attend Shot Show I can envy Don on a visit to the new Smith & Wesson factory to check this rifle out among other new ideas. Personally I would take this trip over Shot Show. I get numerous reviews every single day from manufacturer's everywhere and can say with out a doubt this rifle comes out swinging for 2024. Well done Don 🤜🤛

I’d love this I’d like to see them if they could build the old colt lighting pump action. These two together would be a winning combination in my book. Thanks for the video awesome as always 👍
For those who care, the LOP according to S&W is between 12.-13" vs the Henry Model X's 14". I just got off the phone with both and Henry has no plans for a shorter LOP though you can order wood furniture for it for about $150 and cut it down yourself. Since the Henry Model X is their only center-fire with a factory threaded barrel and this 1854 comes with it with a shorter LOP, this appears to be a pretty good deal.
I walked by the forgings when I still worked there but I didn't talk about it not knowing if they were for them or making them for another company. Hope they come up with a 45-70 !
That's a great lever gun. S&W should sell many of these. I have to ask if the reciever is built for the bigger S&W calibers 460 & 500. The 44 mag is the safe choice for introducing this new model. Great video, good news from S&W.
On tfb video S&W pr guy said they started with midrange size/power intentionally. He was also typically laconic in making any promises for the company. Basically said id like to see a range from 38/357 to 50 bmg. Sounded like he accidentally popped out 50 and went crap i can’t even mention 500 s&w so ill just say bmg 😂🤦♂️
I would be seriously surprised. Those cartridges are long. I doubt the receiver is long enough to handle a cartridge that long. 500 Mag is almost as long as .30-30.
@craigverrilli1 What kind of problems? I've owned Marlin 39's, Marlin 22 bolt guns as well as Winchester and Remington 22 rifles with removable magazines tubes and never had one problem at all over the 44 years that I've owned them. What problems do you foresee with the use of a removable magazine tube with this new 1854 S&W? The notched locking feature looks to be more robust than the ones I currently own.
There is a Winchester lever-action 12ga shotgun in my family, handed down from my grandfather. It is the model 1907, patented in 1886, I believe with a John Browning action. This shotgun has a smooth bore and a 6 shot magazine under the barrel. I killed a deer with this shotgun in 1979, using a lead slug. Probably not a good idea, since this gun was designed with a Damascus barrel and meant for black powder loads, not modern smokeless powder shells. I was a young Marine, home on leave and didn't really know any better. My oldest brother has possession of this gun now and it will be passed to me, eventually.
Yeah, you have to watch out for that kind of stuff with the old guns. Sounds nice though. Not that you’re selling or anything but I didn’t know they had shotguns like that. Old ones or new ones.Wondering what the value would be. Any idea?
Arnold Schwarzenegger carried a sawed-off version of this shotgun in the movie, Terminator 2. Replicas are also used in competition shooting events. The gun we have is well used and not valued very high. Winchester made a version in 10ga with engraving on the receiver. It is valued higher since it is more rare. @@wbwills2
Spencer put out a 12 gaged pump with a Damascus barrel in 1900. Sears sold it through the Sears and Roebuck catalog but they sold only for one year. Black power would burst the barrel. Great for knives but no good for gun barrels. So shine it up and keep it on the wall.
Of course, they are as popular as ever. We all played Cowboys and Indians. Those of us in the country grew up watching Westerns. Lever guns are just cool. I love my Henry side load, brass receiver, 30-30 lever gun.
I heard a S&W rep call the 1854 44 mag a “throw back to our heritage”. I’m a 10mm guy since about 1990. Super excited with the S&W M&P 10… bought two. Both jammed regularly, (failure to feed), The magazine fell out the bottom while shooting in both, and on one the supplied plastic optics plate cracked, the screws sheered, and my RMR flew backwards over my head. I sent them back to S&W twice. Failure to feeds continued after receiving them back each time. Called a third time and was transferred to a girl who sounded quite young. She interrupted me, talked over me, and told me that my request that S&W exchange my pistols wasn’t going to happen since the issues were fixable. And she said that I “should shoot better quality ammo”. I guess higher quality than the Federal, Fiocci, Mag Tech, Sig, and Hornady that I had written them about failing, and that I spent a fortune on testing their guns. I filed a BBB complaint but through mediation had no confidence in S&W’s offer to “service my guns”, (for the third time). I wonder if engineering a defective product and then having an arrogant and entitled sounding young lady dismiss your victims is also a throwback to S&W’s heritage; or perhaps rather, they are turning over in their graves.

They need to make a 357/38 mag... I love 44 mag, its just dam expensive. Also, I think HENRY is the master of the lever action.... Curious to see how this one competes! Glad for this review!
When I went deer hunting for the first time in my own, my dad and I went down to the local pawn shop in Ogden Utah (The Gift House). I chose a used, but basically new, Marlin 336. It was $90 out the door. That was in 1987. Can you imagine picking up a nearly new lever gun today for $90? I shoulda never gotten rid of it! Smiths new 1850 would make a great 100 yard brush/forest gun. For years, I would keep my Marlin handy by my side in the truck while driving to my hunting spot, in case I needed to jump out quickly for a quick shot. Then carry my .270 to wherever I was going to sit. Now it’s just me and the trusty .270. Friends, don’t ever sell your lever guns. They are just beautiful works of art.
Great job , your speed & great follow up shots, make that gun look bad ass ! Dam I said l wasn't going to buy any more guns. Never was a good liar. Thanks

I have noticed the same thing, but I still find value in his detailed look and good camera work. It's the next best thing to actually picking it up in the store.
It probably would have been a smarter move for Smith to drop a 460s&w and 500s&w seems how there's a hole in the lever gun market for affordable guns in them cals I would definitely consider buying one or two
That looks nice, but i prefer the slim lines and light weight of the winchester straight grip guns...they had the trapper in 44...that was/is a fine firearm... about as close to 44 mag carbine perfection as you could get.
I just saw one of these at the local Bass Pro shop. Although I don’t need another lever action right now, I am sorely tempted to getting myself an early Christmas present.
Just got a Henry 30-30 lever gun. Looks like I might be shopping again... I also have a Henry X in 45 Colt. It's actually smoother than the Henry I just got. And it's pretty damn smooth.

It looks a lot like my Henry all-weather, but I prefer the black stained wood stock and front grip on mine, as well as the stainless lever and trigger.
The crossbolt safety is not a transfer bar safety. Crossbolt is simply acting as a hammer/firing pin block. Not transfer bar. Great video as usual. Love your videos.
Love all your videos. Excellent gun. One thing I notice though. You said good gun for states that don't allow this gun or that gun. We gotta stop saying that and call it out for what it is. States that have infringed on the 2nd amendment. Separation states. Or, unconstitutional states. We can't get back together if we dont start calling these states and counties out. Bring it to everyone's attention while we still have these platforms. I know you weren't really thinking of that when you said it. It's OK. I'm just sayin.
Shot Show was showing the standard blued steel wood version, but it is not on the website yet. Surprised they went to the trouble of the removable tube without being able to load thru it. The more the merrier in the Lever Gun market😀
BTW, you don't have to push out the lever screw once it is unscrewed, from the other side with a punch. Don't scratch your rifle, just pull it out with your fingers. Same for the ejector, no pliers required, turn the rifle to the right side, and the ejector will fall out. I would have expected better.
I noticed this too, however I find it useful when using gloves keeping the trigger up against the finger making it easier to notice when reaching the wall. Would like anyone else's thoughts on this though ...
Couple of newbie questions...The unloading procedure sure is fast but is the tube magazine supposed to eject like that? It appeared to go flying off like a rocket. Also the bullets spilling out all over the place is normal?
Seems a target test with a scope at 100 yards would have been more appropriate. Some lever actions can stack 'em and some are all over the place. Thanks for the review.
The three M-LOK slots on this rifle are short and thus you can only fit a short M-LOK 3 slot picatinny rail. I would like to fit a Magpul bipod and the version that is designed for picatinny mounting is too long for the recess moulded into the forend. I notice that on this video which shows what looks like a Magpul bipod is attached to a spacer block attached to the M-LOK slot. Any advice or assistance would be gratefully accepted.
Definitely getting this rifle. Checks all the boxes for me. S&W, Stainless, Handy Length, side gate loading, mag tube removal, m-lock slots, ghost ring sights, 44 magnum. Perfect.

I’d buy one if it came in a s&w 500 :)
Picking one up tomorrow!😃
The three M-LOK slots on this rifle are short and thus you can only fit a short M-LOK 3 slot picatinny rail. I would like to fit a Magpul bipod and the version that is designed for picatinny mounting is too long for the recess moulded into the forend. I notice that on this video which shows what looks like a Magpul bipod is attached to a spacer block attached to the M-LOK slot. Any advice or assistance would be gratefully accepted.
Would love to see this in a blued option with the composite stock for a more low profile look
