  • The Marlin Dark Series 1895 and the Smith & Wesson Model 1854 are two exemplary lever action rifles that we tested this year. Read our review of the full field of the rifles of 2024 and see how we tested them here: www.outdoorlif...
    Marlin Dark Series 1895 Specs
    • Action: Lever action
    • Stock: Synthetic butt with aluminum handguard
    • Cartridge: .45/70 Gov’t
    • Capacity: 5+1
    • Weight: 6 pounds, 13 ounces (measured)
    • Trigger: 6 pounds, 4 ounces (measured)
    • Barrel: 16.17 inches, 1:20 twist, threaded 11/16-24
    • Length: 35 1/2 inches
    • Price: $1,429
    • 5-Shot Group Average: 1.284 inches, 24 total groups (50 yards)
    • Accuracy Notes: As with the other lever-actions the data here is from 50 yards shooting from the standing position off a support bag on a tripod. We were all really impressed with how well the Barnes 300-grainers shot. In .45/70 it delivers a devastating wallop, whether you’re chasing a deer in the timber or trying to stop a grizzly charging at you from a willow thicket.
Smith & Wesson Model 1854 Specs
    • Action: Lever action
    • Stock: Synthetic
    • Cartridge: .44 Magnum
    • Capacity: 9+1
    • Weight: 6 pounds, 12 ounces (measured)
    • Trigger: 4 pounds, 7 ounces (measured)
    • Barrel: 19.25 inches; 1:20 twist; threaded 11/16-24
    • Length: 36 inches
    • Price: $1,279
    • 5-Shot Group Average: 1.80 inches, 30 total groups (50 yards)
    • Accuracy Notes: The data here is with groups shot at 50 yards. With a mean radius of .5 inches you can be confident in tackling any game within the effective range of a .44 Magnum. This rifle more than meets the standard of the lever-action platform.

Comparing 2 totally different guns. A 45-70 vs a 44mag.? Throwing a large rifle caliber usually requires a heavier, longer frame. Should have been compared the the Marlin 1894 SBL.

      @clutchcargo1239 Місяць тому

I agree. I compared the two and bought the 1894 SBL. The 1854 isn't as attractive to me. I also bought 1894 C in 44 and 357. I already had the RM 1895 SBL. To me, the Rugers are all really nice guns. The 1854 with plain polymer stocks just doesn't turn my crank, but I imagine it's an OK shooter.

@@clutchcargo1239 Agreed on the plastic stock thing🤮. Although I have a 444 marlin- I am currently hooked on Henrys, with a 44mag Steel, 44mag Brass and a 360 Buckhammer Steel.

Got a Marlin Trapper S/S .44 mag June 29th. online, found a few, most were out of stock, the one I got was out the door priced lower priced than some and about the same as other's listed prices were. Gritr Sports in Texas.
Saw the SBL version for less at a few places, a little more at others. It was easier to find as well. (it's been available longer).
Saw the 1895 45-70 Trapper at the same place I got mine last year, grabagun, for 500 bucks less! In stock. (less than I paid for the 1894 .44 mag too!) The SBL in stock as well, both are available at a lot of places.

But the manual says not to use +P or +P+. That's a non starter if I'm using for deer. Also it as issues cycling 44spl if you want to use inside as a home defense rifle. Why they made the action so weak as to not handle +P has me scratching my head. Big fail.

S&w got a tall order to throw henery and marlin off the top 2 spots in the lever action relm. Very tall order. Personally id buy the Marlin dark 336 30/30 or 1895 45/70 and not look bak.

I’ve had two Marlins. Both were fine guns, but I never did get consistent accuracy from either when shooting cast bullets. My Winchester had no problems. At the time I was told to blame the “micro-groove” rifling. I don’t know if it was true or not. Sold both.
Fast forward a few decades. My .44 Winchester broke. I haven’t yet found a replacement part. So I bought a Henry. I’d have considered a Marlin since it’s now being made by Ruger, and apparently made without the “micro-groove” rifling, but it wasn’t available in .44.
So far, the Henry works fine. It handles 300-grain bullets-my Winchester never did-and it as been stone reliable.
Marlin? It’s at least 30% more $$, so I won’t be trading in my Henry.

I handled both the new Ruger Marlins 1894, 1895, and the S&W 1854. I like the Marlins over the S&W. I like the quality finish, smooth feel, and the looks of the Marlins better. If you really want a Marlin, they aren't that hard to find. In my experience, they are also relatively comparable in price. Choosing between the two manufacturers was easy for me. The all weather 44 1854, or the 44 1894 SBL. I held the 1854 first, the 1894 second. I bought the 1894 for $100 more... Worth it!. Love the gray laminate stocks/SS combination. Classy all weather look. Super smooth action and a decent all-around trigger... Thanks, Ruger.

I bought both guns and the marlin is the better gun hands down. I didn't even get to shoot my s&w and it already had issues so i sent it back to them and it was returned with the same issues, the gun had rust on it and was filthy from when they shot it plus the burr marks on the tube end. My marlin on the other hand has been nothing but great and they will continue to get my business

Better than all the rest, frankly. Japan knows how to craft firearms. People confuse features with quality, if they don't like a top eject they will say it's inferior when that's got nothing to do with design, form, fit, and function.
No idea why the host of this video gushed all over this S&W. Other reviews haven't been as over the top. S&W seemed to have rushed it to the game and there's final assembly issues leading to loose screws and other things that lack attention to detail. The usual S&W stuff that's been going on for YEARS now, which Ruger (producing new Marlins) would not accept. And let's not mention S&W customer service problems.

Because not every person has the same tastes etc. Some prefer one way or the other, some like both. Differences in taste are one of the things that makes people individuals. Thankfully, we don't all like the exact same things.
I personally prefer a traditional blued/wood lever gun, but I also like S/S levers with laminated stocks. And I also like many, but not all, of the tactical levers. But I definitely wouldn't want my only lever gun(s) to be tactical style.
