I don’t think I’ve ever watched your videos & not laugh. You provide not only valuable plant information, but loads of comic relief. You have enough plants & gab for daily videos. When you have time, you should make a video every day for a week. Thanks for being so cheerful & funny!
Ah I’ve fallen down the petevsplants hole. It’s nice to see his enthusiasm for plants and glad to know I’m not the only one struggling with plant addiction. Anyways, I think the mamei is a crawler, but I’ve forced my McDowell to grow vertical so I don’t think that’s the issue. But I do think it might stunt leaf growth. Anywho excited to see the progress on these props in various environments❤
Yes, I do enjoy your videos mostly because of who you are, which is the way you present this love of yours. You are a cool guy and a pleasant one. Thank you. You know we're going to learn something.
Definite yes for more diagnostic/problem solving videos! I don’t have the said plant but it was still interesting to see what was going on with it and how you dealt with it. Hope there is an update in few weeks time. It will be interesting to see how the propagations and the base are doing. Hope you have solved the problem and made happy, healthy plants!
Cheers, Gerda. The good thing (sort of) is that the same issue happens to most plants where the lower leaves yellow off, top ones shrink as they come out and get deformed, etc. and it's usually root rot associated I think. So hopefully you can apply these lessons to other indoor plants too.
Your thumbnail with so many funny faces made me feel so awkward? with your normal face🤣 Ive been watching your video since yesterday and i think they are so informative and fun. Thank you!🪴
Haha thanks, mate. Yeah, annoyingly it's what works best on UA-cam to get people to click on your thumbnails to watch the content. If you just have a standard normal face, people ignore it lol
Ive had similar issues with some of my plants leaving some of the old soil on and potting it in a chunky mix, then leaves start yellowing and curling like that. I used to be afraid of damaging the roots or shocking the plant by getting all the soil off, but on my most recent plant gets I just removed all the old soil right away and the are doing fine, so im going to do that from now on.
You treated that silver cloud like an ugly stepchild. Every time you said "I'm really not fazed" (or somethin along those lines) I felt the plant wilt a little more🥀 Seriously, good job. I enjoy learning from you. Thanks for the info.
I have a mamei, and mine is thriving. It does attract spider mites though. One observation is that mamei’s I believe are crawling philodendron so they don’t want to be crawling up a moss pole. I don’t know about the silver cloud but the mamei for sure is a crawler.

Glad to find your channel, I’m a plant lover from Auckland and wonderful to find an Aussie plant lover on UA-cam. I’m binge watching since I’m on holiday.
Oh Man! You finally realized. I was so relieved when you just pulled it all out. Look what you've missed thinking those little ones would recover in that condition. Ok, it was fighting, cool but look at the overall condition of the whole plant. It still was as you said, sheet. So glad you just ripped it all out of the pot. Add some peroxide to that soil if you'll use it again.
This type of video is interesting, we can all learn how to save plants. I received a few weeks ago a Half moon Monstera Albo and , because it was too cold, the stem and leaves melted. I could only save a tiny bit of the stem and 2 baby leaves. To my surprise the roots were good and no cold damage affected them. She activated 2 growth points, not the highest one as i expected, but the lower ones. Luckily they seem to be situated at the border between green and white , so i hope they will be half moon too. This is my first time propagating a half moon plant, so it will be interesting to see what happends . I am still sad that this happended but since i got my refund, i can take this as a learning experience 😅
Oh man, that sucks but glad it turned out worth it re: refund and learning experience. It's definitely good to have gown through this stuff for your own experience.
My silver cloud from bunnings has struggled heaps too. My mix was too dense. I ended up with a stump and I repotted it in a chunkier aroid mix and now it activated 3 growth points and I have a couple of leaves. When it gets bigger I'll let it crawl and see if it'll grow nicely. It's supposed to be a crawler rather than a climber. So maybe growing horizontally would help? Otherwise, bin this goes 😂
haha yeah, pretty much. I'll have to see how the propagations go. Every silver cloud I've seen so far has been on a pole hence assuming it was a climber... grrr
Not sure if anyone has answered. But from what I know and have seen, Mamei is a crawler while the Mamei Silver Cloud is a climber. That being said, my Silver Cloud is the slowest to "upsize". Have not had the time to focus on troubleshooting it. But! Not an urgent problem for now haha! All the best to yours!
@@petevsplants7516 Actually now that you mentioned it, I think yours is a Mamei. Silver Clouds have almost 50% silver on the leaves. While the Mamei has much lesser. And at 7:20 there is a shoot growing out of the sheath instead of directly a new leaf(not sure if its the same for the rest of your leaves). My Mamei Silver Cloud throws out a leaf directly from the sheath. Again, from my latest video, the first plant, is the Silver Cloud. Can check it out if you'd like. These are just based on the shoots and also silver on the leaves ya. There's also a difference in the wavy things on the petioles which is hard to see on yours. Now that you have many cuttings, might as well let one or two grow how it wants without poling to see what it really is.
The Philodendron Burl Marx have those wonky growth points It is just the way they grow. Suzettes Garden has several Mamei vidoes where she revived the Mamei I sent to her that I was having trouble with. She ended up chopping tte plant and propped it in Spag. Later setting the spag root ball on top of a pot of soil so the roots eventually grew down into the pot. Months later all the chopped props are doing really well.
They are crawling plants BUT, you can train them to climb with no issues. So it's definitely not that. Mine is doing the same thing, was beautiful and green/silver but now the leaves are yellowing so I'm going to dig her up and see if there's something going on with the roots. If I can't see anything then I too might end up chopping her as there's a new leaf about to unfurl. I don't want to risk the new leaf yellowing. I honestly wonder if they need more food than other plants.
@@petevsplants7516 it is probably a process of elimination lol. If it's not the roots then could it be a virus, if it's not a virus then could it be bugs etc 🤣 Philos are normally really hardy but mine are sassy lol
I have the same plant, and I have the same issues. What i have noticed is that the plant is super happy in spring/summer/autumn when out in the garden; as soon as she is back inside… the misery. Spider mites, yellow leaves and the grow point struggle. I live in Brussels, so cold/humid weather. For me, she survives inside with a lot of water and away from the grow light.
haha oh man, that sucks! Glad it gets to live its best life outside for 3/4 of the year though :D Hope you work out what the issue is when brought inside and you can fix it :D
So long as you're cleaning up after yourself, the missus shouldn't get pissy imho. Just like any hobby. Keep ya shit tidy and clean up any mess ya make and it should all be sweet. At least in theory. Humans can be odd critters sometimes. lol The monstrosity you mention at 18:15, I'd just leave as is in its own pot and see what it does.
