The Eagles 1982 "The Strangest Season" was the last one for Dick Vermeil as Eagles HC. He did return to the coaching ranks in 1997 with the then-St. Louis Rams (now LA Rams) and led the Rams to a Super Bowl championship (SB XXXIV) before retiring after SB XXXIV only to return in 2001 with the Kansas City Chiefs before retiring for good in 2005. in between his Eagles and Rams HC stints, Vermeil spent the 1983 thru 1996 seasons as a football game commentator for CBS and ABC.

@@juliansmith1951 , when Vermeil became a NFL game analyst for CBS in 1983, he first worked alongside Frank Glieber. Summerall and Madden was CBS' #1 NFL broadcast team - but during the 1983 and 1984 seasons, the Glieber and Vermeil broadcast team was just as good as Summerall-Madden and Enberg-Olsen on NBC.

The 7 games that the strike wiped out for Philadelphia were:
    Week 3 - Rams @ Eagles
    Week 4 - Eagles @ Packers
    Week 5 - Eagles @ Steelers (Mon.)
    Week 6 - Cowboys @ Eagles
    Week 8 - Eagles @ Cardinals
    Week 9 - Lions @ Eagles
    Week 10 - Eagles @ Falcons (Mon.)
(To this day, the Eagles & Steelers have never played on Monday Night Football. Every game since 1963 has been played on a Sunday afternoon.)
To salvage 1 week's worth of games, the NFL extended the regular season by 1 week, sacrificing the usual off week before the Super Bowl. The game that was salvaged for the Eagles was their Week 7 game vs the Giants, which they lost, 26-24 to end the season.

@@conlanding It was September 1984. In our school there was a rumor that Harry Kalas died and when he didn't narrate the week 5 highlights, we all thought it was true. Found out Kalas was doing the '84 MLB playoffs and couldn't commit to the NFL announcing, so we were relieved he was still alive. We knew someone related NFL Films has passed away but back then it was really hard to know w/o the internet. Unfortunately is was John Facenda - who was a legend.

Five of the six Eagles losses that year came by four points or less. I bet Vermeil would've still coached had they won those games.

Eagles' 4-season run, playoff appearances (dating back to 1978-1979 aeason) was snapped that 1982-1983 season. They wouldn't see llnd season action again till 1988-1989 season
