When Seahawks defeated the Eagles in 2017, it was the worst defeat they endured during their Championship run Same goes to Tampa Bay when they lost to the Saints last year in week 9 matchup, but the Bucs went on to win the SB
This was the first football game I remember ever getting invested in and watching all the way through. 9 year old me’s first day as an Eagle’s fan. Of course they immediately went from Super Bowl pick to not even making the playoffs right after this to get me used to the lifetime of disappointment that was to come.
Haha same except I was 7 and I chose to be a 49er fan after this game because of Jerry Rice, i had a eagles starter jacket too. Was happy for Cunningham in 98
My first Niners game. Even though we lost, turns out this was the game where the players were inspired by Steve's passion to get back in and try to at least put something on the board. It impressed all his teammates and was the game that turned the season around. Sheifert made the right call to pull Steve. Sheifert doesn't get enough accolades for his contributions to the 49ers. He should be in the HOF.
If you watched this game in 94 it was hard to believe that The Eagles would miss the playoffs. If you watched this game it would also be hard to believe that this would be the last game The 49ers would lose until week 17.
The 1994 Eagles also ranked #2 on NFL Network’s Top 10 Worst Collapses list. Starting at 7-2 and finishing 7-9. Rich Kotite was fired after the season ended.
After he was benched, Steve Young actually tried sparking a physical altercation with George Seifert, the 49ers head coach, by shouting insulting things at him. All-time great QBs do occasionally have awful games of this sort. Tom Brady has had a couple and Aaron Rodgers had one recently against the Saints.
I remember watching this game and I have never seen before and I have to get crushed like this before this game.. a lot of the 49er players said that in a way this kind of helped us because they were really confident that they're going to play the Dallas cowboys in the NFC championship game.. they thought that they can roll up into teams and said hey brother the 49ers but no this was a tough lesson for them and you realize that they have to work for every inch and after this game the 49ers basically destroyed everybody and they had a tough win against the Dallas cowboys.... I was around 12 years old when I saw this game and I almost cried because of it
Clearly the L was worth it. After this game, and the comeback against Detroit the following week the squad just never looked back. This is probably the one loss I didn't internally cringe when you uploaded it. Thanks, and keep continuing to spotlight the classics. Go Niners :D
The Eagles may have been the best team in football during the first half of that 1994 season. And then came the second half... God bless Rich Kotite. One of the most incompetent coaches ever. Lest we forget later in the season when they played the Falcons, and the Eagles came up short on 3rd down but a penalty was called on the Falcons. Faced with the option of repeating 3rd down or declining and going for it on 4th and inches, Kotite declined the penalty... only to punt the ball away
To be fair, a massive injury bug crippled this Eagles team. In the end, I might be wrong but I think Kotite had a better season and playoff record than either Ryan and Rhodes.
In retrospect, George Seifert actually made a wise call in pulling Steve Young before the end of the game. Seifert is not known for benching players, (let alone quarterbacks) having a bad game. His teams were never bad enough to that point. But considering the hits Young took not only in this game, but in the 3 games leading up to this one, Seifert did Young a favor by not risking him a potential season-ending injury. Obviously, Young was angry. But it ultimately galvanized the whole 49er team that ended up winning 10 straight to close out the regular season. And oh yes, they finally dethroned the Cowboys when it counted and won that 5th Lombardi. Very underrated coach George Seifert was. He knew that he inherited a winning formula from Bill Walsh. He also knew that he had players that would get the job done and was willing to trust them.
I swear this is the game that turned the season because they came out ready to play the rest of the season and playoffs. It seemed to light a fire and hey those throwback uniforms were pretty cool as well - that was like their good luck charm.
