The 1964 Philadelphia Eagles marked a new era. They swapped veteran quarterback Sonny Jurgensen to Washington to for Norm Snead.
Joe Kuharich was the new head coach. He was infamously known for gutting the roster by trading stars and acquiring journeymen in
return. One of the few decent trades came when the Birds acquired
running back Ollie Matson, who gave them three good seasons.
The Eagles would enjoy only one winning season in Kuharich's
five seasons behind the bench (1964-68), but he was known for drinking
from the water bucket during games. Rookie offensive tackle Bob Brown
began his Hall of Fame career in an Eagles uniform; he was one of the few players who actually enjoyed playing for Kuharich, and when he was
sacked after the 1968 season, Brown asked to be traded.

Big, strong, and very athletic for the position, Bob Brown was probably the best NFL offensive tackle of his era.

That’s a fantastic hilite video. Norm Snead wasn’t consistently good but he certainly had a perfect from behind the ear throwing motion. Retzlaff was a great sure handed receiver and Timmy Brown was simply electric. An aging Ollie Matson still had good wheels and Earl Gros had a good season. Strange that Gros was only featured in the early part of the film. I’ll have to check to see if he got injured and missed some games. I always enjoy seeing film of Joe Scarpati. He had a real nose for the ball.
1960s NFL was the best, even though I wasn’t old enough to experience most of the decade. Thankfully, we have these great films to enjoy.

Joe Scarpati, only about 5'10", supposedly beat the crap out of a linemen when the Eagles voted whether to play the Sunday after Kennedy lost. The lineman said something pejorative about Kennedy, and Joe went off on him and challenged him to a fist fight. The locker room cleared out. They went at it and Scarpati kicked the bigger man's ass!

Matson one of many from the U of San Francisco undefeated Dons 1951 team that played in the NFL. The quarterback was Ed Brown, then playing in '64 with the Steelers, who had St. Mary's of Moraga's John Henry Johnson. Good college football in the Bay Area in those days, with Santa Clara, Stanford, Cal, St. Mary's, San Jose State. Then the Catholic schools dropped football.

Swapping Snead for Jurgensen was a very dumb trade

Good film. The NY Giants were way, way over the hill in 1964. I believe the average age on the team was 31. They came in last place at 2-12 after winning the Eastern Conference the year before.

I went to my first Eagles game at Franklin Field! I was there for the infamous Santa Snowball event! He didn't quite get to me, but I was ready to throw.
