  • This Video is sponsored by Pearl Abyss. Download Black Desert on mobile bit.ly/3ahrWLM and on console bit.ly/3r0xsrY . In this video we help bring the new character class Nova to life by forging her devastating weapon. Ilya challenged himself to forge as much to shape without having to use a grinder. Only the spikes were ground and the rest was forged on a power hammer or by hand. No welding was used either as all of the pieces were hot fit in the forging. This was a blast to make and showed how making swages and other tooling can be truly effective when having to make repetitive shapes. Black Desert's new class Nova is a fantastic design. Not only this weapon but her armor is top notch as well. You can fully customize your avatar in Black Desert so that you too can wield Nova's amazing weapons and armor.

Watching the close-ups of the spikes I thought: "Wouldn't a hand-grinder do a good job of sharpening those spikes a bit more?" But nevermind, that is a solid ball of spiked metal, it's more than enough to F up pretty much any fleshy thing it comes in contact with. Great build, and love the practicality of, as you call it, auto-temper and no need for welding. So elegant (in a devastating way).

Love how you showed that parts can be permanently joined by using the heat expansion of the material
Extra points - the effect is greater if the cold parts are very cold and put in quickly.
(With larger pieces like industrial equipment sizes the difference in size of heated part and cold part can be so large as to accommodate an upset or mushroom of the cold part with a cavity in the hot part)
And then the whole of the piece is temperature normalized together (cooled heated but not timpered)

Beautiful work, boys! I really enjoyed the method of embedded the spikes. Not sure what I would have done to solve that problem, myself. Probably thread them I suppose.

@That Works I am an Ambassador for Kakao Games, specifically pertaining to Black Desert Online. I really enjoyed this video as I am sure many Black Desert fans would. I also suspect that many will point out that the amazing weapon you have crafted in this video does not have a chain, while the Nova main weapon, the Morning Star has a retracting chain attached to the spiked ball. It can be seen in most of the game play videos that can be found on Pearl Abyss' videos covering the Nova class as well as many other videos from players of Black Desert who are playing on a Nova. That being said, the weapon you crafted in this video, more of a mace and not a morning star, is still wicked awesome and totally enjoyable! Please know that we over at Kakao Games greatly enjoyed this video and would look forward to you perhaps crafting other weapons from Black Desert!

Trust me, I get your appreciation for a fictional weapon made very real. The majority of the channel is fictional weapons made real (as is the one before it). So something brought me here...ya dig?
This just wasn't a game I cared for.
The weapon however, can be appreciated without any gameplay. The creation of this has so many pieces/steps/choke points that from a smith's perspective.....so impressive, I don't need to care about the game... which is what makes this such a great channel.

Ilya, any ideas on the methods of construction for medieval flanged maces? I've heard various theories on flange attachment. They seemed ubiquitous, so the method must have been common.
