Glad this scene never made the final cut... So many issues with it... The obvious ones are that bullets BOUNCE OFF Superman so he would immediately know they were blanks, secondly, it is way off character regarding Lois and it would RIDICULE Kal-El being so easily manipulated! The one that we got, though a bit silly, with him tripping over a mattress' head and sticking his hand in the fire, shows it was an actual accident, given how he thumped his hand afterwards in frustration... It was funny to see Kal bumbling like Clark only this time for real, not just as an act!
Yes, this was not intended as a final cut. It was cobbled together from the test shots that Donner had filmed before being fired by the Salkind's. It is far superior to the Lester scene that was used in the theatrical release.
