@@joaniekeyser4036 Part of growing up was to get past his father dominating his life. Unfortunately, this led to him disarming the world in Superman IV. That could be done in reality if we had one-world government, I suppose.
Despite its flaws, I enjoy the Donner Cut more. I watched the theatrical version last night. I was actually surprised at some of the elements they left out. It still has some great moments, though. I think the ending is stronger in that one. It's a shame the best of both haven't been combined to form some sort of SUPERMAN II Definitive Cut. That would probably be the best Superman movie ever.
They could have animated or used storyboards for the missing or changed scenes in Superman II. Of course, Donner bears some blame in chickening out on the cliffhanger ending he supposedly had for Superman I. It's almost impossible to imagine an ending for that where Superman doesn't turn back time, but saves it for the end of II.
Totally agree. As much as I prefer certain scenes like this one in the Donner cut, there are also a lot of really campy scenes that I could do without. I also didn't especially like the fortress climax in the Donner version as much as the theatrical release.
It’s a shame they didn’t have any close-ups of Margot Kidder. I’m assuming they were lost. There is no question Donner would have shot close-ups and used them in this sequence. Christopher reeves was so fantastic here. He really was an incredible actor. Underrated and underappreciated.
coming back and watching Reeve's fantastic performance gives me a new appreciation for Brandon Routh's portrayal in Superman Returns. He emulates Reeve's delivery and expression so well, i think
Right on, Quinn! Superman Returns was a super movie!!!! The homo-phobes like Kevin Smith decided to run a smear campaign against it for reasons we'll probably never really know.

This is such an amazing scene! The son of "god" asking his father to relinquish his powers and his divine duties to be mankind's saviour, protector and guide because he has fallen in love with a human woman. It shows just how "human" superman is and how lonely the life of the messiah is. Superman is such a bright and joyful character who symbolises hope but it's moments like this when you realise that there is a sadness in him.......knowing that he didn't just loose his parents or family.........he lost his entire civilisation because the people of Krypton couldn't overcome their differences and work together to save themselves.
@@AzguardMike it took a year for someone to respond to that? I thought that was humor gold. Oh well, thanks for the comment... and yes definitely what Lois should have said.
Did Kal-El honestly think Lois being as superficial as she actually is would have stayed with plain old Clark? I think the sparkle she thought she had would have worn out once she got use to the idea the man she idolized can no longer fly her anywhere anymore.
the next scene with him confirms as such when he gets knocked down by another guy and she says something about wanting to be with the man she loves and Clark replies with "I know you do Lois. He's just not here anymore." Because Lois loves Superman, not Clark.
Amazing ! So much better than Lester's version. I love how jor-el gives lois a death stare for being the reason he does this. I also love how cal-el says " selfish ? After all I've done for them " such a powerful scene. Why couldnt he stay superman & still be with lois? Why did he have to lose his powers.
Such an awesome scene and the Donner Cut team did a great job putting this together. The theatrical version (Richard Lester) with Lara is also excellent, with arguably better dialog, a more mature-looking Christopher Reeve, and a wonderful detail of Lara stepping out of the crystal. Everything also looks much more polished, plus it features Lois/Margot Kidder, which Donner hadn't yet shot for this scene. However, THIS version is the best because it's father, not mother. This whole conversation MUST be with his father! I don't care about pay disputes, the decision to cut Jor-El/Brando out of the movie was SO stupid, since it's all about him, really! Kal-El is to Superman what God is to Jesus. Another detail I love about this one is that moment at the end when Jor-El looks up at Lois. It's chilling, because up until that point you don't think the hologram is even aware of her, but there's actually a look of judgement! Scary stuff! Amazing film! :-)
@@Dana_inc Drugs and alcohol took her in May 2018. And what's really sad is that Margot was schedule (that month) to appear at Motor City ComiCon for the 40th anniversary of the first Superman movie. Her booth was still displayed to allow fans to mourn.
Superman 2 is basically the Last Temptation of Superman: Superman gives up his powers in order to live with the human woman he loves, but discovers he can't have that life soon enough. This scene is from the Donner Cut, filmed in 1977 but only assembled for released in 2006. It's a little clunky - you can tell they needed a stand-in for the depowering itself (it was never filmed for this cut) - but still starkly different in feel to the scene that ended-up in the theatrical release of "Superman 2", where Superman talks to his mother instead of his father about his sincere love for Lois Lane. Instead, it feels more (tonally) like the first Superman film and the scenes with Jor-El in them.
Brando sued said he wasn't paid what they were suppose to pay him. I guess they worked out the problems were able to re-cut this one glad they did Brando sure did a fine job.
Lois attraction for him went down about 50 percent immediately after this. And even more after he gets his ass kicked by that meathead at the diner. Lol.
I liked both versions of this scene equally. Susannah York also did an outstanding job as Kal-El's mother, even though her role was small. Her delivery resonated as well as Brando's. But the Donner cut was interesting for revealing Kal-El's true feelings about not wanting to be in service to humanity forever.
I liked _Supergirl_ starring Helen Slater, and wondered how that would go forward with Jimmy learning Superman's identity and Superman learning about his people alive in Innerspace (Argo City). I imagine they could have done a movie where Brainiac takes a city from Krypton (Kandor) so there's even more of his people alive somewhere. Another version in the comics has him mating with Wonder Woman, although they don't seem to be a married couple.
His father re-educated him, although Clark had an OK upbringing, not being cruel, selfish or vain. After he realizes he made a mistake, his father gives him one more chance, but then pretty much says, "I've taught you enough, time to be your own man."
I honestly don't think Lois Lane would be so selfish and allow Superman to forsake his powers for her love. She would yell, "Stop! You can't do this! I'm not worth it! The world needs you!" She would even lie and say she doesn't really love him, or that it was just puppy love. Lois has her own code of honor, and she would never let Superman go through with it.
If they wanted to make it more "modern", then after Kal-El emerges from the chamber as Clark Kent, Lois says; "I think we should break up. It's just that you've changed & are not the same man I fell in love with. We'll always be friends." Clark
Thought it odd that he went to talk to his father and didn't consult Lois about it before doing it. Jor-el looked at her with hatred, to give her the chance to speak up and tell him not to do it, but she didn't. "I don't want a bodyguard, I want the man I fell in love with," said Lois. "I wish he were here," said Clark while bleeding. She's shallow and selfish, but he had to learn the hard way that it wouldn't work out. She even admits to being mean to Clark. Then she breaks down and becomes a hysteric over working alongside him. Instead of the magic kiss, I would have had Clark/Superman give her a crystal to take away part of her memory. The only thing worth watching again in _Superman III_ was Clark's relationship with Lana. I think they could have made a couple.

Christopher Reeve was amazing, a great man, beautiful on the outside and confident on the inside, that's why he is the best. Superman is the closest thing he played him very well. Sad ending for him. He was a great man.
Christopher Reeve was such an underrated actor. Look at this scene and the one in the theatrical cut back to back. Despite the dialogue being very similar, Reeve finds a way to add different textures to each interaction: with Jor El his “father… I love her!” Line is very pointed and defiant, as he knows his father is trying to scare him and dissuade him. While the line “mother… I love her.” Is said with such sweetness and warmth, as Lara is more frightened for him.
Is this not how you make a Successful Superman movie. Damn this was so epic!! Still my favorite movie of all time!! Reeve, Brando, and Williams = Perfection P.s Margot looks amazing standing there😍😍
The Richard donner cut of Superman 2 was a great alternate version! Great to see these extra scenes of Jorel!! Marlon Brando's protrayal of Jorel was on point!!
The contrast between both this scene with his father and the scene with his mother. This is the first time I’ve seen this. As much as I loved the Superman series then, I would of liked to see this one over the one initially in theaters with his mother.
I read the script today for Superman II from 1977 and the best part that was cut was his interactions with Jor-el. Runner up would be the burning of Tokyo and Moscow. Third is the kid is about to fall over Niagara Falls in a rowboat, not fall for 30 seconds. Even the Donner version needed some rewrites. After catching a bullet in _Superman,_ he should be able to tell the gun held blanks. Hit him with a crowbar or try to cut him in his sleep. It would have had Clark and Lois kissing to practice for the Kissing Contest mentioned. Also Clark walks in on her coming out the shower. Fortunately they moved the Leaning Tower of Pisa scenes to _Superman III._
I always wondered how did he and Lois get back to civilization after this. I know they pulled up to the diner in a car after this but it's quite a long trek to get to any main road or even a road trucks would use in the Artic. I guess maybe the Artic Patrol shown in the deleted scene near the end of the movie got them back to civilization. Also people commenting about Lara and which is the better version of this scene. What you have to understand is that Superman and Superman 2 are one complete movie/story arc. If you watch the scene on Krypton when Jor-El tells Kal-El that the son becomes the father and the father the son then this scene makes more sense in context. As Donner said in the DVD Commentary it was never about the mother when talking about this scene in Lester's version. Even in the original shooting script the two movies were always about the relationship between Kal-El and Jor-El.
I might be nitpicking, but I found it interesting that Clark says that he's willing to surrender his powers for Lois, yet he flies down to the chamber - which suggests that he's not ready to become human. If he were really that committed to the conversion, why not walk down instead?
My god, Reeve is just so damn good as Supes. He plays Clark, Superman, Kal-El as 3 different personalities. His speech pattern, body language, the whole nine. There will never be an actor who captures that essence nearly as much as him.

He was Superman!! Love Richard Donner's version took it further why Superman who he was. RIP Christopher Reeve and to all them not with us.
That very Definitive Cut film is among my ongoing projects.
That very Definitive Cut film is among my ongoing projects.
@@robertwheelock7444 how's it coming along?
Totally agree. As much as I prefer certain scenes like this one in the Donner cut, there are also a lot of really campy scenes that I could do without. I also didn't especially like the fortress climax in the Donner version as much as the theatrical release.
It’s a shame they didn’t have any close-ups of Margot Kidder. I’m assuming they were lost. There is no question Donner would have shot close-ups and used them in this sequence. Christopher reeves was so fantastic here. He really was an incredible actor. Underrated and underappreciated.
This is Donner’s cut, it was replaced due to due to the Salkinds firing Donner and not paying Brando

coming back and watching Reeve's fantastic performance gives me a new appreciation for Brandon Routh's portrayal in Superman Returns. He emulates Reeve's delivery and expression so well, i think

I always thought the same.
I believe Routh really did his homework on that.
Right on, Quinn! Superman Returns was a super movie!!!! The homo-phobes like Kevin Smith decided to run a smear campaign against it for reasons we'll probably never really know.
Wrong...Routh is just a copy cat. Not his own. He wasn't trying to be Superman. Routh was trying to play Reeve's Superman.
@@renesoto-pintor2916 uh, that was the point. He was playing the same Superman.
@@renesoto-pintor2916 as above, Brandon Routh is playing Christopher Reeve's Superman. They're the same Superman/continuity/universe (Earth 96) just a different actor for obvious reasons. It would've been ridiculous if Routh hadn't copied Reeve's version.

Kind of like Prince Harry leaving the royal family, right?

Did Kal-El honestly think Lois being as superficial as she actually is would have stayed with plain old Clark? I think the sparkle she thought she had would have worn out once she got use to the idea the man she idolized can no longer fly her anywhere anymore.
the next scene with him confirms as such when he gets knocked down by another guy and she says something about wanting to be with the man she loves and Clark replies with "I know you do Lois. He's just not here anymore." Because Lois loves Superman, not Clark.
Jor-El fatherly advice is timeless: Think Kal-el!!
Amazing ! So much better than Lester's version. I love how jor-el gives lois a death stare for being the reason he does this. I also love how cal-el says " selfish ? After all I've done for them " such a powerful scene. Why couldnt he stay superman & still be with lois? Why did he have to lose his powers.
Once his father was gone, then he could do as he thinks best; "The son becomes the father; the father becomes the son."
Same reason Spider-Man had to dump Mary Jane. 😂 And why the Jedi can't have girlfriends.
I love Lois' outfit
CRISTOPHER REEVE' es SUPERMAN' por SIEMPRE.
I love how Jorel looks up as if he knows Lois is there and she backs up as if she can feel his stare.
I LOVE how Jor-El looks up at her. The silent condemnation...
The Most Handsome and charismatic actor to ever play Superman. Brandon Routh is right behind...

I feel so sorry for Margot Kidder. Her life ended so tragic. it's just not right, considering who she was in 1979.

They couldn't afford to use Brando's footage the first time around.
I feels better, wish they could have used the Brando footage.
Phil Obbard 1980

Brando sued said he wasn't paid what they were suppose to pay him. I guess they worked out the problems were able to re-cut this one glad they did Brando sure did a fine job.
Lois attraction for him went down about 50 percent immediately after this. And even more after he gets his ass kicked by that meathead at the diner. Lol.
The way Jorel LOOKS at Lois in the end...!
RIP Richard Donner
Christopher Reece was one handsome man and no one could ever deny that. Those beautiful eyes would go right to your heart.
Saving a world will never be a personal happiness.
Lois in the superman top really cracks me up
LOL! It's really bad!
1979
This depowering was far more intense than the original. You can sense the disappointment of Jor-El and the desperation of Clark Kent when they speak.
His father re-educated him, although Clark had an OK upbringing, not being cruel, selfish or vain. After he realizes he made a mistake, his father gives him one more chance, but then pretty much says, "I've taught you enough, time to be your own man."
Even John Williams music sounds Great
Because John Williams is the man!
That look at 4:33 Jor-El gives Lois!
I agree. He looks as if he's about to say "You bitch!"
She sure wasn't in love with the guy that DIDN'T have the superpowers.
If they wanted to make it more "modern", then after Kal-El emerges from the chamber as Clark Kent, Lois says;
"I think we should break up. It's just that you've changed & are not the same man I fell in love with. We'll always be friends."
Clark
This was so much better than the theatrical version ! The dialog between Kal-El and Jor-El almost seemed Shakespearean in a way too.
*That’s what we call a Reality Tunnel -*

Christopher Reeve was amazing, a great man, beautiful on the outside and confident on the inside, that's why he is the best. Superman is the closest thing he played him very well. Sad ending for him. He was a great man.
Am I crazy or is this way better than the Superman movies of today?
Christopher Reeve was such an underrated actor. Look at this scene and the one in the theatrical cut back to back. Despite the dialogue being very similar, Reeve finds a way to add different textures to each interaction: with Jor El his “father… I love her!” Line is very pointed and defiant, as he knows his father is trying to scare him and dissuade him. While the line “mother… I love her.” Is said with such sweetness and warmth, as Lara is more frightened for him.

The contrast between both this scene with his father and the scene with his mother. This is the first time I’ve seen this. As much as I loved the Superman series then, I would of liked to see this one over the one initially in theaters with his mother.
Never give up your power for a woman, Never!
It’s sad we will never get the true Richard Donner version of SII
It could also be a blessing in disguise though, because I love the iconic ending of the first one, and I feel like it fit perfectly there :/
I read the script today for Superman II from 1977 and the best part that was cut was his interactions with Jor-el.
Well at least this knowledge came in handy when it came to dealing with the Zod family.😊
His dad is an absolute Chad
I might be nitpicking, but I found it interesting that Clark says that he's willing to surrender his powers for Lois, yet he flies down to the chamber - which suggests that he's not ready to become human. If he were really that committed to the conversion, why not walk down instead?
He loves her like helllllllll
