Have to hand it to you, Daniel. I caught a few other chess channels during this tournament trying to cover other games but no one comes close to your analysis; I realized some of the others just repeat engine moves and now understand how much effort you must be putting to make these videos. Am already looking forward to your expert take on the Candidates. Thank you, and please keep going.
One incentive for Caruana's efforts to win in the final round may have been that with 10/13 (+7) he equals the record results of Kasparov (1999) & Carlsen (2013) in the modern era of Wijk aan Zee, since the 14-player format was established in 96. (The best result in the tournament's history is still Korchnoi's 12/15 [80%] from 68, but that was in a considerably weaker event than the super-tournaments of our era.) Caruana's performance may be considered even more dominant than those of Kasparov & Carlsen if we take into account the gap of full 2 points from 2nd place (in 13 Carlsen was "only" 1.5 points ahead of Aronian; in 99 Kasparov 0.5 point ahead of Anand).
7 Wins at Tata is amazing. Live ratings show that Fabi gained almost 20 points to 2841 , while Magnus lost almost 10 to 2862. In 2019, the gap was 50-60 pts. Shows how quick things can change.
@@macleadg Yes, but that was during the world champ match in Nov 2018. As I recall, Fab was high 2820s or low 2830s at the start and Magnus in the low 2840s. They played 12 straight draws with Carlsen losing a fraction of pt each time and Fabi gaining a fraction every game. The gap was 2-3 pts. In 2019, Magnus won a string of tournaments and was quickly in the 2660s and by august, he was 2882. Meanwhile, Caruana had dipped to 2812 . The gap was close to 70 pts at times.
Interesting how history repeats itself. The famous Ka-Ka matches between 1984-1990 and now we are in the era of Ca-Ca. Fabi is huge favourite to win the Candidates with this level of play. Loved his fighting spirit and great attitude. Amazing commentary as always by Daniel.
For lovers of statistics and funny stuff: Grenke Chess Classics 2018, Candidates 2018 and Tata steel 2020... in all these occasions Caruana had black in the last round and didn't need a win to achieve the first place. But he won anyway. A true fighter, surely he's not lazy. Or maybe he's addicted to these "victory laps".
The Candidates 2018 wasn't as clear as you are making out! It depended on other results (I was there in Berlin and recall a very tense final day). But I agree with your general point: he plays very naturally and consistently, even in pressure situations.
@@PowerPlayChess yes, this was before the last round had begun... But if I'm not mistaken, he had the black pieces against Grischuk, the other games had ended way before, and a draw was enough for the first place. He had a slight advantage and could seal a draw at any moment, but pressed for a win in a long battle. I remember Gustafsson and Svidler yawning during the live commentary, as to say "come on, just seal a draw and let's go have a beer!". But no!...
@@PowerPlayChess I agree with that. But my point is that Caruana at the end of his game had a choice: offer a draw Grischuk coundn't refuse or press for a win? I'm not sure of how much advantage he had when the other games ended, if slight or huge. I remember a not-so-trivial-type of position, but maybe I'm wrong and the game was already practically won.
Great performance by Caruana yet again, not going for the simple draw. As he mentioned in the press conference he just felt he got a bit better position out of the opening and his judgment to play on was absolutely correct. A very nice positional squeeze and great calculation. Thank you Dani and Yannick for a fantastic coverage, you are the greatest chess analysts.
This was a great performance, but in 2014 Caruana scored plus-7 against a much tougher field at the Sinquefield Cup. That was the best elite tournament performance in all of chess history. TPR of nearly 3100!
I hope not. I am very impressed with his tournament play but many people, including me, don't want another 12 draws in World Championship Match. Give someone else a chance.
@@lashabezhanishvili9034 who else has a decent chance? Maybe ding but ding is also known to play a lot of 'safe' games and doesn't risk too much. At least caruana had magnus on his toes and could've won the match if he found that knight move in that endgame. Caruana is the only one who can truly tear apart magnus in classical chess
@@I_Am_Midnight-i Not sure. Only Aronian could outplay Carlsen in middlegame few years ago. Ding might have a chance now. Grischuk has been preparing with Alphazero recently, so hoping he would do well as well. Also, nobody knows what Radjabov will do. If he really prepares, he will have a chance. If he decides to just enjoy his rich life, then he is waste of space in candidates.
@@lashabezhanishvili9034 Lasha you're speaking like Kasha. Let another one to make 16 draws? WTF? Chess is so studied and it's so difficult to win when the opponent makes no mistakes....

Incredible Fabiano! I think with this performance he once again established himself as clear number 2 in the world. Last year at some point it was very close between Fabi and Ding, but in this form, Fabi should be the favorit to win the candidates.
Magnus remains superior in faster time controls should Fabiano qualify and reach the WCC again. And it would only get to a tiebreak if he holds Fabiano first. Despite his long un-losing streak, Magnus might well slip up, especially based on the way Fabiano is playing at the moment.
Looks like this was peak Caruana at 2820 rating and winning a big tournament. The pandemic immediately followed and these years saw a significant decline in rating and results, including a disastrous showing at the Candidates.
Caruana: 10/13, Rating rising from 2822 to 2841. Caruana or Ding have a great chance of winning the candidates. I think Caruana or Ding can, will, still become world champion!

He was also suffering from a cold or flu, but fought for the win anyway. Much respect to Fabi.
Thanks for the brilliant analysis during this tournament Daniel. Miles better than any other chess channel.
Thank you for your efforts in covering this tournament, delighting us, every step of the way with awesome 👏 insights!
Thanks for your brilliant coverage Danny . It was some performance by Fabi and yours wasn't too shabby either !
It was a pleasure to watch Fabi calculating all that end. Impressive. Him finding out that would not be a perpetual was as nice as possible.

15:00 If the king steps to the h-file, then this (Rh8check) is devastating ... No, Qxh8
Indeed, so simply ...Rxf3 instead.

I think GM King was tired when he made the vid, overlooking Black's Qxd1+ right away at the 17:50 mark. Still a good watch, though!
Amazing performance from Fabi. Anyone know his tournament performance rating?
2945
1 million.
Ike Jespersen 2945. Only 1,000 points higher than me...
Congratulations to Fabiano on a superior performance!
17:50 I think Rxd1+ might work :-)
Yes ...Qxd1+ immediately of course.
I wonder if Fabi put the bishop all the way on a7 hoping to trick white into playing Qa1.
ended up looking like a st. georges defence!

When does the candidates start?
At 15:07 you are telling nonsense...The queen protects h8
Good game but I still think Magnus defeats Caruana in a rematch.
A bit too much paint on the board this time for me, I found it a bit distracting. Still, I loved the analysis as usual! Thank you!!
