  • If you are working towards removing toxins from your home, you have likely concentrated a lot of your efforts in the kitchen. After all, you spend time and resources sourcing and preparing high quality food in your home, so you want to make sure you are not reversing all of that progress by cooking in pots and pans that pose a risk to your health. In this episode, Molly Hill of Maison Pur joins me as we walk through cookware, bakeware, dinnerware, food storage, small appliances, etc. Molly definitely gave me some new things to consider about a few of the pieces in my own kitchen!
    In this episode, we cover:
    - All things cast iron: why we love it, how we use it, how to clean and care for it
    - Why it’s worth it to remove toxins from your kitchen
    - How to choose quality stainless steel pieces
    - Uses for copper + concerns about copper
    - A trusted source for cookware, bakeware, and more
    - The problem with Teflon and the confusion surrounding its safety
    - Cookware coatings to avoid
    - Toxicity concerns with small appliances: Instant Pot, Crock Pot, Air Fryer
    - Safe choices for dinnerware + cups for kids

I recommend beeswax wraps to use over the things in the fridge instead of foil. Another thing I was a bit concerned about when recommended was the thrifted cast iron. Cast iron pans, antique ones could have been used to melt lead for making lead balls for ammunition at one time. I don't know if there is an easy way to test it? So, I would err on the side of caution and just use a newly purchased cast iron. "IF YOU CARE" brand of parchment paper is the safest to use if you are going to use parchment paper. Another thing I think they should have discussed is using vintage/antique tea cups to drink coffee or tea from. Most of them are full of lead from the paint or glaze.

About sanitizing the cast iron- you can dry your pans on the heat after cleaning them out with water and they'll reach like four bajillion degrees in like two seconds. If it can singe your skin off, the germs are dead. It's more sanitary than a dishwasher!

Lisa I started using a stainless steel scrubber because you did, but it didn't go so well. I actually scrubbed thru the seasoning and it developed a thin layer of rust. I've since researched it and they are not recommended to use on them because it does remove the seasoning.
The pyrex visions cookware are also a great alternative for cooking. Be careful as some do come w non stick coating, but I've read this can be removed.

About iron consumption. I read somewhere that it’s good for younger women who are still having their menses. They definitely still need iron. Post-menopausal women do not need as much iron. I agree that if you use cast iron for most meals and have concerns you should just have your doctor check your levels. Something we should probably have done ever so often anyways. Great topic today for the podcast. Thanks.

This was interesting! I had an inkling that the coated cast iron pans were probably not all that great. I have one coated cast iron dutch oven that is pretty chipped/worn off. It has been sitting next to my sink for months (embarrassed to say!) as I figure out what to do with it. So today, it finally got moved outside to be used as a planter or something! Ugh... I do need some new bakeware, though. USA Pan has been so easy to use for me, but I know they have a nonstick coating that is probably not so great.😔

😁FYI…I have used cast iron all of my life…and I’m 63 (and I love your channel, Lisa!). I always wash mine in the soapy water. So did my sweet mother and grandmother. I make sure to rinse and dry right away. Sometimes I use avocado oil and wipe it with a paper towel. I always heat it up before using it. Then put any oil in and cook away! LOVE MY CAST IRON MOST OF ALL! Great info here. I try really hard to have a safe home and feed my family healthy organic meals and so appreciate this conversation. Thanks!

Just a little caviot, I bought a pizza sheet, just says non stick. I washed it with soap and water, then put it in the oven at 400 just to see if anything burnt off for 15 min. I like Pyrex for food storage, although my husband seems to love to drop the lids! I'm slightly scared of cast iron, mainly because I have a beautiful new white quartz surface and white ceramic sink and I'm scared someone will leave a wet pan on the side. I use Le cruset pans which are enamel coated and I thought it was a good safe option so will have to do some research. I really like my enamel coated Dutch oven and have used it for years but how much things stick is very dependent on how you cook. We have an induction hob and I find that stuff gets stuck on much much less than with a standard electric hob or gas hob.
Completely agree with the whole 'if something is approved it's not necessarily safe' car seats are a great example of this, I'm in the UK and our testing is woefully inadequate.

"Copper" pans are actually tin-lined. It's not an alloy, it's just tin. You can look up youtube videos showing coppersmiths retinning copper pots.
There is a great book by Sara Dahmen called, "Copper, Iron, and Clay - A smith's journey" and she goes over tin-lined copper pots, cast iron, and clay. Cast iron will eventually rust away to nothing, but tin-lined copper pots get retinned every ten years at the most and last forever.
I'm switching to tin-lined copper because I figure I can get a hair mineral analysis eventually and see if I have high tin and know if it's an issue. I like the historic aspect and the fact that it's even more long lasting than cast iron.
I also own a near infrared sauna from sauna space for getting out metals from my body and I drink bentonite clay for that as well.
There is one use for a plain copper pan without a tin lining and that's for making jam, it's something about the high sugar content. They also are offering a more modern day product, which is copper lined with stainless steel. I think people don't know how to take care of the tin and end up damaging it so the companies started offering an option with stainless steel inside, but these pans are not as good with the heat transfer.
I watched another video from a toxicity expert who didn't understand that the copper pots are lined with tin, it's too bad because we should learn history to get ideas for safe products.

@@KatieJane31 I use mostly advocado oil. He notices a taste more often when I cook something like bacon or sausage in it, clean it, and cook with it again.

Enamel coated Lodge dutch ovens are made in China. There's a clue as to the safety.

    No toxic cookware
My grandma and mother were more concerned about feeding us thsn the cookware. Im 64 the cookware hasnt killed me yet.
Im pretty sure poor people dont obsess about their cookware, they are happy to have food to eat.
Talk about a first world problem, when people are in starving and first world people are obsessing about the quality cooking utensils. Shameful .

It doesn't kill, but the quality of life has gone down tremendously. So many health issues you don't need to deal with if you nurture your body better. This is not newfangled, rather going back to the old ways of cooking that were safer
