I didn’t realize it but this song was released the week I graduated high school. I do remember listening to it throughout the summer before college in 2001. Then 9/11 hit only a few weeks of freshman year college. Crazy how time flies and seeing how much this world changed. Whoever you are live your life and love the ones who always supported you no matter what.
At 36 years old this song feels the exact same, pure nostalgia...I was heading to 8th grade in NYC, same year as 9/11 attacks... A sweet pain, thinking about it now... 2024
I remember in college my professor telling the class..."in the real world bla, bla bla." I was like what the hell is he talking about? Then John says "I just found out there's no such thing as the real world, just some lies you have to rise above." Thanks John!
“In the real world bla bla bla” “Oh you mean in the forests maybe, hunting and gathering in nature?” “No, I mean the real world...the artificial construct of civilization we built over that nonsense.” “Ah...right...”

From a guitar/music student perspective, this a wonderful song for a beginner to study to start reaching for that intermediate level. Jazzy chords, tricky strumming, rhythmic hits, complex progressions...great stuff!
Please elaborate I’m at that level & would love to hear your insight, been playing for years (guitar /keyboard) I’ve learned to play some of his songs but this is one that I always have difficulty learning.
@@homerg2724 There’s generally three reasons why something is tricky to play. One is the obvious it’s fast or precise…technically hard to play. This song doesn’t really fall into that category. Next is a difficult rhythm…this song definitely has a lot going rhythmically. Syncopated strumming and hits and it goes to half time at one point. What’s most difficult about the song is the form…it has a lot of chords and if you don’t understand their function they will almost seem random. You’re in E but then it goes to Emin, then to F#7, the chorus starts on Amin, and if you don’t know the role of each chord it it’s enough to make your head spin. What I mean by chord function is the number system is I major, vi min, II maj, etc. Here in Nashville we write them with regular numbers and not Roman numerals but i digress! The chorus is A min D7 Emaj or iv bVII I. For us music school geeks( and John was certainly one of them) that’s known as a back door ii V, a cadence often seen in jazz tunes. As soon as we hear the chorus we know the flavor of the cadence and the exactly what those chords are. Every part of the song has a recognizable chord progression if you you understand theoretically what’s going on. If you don’t get the theory it will require lots of memorization on top of the tricky rhythm…making it really hard to play. I’ve been teaching over 20 years now(damn it can’t really be that long!). Let me know if you’d like to do a lesson…we could break down all the chords, analyze them etc!
Wth are you talking about? This is an extremely difficult song, way beyond intermediate. No beginner could even attempt something like this. The chord progression is very complicated and the rhythm is tricky. I bet you can't play it.
@@reesecup3ify I’m actually the wrong person to challenge. How much do you want to bet? I’d bet 100k if you’re willing…I know you won’t so I’ll send you a video anyway. We clearly have a different definition of what beginner, intermediate, etc is but I’ll admit I was probably wrong and that it’s closer to advanced. Most importantly it’s a great song for an aspiring student. I’ll still take that bet if you want.
Correct! This is one of my first songs as a beginner. To be fair, it was the strumming, palm muting, and tough chords that got me. Its not hard… but their are several gaps you need to fill. Squirrelly user is a absolutely incorrect. If you could read a tab, know basic chords, and basic strumming, this is easily attainable.
I remember being 6 years old when this song released. My brother and I shared a room and we always left the radio on at night. We were on summer vacation and would challenge each other to stay up all night. This song would come on constantly and I never become tired of it. Now it's a piece of my childhood and is full of so much nostalgia... I still love John Mayer and his music.
This is weird but I did the same thing. Fell asleep every night with the radio down on low and this song would always come on when I was little. So relaxing and brings back the best memories.
Sounds like adults tried to intimidate John with of mention of the “real world” when he was a kid. “Put down that guitar. That guitar ain’t gonna get you anywhere when you’re older... when you hit the REAL WORLD.” Turns out there’s no such thing.
Every artist will learn this if they decide to pursue what they were born with. John is one of the best and smartest artists out there. This is a beautiful song but it’s also a declaration of truth. One of my all time favorites
I’m 25 and I used to hear this song, your body is a wonderland, and daughters all the time when I was 6 years old on the radio. So glad I discovered John’s music again. So much nostalgia and even his newer music is super good too. Dude never disappoints me.
John Mayer just released Last Train Home in the past month. John Mayer is the Eric Clapton of our generation. If you listen to Last Train Home that song sounds a decade older than No such thing. John Mayer is kicking off the early 1990's reboot/retro in this decade.
So much truth in this song....please, kids, don't let your teachers, etc, limit you...the best of you is truly still up your sleeve (I say this as a 46-y/o fart!).
"they love to tell you to stay inside the lines"____ :/. I still remember when I wrote the paper. And that teacher editor said ," you never ask an adult why." Bish, what? What world do you even come from the youth can't even ask why anymore? I'd insert a why song here but I forgot it :/
2024 and let me tell you I felt like I seen my whole entire childhood hearing this again & it struck every single emotion in me glad it did because for the longest time I felt numb to a lot.
OMG...I heard this yesterday and it was like bumping into an old friend from middle school. There's nothing better than finding long forgotten songs I grew up listening to.

@@teresalockhart3929 I’m 18. This song was released in 2001. My dad is a huge John Mayer fan so he always played his then old and new songs during my entire childhood
I usually don't listen to music, but man, this guy has such an incredible voice. I've heard this song so many times in retail stores and grocery stores. Great song. Puts you in a tranquil, calm mood. haha. :)
***** haha, same here. Definitely better than KFC's. But it's really unhealthy for the body so very seldom do I eat there. They also have some really nice biscuits. I've unfortunately never been a fan of their fries though, however I know many people find them very nice.
the first time I heard this song I was driving home from work on a hot California afternoon. I was stunned. I pulled over into a denny's parking lot to finish listening. chills ran down my spine as I realized that this song I'd never heard before from some unknown-to-me artist had just broken enough of the pop-song the rules to be something new under the sun. say what you will about mayer's Asperger-like communication skills but, in this case, music plus lyrics equals genius.
How come you pulled over when you could have just kept driving and remain listening to the song? Seems totally redundant. Unless, the song was like “super duper awe inspiring” that you couldn’t bare to drive
I listened to this song alot as a kid. Now I listen to it to remember how I used to spend my summers, my first summer where I was working most of it and how carefree it was but now most people aren't as carefree anymore and I have more adult responsibilities.
@@blake_4887 That was it, exactly. I wanted to find out who the artist was so I pulled over to note the time and listen for dj identification of the artist. I couldn't drive and make notes at the same time. This was way before smart phones or radio stations publishing playlists online. Like I said, this song was different than anything I'd heard at the time. Santana's Supernatural hit me the same way.
Why do I love this song? Because as a grown ass man, i still remember the come what may fearlessness of this moment in youth. Who wasn't unformed and still discovering the best of ourselves? Who wasn't still waiting for the amazing to happen? So this is why I'm reminded of Steely Dan, Beastie boys, chaka khan and all the great songs of a faraway youth. The tunes were with me as I found the best moments. Moments I couldn't even imagine in high school but desired more than that girl in chemistry, The beauty in chorus. I knew i would show them eventually.
This song is inspiring! I still get emotional hearing it. No such thing came out my first year of college and it was also the year I became a comitted christian. Lyrics were so freeing!
They read all the books but they can't find the asnwers....Loved this song since the first time I heard it, best post 9/11 song! Really lifted people back then
It’s June of 2005, I’m a junior in high school, full of teenage angst, stressing about finals, got acne and stressing about life after high school going into my final year of high school. I don’t have a car yet, and mom is giving me a ride to school. We pull into a coffee shop parking lot, and she runs in to order some drinks. This song comes on the radio. Im in the moment, thinking about adulthood, responsibilities, life after high school and just life in general. Life is good, and I didn’t realize just how good I had it, as most kids that age don’t. It’s the last REAL and Authentic time I spend with my mom. She didn’t physically die or anything, but when you’re a dependent, things are different. So in a way that part of her is just a memory. Just like the moments of childhood. If you’re still in high school and reading this, as a 34 year old now, enjoy every moment you have. Those 4, short years go by you fast! You blink, and it’s over. Make the most of it while you have it.
I'm his age. I now have a teenager in High School. He doesn't quite fit in. Sometimes it's hard convincing him his best years are to come. I introduced him to this song, hoping it would help inspire him.

This is a beautiful song but it’s also a declaration of truth. One of my all time favorites
Specially the "I am invincible part"
Yes
Ouh, that's what it means tho 🤔
Okay 👍🏽 thanks friend
“I’d like to think the best of me is still hiding up my sleeve” ❤
Still love this song.
ugh his old songs will never get old
Am I the only one that searched "I wanna scream at the top of my lungs" in order to find this song.
I did the same thing a few years ago when i tried to find thus song.
Lmfao yes

guitarplayer203 love the profile pic. RHCP are my favorite band
2:45 hits hard.. my favorite part of the song.. it really does hit though.
I’m 25 and I used to hear this song, your body is a wonderland, and daughters all the time when I was 6 years old on the radio. So glad I discovered John’s music again. So much nostalgia and even his newer music is super good too. Dude never disappoints me.
Awesome 🔥 I’m a new fan, I heard some of his songs when I was younger also, now I’ve listened to every album by him 😳😂
John Mayer just released Last Train Home in the past month. John Mayer is the Eric Clapton of our generation. If you listen to Last Train Home that song sounds a decade older than No such thing. John Mayer is kicking off the early 1990's reboot/retro in this decade.
Same but I’m now 26😭. Time flies…
Almost 24 now. Felt the same way after rediscovering his music back in 2018
FORREAL!!!! Pure nostalgia
UA-cam is the closest thing we'll ever get to a time machine.
The best thing to come along since V.H.1.
This song plays everyday at my work, and helped me go through tough work related anxiety.
I bought this album when I was about 14 or 15 and now at 37 I can't express the accuracy of this song and others on the album like St. Patrick's Day.
Graduating in a week, i’m actually gonna perform this song at the very end of the ceremony!
It’s gonna be great!!!
how'd it go?
Good luck tell us how it goes when you get a chance
Preform?like shape it before it's formed n shit?😁
Heck yeah!
@@migraine9402 it went very well!! Some minor errors but nothing to go on about.
Overall I’m very happy with the performance!
Just a dream come true
John Mayer's best song without a doubt. The lyrics are so freakin' cool.
i agree and the lyrics in this piece speak truth
Agreed. I also love his song 'Daughters'
Deeper truth in this song that a lot of people still don't understand
This is the best John Mayer tbh. Pure honesty and humility
Agree!
John Mayer humility?
Yep. And then the fame got to his head, and he became a complete wanker.
But still very talented.
Sat an iHop diner at 6am the other morning by myself. This came on while I was eating. It was so quiet. Hadn't heard it in years.
So much truth in this song....please, kids, don't let your teachers, etc, limit you...the best of you is truly still up your sleeve (I say this as a 46-y/o fart!).
Thank you :)
"they love to tell you to stay inside the lines"____ :/. I still remember when I wrote the paper. And that teacher editor said ," you never ask an adult why." Bish, what? What world do you even come from the youth can't even ask why anymore? I'd insert a why song here but I forgot it :/
lol
Aww, are you still a good guy or are you tainted by the world? have you given up.
@@lorettalynndavis9695 oh 🤷🤔 complex question. You got me on that... I came here for the song didn't i?!
I've been looking for this song about 20 YEARS!
Holy smokes 🤯🚬
How could you not love this song it's perfect!
I always play this song whenever I visit my hometown of Fayetteville NC. 71st high school c/o 2002. I miss those days.
Hardcore rap fan here just listening to one of my favorite songs of all time John Mayer is that guy 👍🏽
Remember.. he's also really good friends with Dave Chappelle!

My fave part. Im still obsessed hahaha I dont know ...the chords??❤
Been looking for this gem for a while now. At first I asked myself "could this one be it?" then internal tears of joy were shed.
My favorite John Mayer song
I know that feeling 😂
2024 and let me tell you I felt like I seen my whole entire childhood hearing this again & it struck every single emotion in me glad it did because for the longest time I felt numb to a lot.
This is mine and my wife's favorite song.
Still his best song.

The bassist is fecken world class...great song and great drums too
"I am invincible as long as I'm alive"
Good stuff man. John Mayer is also hot af
That change up at the bridge is truly invincible!
OMG...I heard this yesterday and it was like bumping into an old friend from middle school. There's nothing better than finding long forgotten songs I grew up listening to.
This is the ultimate inspirational song when transitioning from high school/teenage years into young adulthood. All 17/18 year olds should listen. When ur older this song will bring hella memories 💯
🥲
This song came out the year I graduated from high school...brings back the thoughts and feelings about stepping into adulthood.
This is the song that made me fall in love with John Mayer. ❤
Song like these used to be played on the radio, in the stores...nostalgic.

This song makes me feel energized. Great memories of being in high school and college. ❤
I remember listening to this song when i was in elementary school and thinking how dope it would be to be in high school. Today is my high school graduation and time for sure flies. Enjoy every moment guys
You guys did graduations this year? How?
How old are you? This song is not that old, but I guess depending upon your age it might be.
Time sure does fly. Good luck with “the real world” fellow pandemic graduate. Class of 2020 will go down in history for sure.

I usually don't listen to music, but man, this guy has such an incredible voice. I've heard this song so many times in retail stores and grocery stores. Great song. Puts you in a tranquil, calm mood. haha. :)
***** mmmmmmm, Popeyes :)
***** haha, same here. Definitely better than KFC's. But it's really unhealthy for the body so very seldom do I eat there. They also have some really nice biscuits. I've unfortunately never been a fan of their fries though, however I know many people find them very nice.
***** Popeyes has better, IMO.
***** haha, :)
Jason Gafar Popeye's?
listening in 2022, part of my life is John's songs
There's no way this song has only 16 million views only. This deserves at least 500M after all these year.s
THE UNDERRATED ARTISTS ARE MY ABSOLUTE HEROES
the first time I heard this song I was driving home from work on a hot California afternoon.
He has asperger's??
@@PrestigedGamerJ I'm not sure, that's why I wrote 'Asberger's-like'. He reminds me of someone I know who has mild/moderate Asberger's.
Didn't quite understand this song until I was in college but glad I listened to it while I was in High School
this song is beautiful.. why this don't made up to a hundred million???
I am invincible as long as I'm alive
Why do I love this song? Because as a grown ass man, i still remember the come what may fearlessness of this moment in youth. Who wasn't unformed and still discovering the best of ourselves? Who wasn't still waiting for the amazing to happen? So this is why I'm reminded of Steely Dan, Beastie boys, chaka khan and all the great songs of a faraway youth. The tunes were with me as I found the best moments. Moments I couldn't even imagine in high school but desired more than that girl in chemistry, The beauty in chorus. I knew i would show them eventually.
this is my fav chill song
John Mayer is super dope 👌 🙌
Just a lie I've got to rise above. I'm invincible as long as I'm alive.
I'm dead. 💀
This song is inspiring! I still get emotional hearing it. No such thing came out my first year of college and it was also the year I became a comitted christian. Lyrics were so freeing!
Awesome !👍😎
Amen!!
Twenty years later, there is no such thing as John Mayer! He always had an unique sound!

Heard this at the airport today and brought me right back to my college years! Still sounds awesome! 20 years has passed so fast!❤
I just heard this at the doctors office it brings me back along time ago when I was younger and love this song still. ❤😊
It can
It’s June of 2005, I’m a junior in high school, full of teenage angst, stressing about finals, got acne and stressing about life after high school going into my final year of high school.
38, finally get it. Good song.
THIS SONG SHOULD HAVE MORE THAN 500MIL VIEWS WHO ELSE AGGRES
It should, But little kids prefer to listen to god's dissapointments like cardi B.
