    • @Ndogg012
      @Ndogg012 9 років тому +25

      Emperor of Cartoons In order to feel nostalgia, all you need is a memory, and something that reminds you of said memory.
      nos·tal·gia
      noun: nostalgia; plural noun: nostalgias
      a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.
      As you can see, the definition of nostalgia does not say "must be at least three or more decades ago." Nostalgia is a feeling, and emotion, and it does not matter what you think about it.

    Who would have thought back in the 70's that the meaning of this song would become so relevant, powerful and meaningful 50 years later. Joni Mitchell was a visionary back then. Counting Crows and Vanessa Carlton made justice with this cover and brought back this beautful yet tragic anthem to make the people of that generation (I was a kid back then) think of the importance of caring about our planet Earth in a society that seemed to be forgeting about such principles. And they did it beautifully, paying all respect to the original song with a modern yet classy twist, not like today's covers, which only try to get a viral, shallow moment. When a talented band covers a talented arists, there's nothing to worry about. I'm happy to have been able to be part of the generation that could enjoy this and other terrific songs on the radio.

    I will forever associate this song with when I was first hired as a probation officer. I felt like I had fallen into a shark tank; the people were so aggressive and non-accepting of me. I had no law enforcement or military background. My degree was in psychology. I was very different from my fellow probation officers. I started graduate school and that job the same week. It wasn't easy. It was 2002 and I remember when I was in my new office looking through my new cases (and so overwhelmed!) and putting some things on the shelves and then put on the radio. This song was playing. Little did I know that I would come to love that job and my coworkers would grow to respect me. I had to earn that. It was rough but I got through it. I regret ever leaving that job but I wanted to use my graduate degree ----and not in law enforcement. Gosh...how I regret that. It was the best job with the best supervisor and team of people you could ever ask for. Like the song says, "You don't know what you got until it's gone." Wish I would have been more prudent :-((

    Written by legendary Joni Mitchell, who also wrote the tome of her generation, , the meaning of her songs are deep - the same genre of generation who gave us Bob Dylan, George Harrison, John Lennon, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, James Taylor, aw the list goes on. We are not going to see the musicians of such depth and substance. For many of us growing up in the 1960s and 70s, we are indebted to them, and many of our lives were saved from self destruction. We are blessed and thankful of their soulful music for eternity.

      He was trying to say it transcended being merely a song you hear on the radio. But of course, it had already done that when Joni Mitchell originally released it in 1970. And also of course, you already knew that.

    I was listening in 1970 and I'm listening today. I have heard so many re-makes of everything I was listening to in the 60's and 70's that it really must have been a magical time to be alive. It was. Nothing will ever be like it again.
    But, this version of Joni MItchells song...is wonderful. I can re-live two era's now. Going for 3...we'll see.

    I was a kid when this song came out. I will always, ALWAYS love it. I revisited it just now, and it was the first time I had ever seen the music video. It nearly brought me to tears. The scene from 0:40-0:52 where the boy rejects the love of his grandmother hit me especially. The thing that hit even harder is that you could see that she still loved him unconditionally despite all the pain he caused her. In some ways, the fact that she loved him unconditionally made it even more painful. Despite all that pain, she still had a look of serenity on her face, as if she would forget all the pain and embrace him immediately if just came back. The boy might be ashamed of all the pain he caused her, and for this reason, stray even farther, but she is there waiting and without condemnation. This is how God loves us.

      @@richardgreenwood3355 thank you! It is open to interpretation as you indicated. I think it fits with the overall theme of interpersonal disconnect we experience in our fast paced modern world. I think the grandma and her grandson example is especially pertinent because there are so many elderly people warehoused in nursing homes with no one to visit them. I think that the elderly are among the most neglected and underappreciated in our culture. Because we live in a culture that values comfort, convenience, entertainment and a fast paced mode of living, we consequently do not value the elderly because they are typically none of those things. It's the same reason why the birthrate is so low, IMHO, because children require sacrifice, sleepless nights, etc. The way we live in our society keeps us in a perpetual adolescence and doesn't really allow us to grow up or "smell the flowers" and appreciate And find meaning in the little things in life that the elderly and children appreciate.

    i remembered listening to this track as a little kid early 2000s in the supermarket and I always liked her part "UUUUPAPAPAP". I never knew the the band's name this whole time in my life but it was always deep in my mind at times that I just could never find this track. That is till at 27 years old I was at this best buy and as if it was destined for me I heard this playing and immediately pulled out my shazam app and finally after all these years I now find myself watching the music video. It's crazy how time has past by and now I find myself remembering those times with my mom walking along the supermarket and hearing this playing. Damn those times were so sweet and simple.
