Okay. Hey hey! So I wanted to point something out about Kawai. In the very beginning when they’re doing the singing contest preparation, Kawai starts moving her mouth even before she has to start but nothing is coming out, Shouko looks and sees and thinks she has to start too, because she can’t hear that nothing is coming out her mouth, and so she starts singing. Kawai tricked her into singing so she’d look good for “going out of her way” to be and look “helpful and kind.” 😤 I hate Kawai. With a passion.
@@XBitX yup. That’s probably the worst kind of bully because it’s very hard to get them in trouble or prove they’re actually horrible unless you see it firsthand. Hence why it was so easy for her to cry and play the victim. Tho honestly, in the manga, when she cried after outing Shouya, people in her class didn’t buy it. High schoolers are less naive than elementary school kids.

Just so you know, all of his friends where bullying Shoko in a sense. They egged Shoya on or were very subtle about their bullying. If you go back and watch the beginning again, you'll notice all these things. I didn't catch them until my second time watching.
Also Shoya's friends started bullying him AFTER he got in trouble for bullying Shoko.
The manga goes even further though it is somewhat implied in the movie: notice that the teacher does *nothing* until administration gets involved and immediately outs Touya as a scapegoat

13:11 Kawai did laugh with the other kids, her kindness is fake (9:35). Only Sahara, who accepted to learn sign language, was truly sympathetic to Shoko.

yeah. also, in the music class, kawaii faked singing so that shoko would start early... I also hate the fact that kawaii pretends to be the victim and plays the 'nice girl'
If you read the manga, ueno is actually one of the best characters in the series in my opinion
And kawaii is such more of a bitxh in the manga
He was bullying then got bullied he wasnt originally getting bullied until he bullied the deaf girl
essentially he took the fall for everyone because he was the ringleader

Shouya wasn’t bullied until the discussion in the classroom about the cost of the hearing aids. Shouya’s friends sold him out and then bullied him as revenge for trying to snitch on them in return. He was basically a scapegoat. Did he do the most explicit bullying? Yes. But in my opinion, Shimada was worse. Shouya stopped after elementary. Shimada continued it all through middle school in subtle ways and the result was a dramatic and depressing change in personality for Shouya. And everyone in that group bullied Shouko. Shimada was the first to jump in. Ueno talked bad about her and Kawai too. Bullying is also witnessing it and doing nothing to stop it. They were watching him do it and laughing.
But yes, despite him messing with Shouko, she was still kind to him, erasing the bad things they wrote on his desk.

@@jusker25 yeah, but to be fair, the movie is cut a bit strangely in some parts. Like how it cuts very quickly to Shouya being in the pond after being pushed in and then he had the flashback. It confused a lot of people.

Stop caring about the Oscars. Literally, or any award event at all. Specially if you are interested in animation.
Nobody who decides who wins the Oscars best animated pictures care either. They literally just watch whatever their kids watch and don't even pay attention half the time. Disney and PIxar never deserved anything despite having good movies, they use their connections to brute force a win. Studio Ghibli? only won because of their connections to Disney regardless if their movie is good or not. It does not matter if a movie is good or not, as long as its passable to outsiders, they occasionally make stand out good movies win to keep reputation with famous movie critiques such as Wes Anderson animated movies.
The Oscars are for celebrities, rich and powerful, and people in the industry to fellate themselves.
The Martian was nominated for best comedy in golden globes just so Matt Damon shows up.
Eminem is constantly nominated a grammy so he shows up and creates a media buzz in the event.
Sorry for the long rant, but I see everyone saying their mad at Oscars, when you should ignore it all together.

They were all bulling her, in one way or another. It's always so frustrating seeing everyone not understand that the rest of the class was no better than Ishida.
And his friend started bullying him afterwards.
In the Novel even the other Characters that didn’t bully her had flaws.
Including the old teacher, shoya and shoko’s moms. The best friend and the blonde girls boyfriend.
Kids can be so brutal especially with new and strange things to them but that whole class was complicit everyone saw the bullying some even joining in and laughing along Shoya was just the one scapegoated the teacher also sucks hes even worse in the manga
i never bullied anyone but I experienced isolation like the way he perceived other people with X on their face. that's perfect representation of how I felt. i loved this movie💓

@@Senbonzakuraaaapp Yes, those parts were depicting social anxiety. It's kind of sad that he couldn't face anyone and was suicidal because he bullied when he was younger.
They all really bullied her and its really infuriating to see how subtle some of them were being especially Kawai (blond w/glasses). You missed it but Shoko only starting singing during choir because the girl next to her pretended like they were about to sing. And then she made it seem like she was nice for saying she would help her. The beginning is always so sad to watch.
I think she was just trying to count when she comes into the beat and voicing the words! In the manga Kawai doesn't come off intentionally malicious here either. Kawai genuinely thinks she's a nice person, but doesn't realize being obsessed with her 'likeable nice girl' status quo is part of the problem. It's only when her self-image is threatened, like later in the movie, that she lashes out and directly hurts others.
@@SirBrainTrain in the source material she's one of the worst ones. She does shady stuff but it's behind people backs. Whenever she's confronted she plays it off like she's innocent. In the source material everyone of the kids gets a redemption are but Kawaii never changes.
@@HaruhiDream5339 very true. It’s scary but she honestly believed she was a good person. But I think the only good moments were she’s genuine is after Shouko tried to kill her self (no matter how cringey) and when she cried about the paper cranes.

People always never see ishidas true character from the start. He wasnt the one to start the bullying it was the girls singing with shoko and in that scene you see everyone talking about how they are not gonna win the choir contest while ishida isnt part of the group thats talking. Next scene his first attempt to bully shoko by reading like her before reading he glances at ueno the person who initiated the previous convo about not winning so he can be part of the group. Then shoko asks him to be friends but ishida not understanding sign language doesnt know what she is talking about ends u being uncomfortable and throws sand at her (a bit overboard ). Next scene they talk about learning sign language and you can see ishida giving it a try but still not understanding what shoko meant before i.e. being friends. When ueno takes shokos hearing aids for the first time a group formed solely focused around that topic so ishida tried to enter that group by throwing shokos hearing aids. When the principal came to find the bully you can clearly see ishida trying to put his hands up to signify he was the bully but a bit hesitant maybe due to being scared.
Not saying ishida didnt do terrible things but he only did it to enter a particular group that only formed due to the terrible things and the true blames lies with the teacher which ignored the whole thing but when his job is at stake ends up furious at ishida who was one of the many bullies at the school.

Now I recommend watching 'I Want to Eat Your Pancreas' and 'Boku dake ga inai machi' aka (Erased). Both amazing imo .

Holy shit you had Grave of the Fireflies listed and they chose "A Silent Voice." If you're talking tears, they gave you mercy. "A Silent Voice" is still my favorite because all the topics they touch on, but "Grave of the Fireflies" is the saddest movie I have ever seen, and something I think EVERYONE needs, NEEDS, to see. (People need to see A Silent Voice too, but totally different reasons)
GoF way overrated on it's sadness factor. Definitely an opinion but silent voice is better imo.

the first part of this movie is always so frustrating to watch gdhshhs 😭 i hate hate Kawai and Ueno so much especially, their subtle bullying and complicity infuriates me so much (even more considering they always play the victim afterwards)

You got it a little mixed up. Ishida bullied Shoko with his friends, and after he threw them all under the bus, they bullied him for being a bully.

Watched this with my homes and I almost cried. It’s a great movie and one of the first anime movies I’ve watched.

I like how they foreshadow with Shoya missing Shoko's hand when she jumped into the river to retrieve her notebook. It even goes slow-motion for a moment to put emphasis on it.

I do recommend checking out the dub as well, both are great and they hired an actual deaf voice actress for the english dub so Shouko's voice is very authentic

This movie makes us wanna be a hero of Nishimiya Shoko
Underrated aspect of this story is the non-traditional home family structure. Most anime is very conservative/basic. Two Parents and MC might have a sibling or two. But Shoya lives with his Single Mother and Older sister and his sisters kid (Sho's Niece) They hint at it but Sisters BF/husband is overseas/Military but they flash him in the scene in the intro. The mom works from home so is able to watch her granddaughter while the sister works. She's (Maria) also biracial Japanese/Black(Brazilian?) just a very unique and real background for his home life imo really pulled me into the story.

Sometimes bystanders are worse than the ones doing it, they see it, they know it's wrong, but they do nothing. They play along or be quiet about it. A bully is nothing without ppeople's support.

That's a good question. Maybe not in my opinion. The kids do something terrible and will go on if no one tells them that it is wrong. In this case, shouya get his 'lessons' quite harsh that caused him not only to understand that it is bad to bully but also think that he doesn't deserve do live for causing so much trouble.
I'm not a fan of bullying and violence so paying back bullying with bullying sounds so wrong for me, especially since they're kids. Things will be different if shouya is a highschool boy that already understand what's wrong and right. The level of punishment is depend on how effective it is to make one understand that they're wrong.
