In this video I show you how to make a Forced Update Farm. These farms are faster than zero-tick farms. A 0-tick farm will cause roughly 12,000 random ticks per hour to hit the crop being exposed. That means a zero-tick farm will produce approximately 750 cactus per hour, or the small bamboo farms approximately 8,000 times per hour (as the back and forth is actually two zero-ticks). These Forced Update Farms cause roughly 36,000 random ticks per hour to the exposed crop... THREE TIMES FASTER than the 0-tick farms. That means the cactus will grow approximately 2,250 times per hour, and the bamboo will produce 12,000 drops per hour if you can harvest it that fast.

Strictly speaking with cactus, you can 0-tick once per tick by doing it on more than one side, but for sugar cane and bamboo it's definitely faster. It can also be done with a single boat over a campfire so long as the sand is offset from the campfire.
For those wanting an explanation on how this works:
The sand block gets updated and sees it's in the air and so it schedules a tile tick for 2 ticks later, at which point it creates a falling sand entity, which removes the sand block, lands, creates a new sand block, and removes the entity. This means that the block is gone for a 0-tick. When the block is gone it schedules an update for the cactus/bamboo/sugarcane to break, but by the time that the cactus/bamboo/sugarcane processes it, the sand is back in block form meaning that it shouldn't break. This causes the cactus/bamboo/sugarcane to misinterpret the scheduled tick as a growth tick which is the same basic principle that all 0-tick farms work by.
Welcome. I didn't realize you had a youtube channel. Do you want me to update the description link or leave it on the reddit?
Yes, ilmango (obviously) published a cactus video that used a lot of observers and pistons to zero-tick the same cactus enough to generate the same rates as this Forced Update / Shaky-Sand technique, but obviously this version is much simpler to build as well as not as resource heavy.
Also, did I get the pedigree right?
@@EagleEye621 I mean, I have an account but I don't have anything uploaded to it. I generally don't have the time or effort to record or edit videos, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Silicon42 cool I think on the mobile version it removes the falling sand entity for some reason bc on a boat it disappears and hopper for some reason with the hopper minecart of course

OMG!!!!!!!!! After spending nearly a month trying to figure out way my zero tick farm (mainly from Pixlriffs and the designs he made based off other Minecraft UA-camrs) never worked because the cactus and bamboo always broke off their blocks, THIS farm WORKS and I'm ecstatic. I got so frustrated I even cut my hand open but I've recovered. The farm that specifically worked for me is the cactus with the 2 pistons, the redstone block and slime block. You've earned a sub from me just for having a working cactus farm. I've built 4 of those underground and away from my location to avoid the block noise and laid a redstone path back up to the surface so I can turn it on and off at will without having to hear the piston noises.
I'm going to keep my current bamboo farm as is though: a double sided 8 block length of bamboo with three floors to it, so has 16 bamboo growing per floor where they only grow 3 levels up before observers fire the pistons below them, so with 3 floors of 16 bamboo growing that gives a total of 48 growing bamboo spots, and I have a total of 3 of these buildings together giving me a grand total of 144 bamboo growing. They're more than enough to fuel 8 furnaces I've got running for my XP farm.
I made some dedicated xp farms with this tech, and some dedicated cactus and bamboo farms you might be interested in. This will break in 1.15, but I also have some of the older zero-tick xp farms that at least right now look like they will continue to work
EagleEye621 Cool. For now the XP farm works as intended. As I write this I’m decommissioning the huge expense of cactus I had set up before. When 1.15 drops I should have enough XP levels to not worry about building tools, enchanting and repairing stuff that don’t/can’t have mending. I’ll come back to see how various Minecraft channel get around any fixes Mojang puts in so that we can still use XP farms.
Clearly Xisumavoid needs this in his XP shop.
point him to my 230,000 per hour bamboo farm with this tech... that will fuel a couple of furnaces :)
Great video, Super compact farm, love it!
Just wanted to share, not sure if someone tried and mentioned it already but it is possible to place the bamboo without going through the whole piston setup to stabilize the sand shown on 3:45. Just use an observer and dispenser to auto bonemeal the bamboo while you are placing it on the sand. I've tried it multiple times and it works! Great thing about it is that you can do the minecart-hopper/sand setup too for better collection of the broken bamboos.
Here's the setup:
1) Place observer facing the sand
2) Place dispenser directly on top of observer also facing the sand where the bamboo will be planted. Fill it with at least a stack of bonemeal, but if you time it right you won't need that much bonemeal.
3) Place solid block behind the observer to receive power
4) Place redstone dust on top of that block
5) The dispenser will start to keep trying to dispense the bonemeal at this point, so you can now place the bamboo and if you time it right, it'll bonemeal it as soon as you plant it.
Not really sure if the observer is also zero-ticking, but since the observer face is being updated by the shaky-sand it looks like it is also outputting power relatively at the same speed? Which then in turn, powers the dispenser fast enough to bonemeal the bamboo as soon as it is placed.
Placing the bamboo might take couple of tries, I've tried holding right-click for couple of seconds and not get it to grow but sometimes does. Also tried placing it once the first time and grows right away, it's a matter of timing really just keep trying. You'll know you did it right because the bamboo will shoot all the way up because of the shaky-sand + multiple bonemeal-ing.
As a bonus, you can replace the dispenser after with a piston just a block higher above it and you'll have the usual setup to break the bamboo except that it is also being powered by the shaky-sand and observer combo. Really compact setup! :) Thanks for sharing this video!
interesting trick. I will give it a try later, although it sounds slightly move complicated than just using the pistons. I also came up with another trick I will be showing in a video hopefully dropping today where you can stabilize the sand with a piston two blocks below the sand so you only need the one instead of two.
@@EagleEye621 sand can rest on torches, so you can also just place a torch below it just to stop it from falling in order to place the bamboo

@frank grimes it was a pretty fast rise given I went from this video to a 230,000 per hour bamboo farm in a week :)
Could you use a zero-tick piston that extends and retracts in a single game tick to harvest the bamboo without blocking growth?
good question... I have actually done some additional testing (in prep for an xp farm build out I am hoping to drop today), and found that you can increase the rates depending on the piston speed (although there is some general inconsistency I am still trying to work out), but it also can spike the 'messiness' with the now-harvested bamboo being flung all over the place. You can increase the rates to over 9k per hour, but the only way to collect it is with two hopper mine carts and it is really not practical to fit an extra hopper chain in there... and you can't push it all into water as the crops fly in all directions and even glitch through some blocks. Still have not given up, but right now the most practical solution is to settle for a less than optimized crop production for a simpler collection system.
Does a ravager break bamboo? If so, does it happen faster than the sword method? Just thinking if this helps. It could turn out to be superfast.

What happens when you move faster than the speed of light?
Minecraft scientists:
harness that power... check out my follow up videos including 230,000 bamboo per hour
You can place both the piston and the observer facing toward the bamboo and it causes the piston to fire much faster because the observer sends another pulse when it sees the piston
you can do that even easier by pushing the observer into facing another observer, but that actually makes it go to fast and causes a strange affect that throws the bamboo drops in all different directions making collection much harder. I placed the observers facing each other (instead of moving them into place) to get that slower pulsing speed intentionally.
Defenitly subbing

@@lucasfigueiras5812 yeah... someone else mentioned that as well... took me longer than I care to admit to figure that out :)
Who would win?
A fully enchanted diamond sword or bamboo
a creeper has entered the battlefield :p
Ur a legend for showing this
if you think this makes me a legend, you should check out my cactus (9k per hour per boat) and bamboo (230,000 per hour build) optimizations, and see what those make me :p
I really like this design, very compact and efficient. Creative too. I'm having problems integrating them both into an xp farm. How can I take the cactus/bamboo that gets in the minecart to a furnace? The boat "glitching" the sand stands in the way so I cant attach hoppers to the bottom of the minecart. Any ideas?
if you look at the few videos I posted after this, I made an optimized cactus build (9k per hour from one boat setup), a 230.000 per hour bamboo build, and a XP farm using one boat with two sand for cactus and two sand for bamboo :)
Is it works with sweet berry bushes?
no. you can't plant them on sand
Ops i forgot. Thank you 😁
Make you make a xp farm out of this for the next video?
could be. Not sure if next, but certainty worth making a compact furnace farm with this tech.
EagleEye621 ok ty
@@EagleEye621 I tried to make the hopperminecart transport the stuff that was there but I couldn't get it to work :/ a video is much appreciated :)
Hello I’m back in another video, I love these videos.
welcome back :)
This has quickly become the most popular video on this channel.
yes it has... and still climbing :)
I own a minecraft server with some friends, does anyone know if this causes lag, my server has 1 gigabyte of ram
everything causes lag, and while I have not does enough testing to give a definitive answer, it appears to be better than the traditional 0-tick farms.
EagleEye621 thanks for the reaction, i tried it and i didnt get much lag. Cool video
It shouldn't produce lag on the server maybe a huge array of those would produce client side lag
1 gigabyte of ram? I think that's a little small for a server
@@imnoki96 its fine for small servers
i cant stick a hopper to it could som1 tell me how to?!?!?!?
check out my follow up videos where I made a 9k cactus farm, 230,000 bamboo farm, and 31,500 sugar cane farm... all per hour rates
This is sooo cool!
if you think this is cool, wait until you find my 230,000 per hour bamboo farm using this tech :)
@@EagleEye621 wait what! 0_0 :D
I cannot wait to see it!
Thank u so much for showing this to me
happy to... but note that this was 1.14 java only... if you lick on the shaky-sand playlist you will see the 1.15 versions... and a 1.16 data pack to make the 1.15 versions work in 1.16 ... that 1.15 version also works in 1.13 and 1.14 ... but the 1.14 only version is the best if you are still in 1.14 ...
This helped me in skyblock in which I can't play redstone and pistons
Everyone unfortunately this was patched in a recent snapshot
Yeah, a lot of F's in the chat... but if you saw my 230,000 per hour bamboo farm, won't take long to fill up a few chests before upgrading to 1.15 :)
Still works until it's a real update!
Dang,
I was sad I just tried it, didn’t work and saw this comment
@@somerandomkidonyoutube7838 still works until 1.15 unless you are updating with each snap-shot for java 1.14
Won’t this lag servers?
If it does i am sad
less than the normal zero tick
Nice video :)
thanks... be sure to check out my follow up videos showing optimized build outs
Quick question: does the shaky sand thing still work in the latest version? Also, does the farm where bamboo cooks cactus still work?
no... this one is 1.14 only, I have a 1.15 dueling piston shaky sand... but in the most recent snapshot they broke everything... :(
How do you attach a hopper to this system?
for the bamboo, you are pushing it to the side, so you can put a hopper where it will fall. for the cactus, you either need to move the minecart hopper to the top and connect at the corner, or make sure it is pushed over a pixel so you can put a hopper below and to the side.
I tried to build that, but in my minecraft, the sand just drops itself as an item and lands in the hopper minecart :(
are you sure the boats are aligned properly? what version are you playing?
@@EagleEye621 i play in 1.8.9 vanilla. I'm sure my boats are aligned properly (i don't touch them after placing them down)
per some other comments, appears to only be java 1.14 (so far)
@@EagleEye621 ah ok, thank you :)
Does bamboo update from the base block for all future growth? Because if yes you can allow it to grow at least three high before pushing the piston. That will cause overall less blocked attempts and you can get closer to the shaky sand rates.
only that first block is updated.
I have a minehut server with my friends but minehut uses paper servers so 0 tick farms don’t work on them. Do you think that this farm would? And is the sugarcane design the same like the bamboo one but with a water source near the sand?
both work by 'tricking' the game into causing more random updates than would be normal (by a lot... normally the average per block is ~68 seconds to one random update... this design causes 36,000 per hour or 10 per second). Not sure if whatever mod the put in to block the original would also block this.
yes, but you would not need as fast a piston harvesting mechanism as you would expect ~2,250 per hour from sugar cane.
The 0-tick farms can be fixed in the paper.yml. Change fix-zero-tick-instant-grow-farms to false.
Just tried building this in 1.15.1 and the sand breaks when it drops onto the hopper minecart :/
the boat method was patched in 1.15, but if you check my most recent videos we have a new way of making shaky-sand and getting some crazy rates (6.6k bamboo per hour per plant) :)
@@EagleEye621 Thank you and I will. I'm just after the sugarcane farm atm.
@@Rebecca_2012 have a sugar cane version too, 1,800 per hour per plant, fully tilable so you can build as many slices as you want, with working on/off switch and no-replanting :)

Will this work on Bedrock Edition?
Edit: no it won’t
some other commenters reported the same thing :(
Liar.
StarKing Plays neat
EagleEye621 oh I guess Bedrock is just weird with sand
no it wont. nothing works on bedrock. healing villagers gives them random trades, redstone is weird, and you can only hold sheids in your off hand. yeah bedrock sucks
