The reason I wanted to share this story with you both for other hairdressers to understand that we all get unhappy clients at times and for clients to understand what is a realistic consultation and what to expect if you want to achieve your dream blonde hair. I also explain how I upset my audience and why they felt mislead. I hope you guys find this type of video helpful, let me know in the comments what other subjects you would like me to touch on in the future. Thanks for watching!

    let me just say - I so so appreciate your overwhelming support and sweet comments. it's so so nice to read them and since there's now more comments than in any other video i've ever made, I don't think i'll be able to reply to every single on LOL. however - on a separate note, I replied to a comment on sponsorships below. Someone said my channel was becoming more sponsored - and it's true - I have the opportunity to work with brands I didn't have when I had 100K subscribers, but Im actually curious, and I'd love all your feedback on this, so I'm posting my reply here below and I hope you'll give me your honest thoughts and feedback -
    so, I work with very few companies on a regular basis, who make awesome products. I make styling and hair videos that I, myself want to make,(never had a brand told me what to do in a video) in these videos, IF it's appropriate, I then incorporate these companies products which I would have used anyway- had I gone and bought them myself. Yes- that technically does make the video sponsored, but I'm extremely selective, and if they're good products, and products I would use myself anyways like T3 or eSalon and Monat who are the 3 companies I work with the most I don't see a problem with it.. So why not talk about them and even do giveaways? Free awesome products..It seems crazy not to. This actually puts me in a bit of a dilemma, because a prominent extension company just asked me if I wanted to do a giveaway on my channel- which I normally wouldn't hesitate to do because they're awesome extensions and it gives me a chance to give you guys free products, but if me giving away products can in any way be regarded as selling out or negative in any way, why should I do it?.. Honestly, I try to do the videos I want to make myself, teaching the skills and techniques I want to teach, and then I look at what I want to make and say- hey- for this video I need a toning shampoo- I have a relationship with ESalon who makes a great toning shampoo- do they want to sponsor the video? Is this wrong? I would use the shampoo in the video regardless but this way at least I get the products for free, maybe I can even give some away to my audience for free and sometime the brand even wants to give me a kick back on sales - this doesn't always happen, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It somehow often seems that you're not allowed to make any profit from UA-cam and people expect UA-camrs to make the videos only out of the kindness of their hearts, And don't get me wrong- if you don't LOVE making UA-cam videos, you're not gonna succeed - but hugs, kisses and positive comments also don't put bread on the table. My goal is to find very few very good companies and work with only those, companies like Redken, Monat, T3 and eSalon.. When I first started making videos if someone had told me I would eventually have the opportunity to work with these brands.. I would have to pinch myself..appreciate your feedback, hope you understand my point of view.
    Please just know, Every company / product I endorse, I truly like, whether it's a hair product, a beauty product or something completely different.

      Go for it! Do the sponsored vids. This is your paid side hustle, we all know you're not going to validate a product or service that you don't fully support just to make a buck. Your time is valuable and I HOPE you wouldn't ever work 100% of time time on youtube for free. That's sort of crazy, right? Go out there and SLAY! I say do what you want. I actually think that sponsored vids are a huge compliment to the youtuber...they chose you...they want you...to rep them. Kind of a compliment if ya ask me. You do you and be proud. There is NOTHING wrong at all with sponsored vids...even if it was 100% sponsored. I support you. :) And sorry that chic cried in your chair, I thought her hair looked AMAZING after. You seriously worked some wizardry there.

    That after photo was SO gorgeous. I'm a professional color specialist for a major hair company, and I have had situations like this happen before too. It's heartbreaking when you know you've done quality work and delivered on the expectations you set forth in the consultation, and then they're still not happy. I feel you, girl!

    Her hair was gorgeous when u finished! I went blonde and my stylist said it'll take 3 to 4 sessions I hated it but I understood. By the 3rd session I was a gorgeous blonde and didn't need a 4th bleaching process. Patience people patience. Hair dressers aren't magicians.

  • @MsGoldgirl
    @MsGoldgirl 8 років тому +83

    Maybe when a client asks for something drastic you should have her sign a release form saying that she went through the consultation and fully understands what is and what is not possible. On the release form you can fill out a part that lists what the possibilities are. That protects both of you!

    • @sarlizabeth
      @sarlizabeth 8 років тому +4

      I totally agree. When I had a bleach cocktail done (black to blonde with olaplex) I had to sign something ensuring that whatever damage happened I was aware of it. totally good idea.

      I know, but as someone who went from brunette to blond and came out with yellow (like Big Bird) hair, I would have loved to have had it spelled out clearly what they stylist thought they could and could not do. Maybe only reserve it for the big drastic changes that clients request. I wish I could get out to San Francisco and sit in your chair!!

I'd love to see how the client's hair turns out after the future sessions if you're able to. it's awful when you work in a profession where expectation is so high. I work in a hospital so I understand probably better than most. No one should be attacked at work, when we are trying to do our best for you. Think how you would feel being on the receiving end prior to throwing negative comments out there. Also remember that what you put out into the world you will get back... I truly believe that xx

  • @katwebbxo
    @katwebbxo 8 років тому +26

    That client just had unrealistic expectations. Her hair turned out beautifully. I understand the frustration of wanting instant results as my hair is very dark brown, almost black. Let's just say I've learned my lesson after years of coloring and bleaching. I think you explained the process clearly and you shouldn't take it personally when someone doesn't want to listen :) I wish I lived closer so you could help me. I want ashy, balayage hair but I'm afraid they won't be able to get rid of the brassy warm tones.

      Her voice is deeper than most youtubers, I think it's also related to how most youtubers are kinda "screaming" because their microphones appear to not be that good at picking up low volume speech. But then again some of them just appear to be screaming in order to be attention grabbing.

      Sierra Neubauer I so believe in lifting each others up! So much so that sometimes people seem to not believe me because they’re so used to girls (or people in general) putting other girls (or people) down for no reason at all that they are skeptical of people who genuinely like to be positive and lift people up! So sad that this is the case. I feel the same way sometimes - like people are putting me down. Hopefully this changes in the future- keep shining bright people!!!

    I’m so excited to find this channel. I am a very seasoned long time professional Hair Stylist. A client brought me a photo of you when you were a brunette and then gorgeous blonde. And her expectations were of course exactly that. I explained all that we know in this industry and how that was an unrealistic goal in one session. After investigation and finding you! I freaking love you! I want to put you on a constant loop in my salon, it’s everything we tell our clients and it becomes really frustrating when you think you’re on the exact same page and they are unhappy because for whatever reason they’re not listening to the words that are coming out of our mouths. Also, you are right, getting the client to “be patience” with the process is the golden client. I have been doing hair long before social media has ever been invented! It has caused such a challenge in our industry! Thanks for adding a big dose of expectation reality!

    I just found your channel yesterday and I sense you're a down to earth straight person and when you put yourself out there, you become an easy target. There are people who are hate filled, angry, judgmental and love to tear others down. It gives them a false sense of superiority. They see honesty as a vulnerability because it makes them uncomfortable due to their own inability to drop their protective walls. I can imagine the criticisms hurt but it's not about you and no matter what you say or do, there will always be haters. Just keep doing what you're doing, keep being you, you never have to apologize for that. :)

    I adore you and your videos! You have the best information on UA-cam for going blonde and taking care of you hair. I have watched like a dozen of your tutorials in the last week and you've given me courage to try and do my hair on my own. You are a great teacher and break things down so well so that a person(like myself) who knows NOTHING about hair actually LEARNS! I would loveee to have you color my hair one day.

    It takes a lot to do what you do. The fact that you guys have so much hateful comments sometimes infuriates me. The world that is becoming scares me to no end. A beautiful, talented,caring soul losing her life doing what she loved shows me that is so scary in this world now days. Whatever happens to if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all? Forget the haters and you do what you love because you love it. You seem so genuine and are very good at what you do. I have learned so much off of you tube. Life is too short to always care what people think. Keep being awesome!

      wow. before i read what ypu said i was going say the same! it is so wrong to leave such hate, who actually go and leave in details what they don't like about a person in the comment section like that? then it has nothing to do with wht the video is on. so wrong! Also about the singer. At 4: a.m i foud out she had died a few hours later, it distorted me. I can not believe has easy it is to get guns why did this happened? why do peoole listen and only care about peoole like Donad trump when there so much bad in the world? Ellebangs. I am new to your channle but i think you so on point and well advise in what you share with everyone, don't let them get to you.

      I can only think the same! The jealousy in such a comment is so transparent that it's ridiculous. It really seems that some people have a reverse type of discrimination, where they assume someone attractive must also be so full of themselves that they need to be taken down a peg. It takes a deep-down ugly to be that deliberately cruel to another human being and shows a poverty of spirit that is absolutely pitiful🙈. It makes me really happy to see that in contrast to such nastiness, there seems to be an overwhelming majority of people who appreciate and radiate inner beauty.🦄💫

    I have watched you for a couple of years now, and you always come across as honest. If I lived in Northern California I would come in and get my hair done from you, as a blonde it's hard to get people to understand I still have tones and warmth that I fight with all the time.
    I always say this, especially having gone to school for cosmetology myself. this is ART and it has to be from your heart and love...because you have SO many critics, so much misunderstanding and so many times of frustration... but in between all of that you have these moments that give you butterflies, those tingly, POW moments when something goes SO right and you see how happy you can make someone else, that make it worth it.
    Please know your videos are super appreciated and very much loved!

    Here's what I think. All of us girls can say we aren't jealous but get real , ugly girls, average, pretty and bombshells all have a secret little inner twinge of jealousy of a girl that is such a knockout as yourself. That being said and taking into mind that real pretty girls are usually stuck up, I find it absolutely amazing how sweet, kind, and genuine you are. Not to mention the amazing easy advice you have so generously shared with everyone, and for anyone to say you are anything but beautiful and sincere is a lady that just doesn't know how to deal well and gracefully with that inner twinge of jealousy. To them I say "Grow up, stop being a hurtful b......," and to you I say "Don't change a thing you are wonderful, informative and appear to have nothing but the best and honest intentions." So realize the world is made of all kinds of people and some are not very mature or who knows it may be some freckle faced teenage boy with glasses and braces making rude comments because he knows he will never be able to date someone like you! LOL Don't let the nay sayers stop what you are doing I love and appreciate it and I know plenty of other ladies do as well. (And there's all kinds of internet out there if they don't like you maybe they should just shut up and move on no one is forcing their jealous asses to watch you.)

    I've been disappointed by hair stylists so many times, but I wait until I get home to cry lol. I can't blame my hair dresser for my idealistic expectations. I also got a lob recently, but my hairstylist cut it into a bob with no texture, when I showed her pictures of Jennifer Lawrence and Rosie Huntington-Whitley's current hair. So, I waited a few days, because I thought I wasn't styling it correctly, but I went back and she fixed it. However, it still isn't what I wanted. BUT I love my stylist and to not her fault that I had high hopes. We have to be realistic and can't expect for something to look exactly as a picture on Pinterest or image we have in mind.

      I should have cried in front of the stylist I went to. She fried my hair off even after I told her I didn't want it super blonde. She also left me with a super choppy uneven cut. I had such beautiful silky, long hair and she ruined it... I just wanted a basic ombre. it didn't have to be super blonde, and I expressed that. I also didn't wanna cut my hair but she broke my hair off in the middle of my head and didn't care. still took my 120. now I have to wear my hair in a bun and pray it gets healthy and grows back.

    Once I had a client come in she brought in a picture she said I did it exactly like the picture and then she started crying in front of everyone as she was checking out at the front desk she said she wasn't sure whether she made the right decision I went home sick to my stomach I couldn't sleep. A few days later she called me apologize and told me how much she loved it and how much her husband loved it.
    .Been there it's awful I feel it's all about the client and making them happy and when they are not happy I become completely sick and I can't sleep.
    This does happen to every one in most professions doctor ,dentist, lawyer, fashion designer, auto repair,decorator the list goes on and on we are only human.
