In the body shop business, when a shop owner hires a consultant to help improve his business, the first thing they say is to get the owner's boat and/or project car out of the shop.
I like this guy ..he seems very genuine on his advice very realistic with his business issues and success 👍I’ve been flipping cars for like 4 years now and I can relate to a lot of the crap he goes through 🤪can drive you nuts

In 1998 I worked in small auto repair shop as mechanic. In Europe, Czechoslovakia. We had: One boss, Two book keepers, One high level technician to determine a problems, Six mechanics and One night security guy.
Business grows by personal relationships, once you build trust the customer does not worry as much about labor rate or whether the work is required. Trust goes along way and if it transfers to car sales that's a plus
That middle bay has a lot of space. Once u get them cars out. Clean it all out. You can do all types of things there. Window tinting, wrapping, paint correction, ceramic coating, Detailing, automatic start and alarm installation, car audio installations, etc.

I'm working on a being proficient and known for Toyota and Honda only. We will repair, rehab, sell and support these only.

Business is all about relationships. An auto repair shop is a minefield, but if you can navigate it, you will have customers for life.
I am a technician for ten years I used to work for my uncle selling and repairing cars I have all the tools thank you for this wonder ful video great inspiration for me opening my used car dealership.
It has been many years now but I found a great independent used car dealer in Marina Del Rey California that specializes in performance, luxury & classic muscle cars & they had a 3-bay service center like your own. I had a fantastic report with the owner & his partner that ran the service, in the end I bought 16 cars from them including a couple Vettes, a Trans Am, some Lincolns & a 1970 46K original mile Red Chevelle SS with 396 & a 4-speed, a terrific buy here-pay here place I loved. I blew up the motor in my '85 Vette I bought there & they gave me a fair price on a quality rebuild & even let me finance the engine & steering rack work. It can be a great business but the good honest ones are few & far between my friend, love your channel & outlook on the industry!

What do you do?... you _surround yourself with people that are great at all these individual tasks!_
I agree delegating is a good thing. If someone can do the task more efficiently, give the job to that person.
You make a great business point people tend to overlook. Having the right people on your team is important. You always need someone who is better at doing something you can do. And you need someone who is willing to do the things you don’t want to do. I can go into detail. But you explained it in the video

From where I stand, it looks like you could enlarge the physical size of your shop by at least 50% and increase volume easily. You might want to look for a larger, but nearby, location.

I'm a Used Card Dealer in Hemet, California, "Car Cats Auto Sales, LLC", for 3.5 years now and I was looking for how to increase my revenue and maybe, just maybe this might be an option. California is a difficult State to do business in because of the over regulations but I'm here and not sure if I'm going to leave, even though I've flirted with the idea. What you said about not wanting to work on cars I really get as I'm mechanically inclined but I want to sell, run my business and take care of business, not turn wrenches. I do believe in delegating and now I'm coming to terms with the fact that I must oversee my business and not try to micromanage it, and try to be the only Salesperson selling. Thanks again, CHAS.
Have you considered specializing ? such as opening a storage space, clean it out. Make it more efficient and profitable by closing a repair bay to the public. Then specialize and dedicate that bay to one service, such as rust prevention, as an example,Wool Wax. You can still maintain relationships with the public, with far fewer headaches and equal profit.
Segment idea .Why most used dealers don't sell motorcycles.
would be great to see the rebuilding of that Ford Mustang mach 1, good move on your decision regarding you keeping the auto repair shop, surely everything will turn out for the best
Heres an option for your auto repair you could add another shift maybe even go 24 hours with it you get all the easy jobs done through the night and it would be like having a security guard on staff resolving two problems at once

I love your videos man because you keep everything so real and I love your business knowledge and your common sense. I've been a car salesman for years and worked from selling high line such as BMW and all and to the cheaper brands including working for used car dealerships. And I'm one of those great nice honest ones! It's my only dream to own my own car lot like you! I don't care for kids or having a wife... My number 1 goal is to be my own boss. I have some good amount of money which I'm sure I can open a small lot with a few cars but I'm scared of making that step. I live in California and I'm very close to moving to either Vegas or San Antonio tx because I hear there's is a good business opportunities in both. I don't mind traveling to Alaska if I know I can open a business there! I can use some advice from a knowledgeable man like yourself! Thanks

The thing you like doing best is Sales and grooming future potential customers. Anything you do that does not involve closing a deal or buying correct stock.Make sure that you focus only on the main money maker...Sales...and delegate the rest.
That's a good point of view to look at the auto repair shop as part of your marketing department as well.
I want to be an entrepreneur (not in cars though) and just this real-world general business talk is very helpful food for thought!
I was one who commented on the previous video strongly advising you to close the auto repair side to the public. I now understand that it generates a lot of goodwill for both sides of your business, and the value of that good will should not be underestimated. Also, as you say the service side generates an income at times of year when the sales side is slow. However, I wonder if you will realize enough efficiency improvement from the service side by hiring a tech who would also be responsible for handling the customers. It seems to me what you really need is a heads-down tech, a good one, who will just concentrate on turning and burning on the wrenching. But you also need a service writer to handle the customers. Yes, it is another hire, but you said yourself you want to hire good people and let them do what they are good at. A good service writer will free you up a lot more than a tech who is going to have to try to do both and end up not doing either efficiently enough.

C5 Audi A6. Do what you do best, and delegate the rest. That's how I've been taught in the car business. I do $50 a hour repair work for any customer who purchase there vehicle from me. But maybe I should open my repair shop to the public. I kinda use it as a closing tool when I am selling the car haha. I have an excellent master mechanic who is ASE Certified. I can relate to the not having patient part haha.
Man I swear we run are shops almost the same but learning good pointers as well keep it up

Good to hear. Now track sales and decide as you get busy what kind of jobs you won’t get involved in and start sending those to the mechanic next door. Start offering detailing services by appointment and get that guy working full time. Try and maximize the money you generate from each bay. Maybe one can be express oil changes or window tinting. Those examples may or may not be ideal where you are but figure out how to maximize each bay! Good work!
You might mention to the complainee that brakes, tires and ball joints total about 2% of what his new car cost.

Like you said.... no cheap an good..... I’m an auto technician, we hardly ever the cheapest 🤷🏻♂️. Most mechanic shops gross 40-50% on parts. So $100 part gets sold $166-$200
7 minutes in I was like, wow! He actually took my suggestion and put it in airplane mode... then you got a call. It's all good. That was funny though.
Talk to scrappers who will take your scrap metal for free they will take your old brake drums, calipers, tail pipes fenders. Hey rent a place to put your other stuff in just a small warehouse or something then get to the Mach one when you can it will be paid for (the garage in a warehouse) and you'll have useable space to repair your own things.
Nothing drives me more crazy than going to a shop and seeing all of their own junk laying all around their shop. To the point you can’t even walk around without running into something and than my car is expected to be sitting around all of that junk I don’t think so. It just looks so unprofessional keep your junk at home or get rid of it. I know people that have a business and things are going good but they get lazy and stop doing one part and go to the part that doing the best at the time but than if that part goes bad it not that easy to go back to the part you stop doing because them customers are long gone. The bottom line can’t get lazy and it easy to do when you run your own business.
i dont work on other peoples trucks. it isnt cost effective to work on others trucks instead of mine. it is the definition of "STEPPING OVER DOLLARS TO PICK UP NICKELS". i cant charge enough to compensate for the savings in labor and parts by doing it myself. i see that in your situation, your repair shop is generating income as well as creating relationships that may lead to future sales. efficiency is a very important term in business.

I agree with what Marshall said some how you have to show that the repair shop is a separate entity from your cars sells. I had a body shop and a repair shop. It was no until I advertised my repair shop and added separate signage that I had customers coming to the repair shop. Now you are making 150,000 maybe then you will make 250,000..

@More Haters? Really! Maybe it's just me, but I started my own repair business about 2 years ago. And I remember when I was thinking about rising my shop rate. I felt bad and guilty of making my customers feel bad and was scared that they where all going to leave and held back on raising my rate. After listening to some advice online, I decided to raise my rate with a heavy heart. It turned out to be very positive and I'm very happy I did that. Now, you're right, if you just do it with a light heart, there is no reason to congratulate someone for raising their rate. It just seemed like a milestone for Craig from Flying Wheels, the way he said it anyway. Does this answer your question?
@More Haters? Really! Ok, that's where you where going. Now I can understand you, your concern are the customers. I thought you where talking about the task of raising the labor rate. I can see your point. But then why are people not able to feed their kids? I know, there is people that went through really hard times that really isn't their fault and I've done stuff for free for them. But then I see a lot of people spend there money on very unnecessary stuff, they go shopping every weekend. Or they go out every other day for lunch. Or get drunk every weekend. I can't support that, if you have enough money for all those unnecessary things, you should have enough money to have your car repaired at market value. Otherwise, any business owner would just go and get a 9 to 5 job and than not having worry about his work at night like everyone else. This is the conclusion that I've come to. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Just bought a 99 corvette FRC at Manheim this week for 5100. It has shit ton of mods!! Cam, headers, etc! Gonna try and double my investment. 👍 I have 3 corvettes right now. That’s about all I have left since I sold all my other cars lol. I’m gonna make a video showing me winning the bid at the auction. What’s the price and miles on your Vette? There are only 3 ways to grow a business. 1. Increase the number of clients 2. Increase the average transaction. 3 . Increase the frequency the average client buys from you. On another subject speak with a accountant to see if the the two sides should be separate for tax purposes, profitability/loss, or liability purposes. If they are separate determine if/how each mechanic can do work for the other. Leave the mustang up in the first spot and bring in a contractor to finish it up

I used to work at a firestone as assistant manager and service manger so I worked with the customers to give them a good job and I NEVER did things to rip off customers. Firestone was very good about that. We had lots of things to help customers. I also learned who was the good Tech and who is the bad tech many ASE Techs were not worth the paper I used to call them ASS Certified. Often finding the good mechanic is hard to do. Your right better to get a good tech and do it yourself. I wonder do you pay your techs(s) a hourly salary regardless or do you do it by the book rate? I think taking the do it faster then the book (make mistakes) is worse than paying a flat salary to your techs to do it right the first time. What do you do?
You should have one bay reserved for your own dealership cars
Having the Mustang sitting it your shop for a year and a half taking up revenue generating space is never a good idea. One detailing bay and technically 3 repair bays, that one bay could generate an additional 33% for the repair business. Unfortunately, I think everyone who has ever had a shop has had their own version of your Mustang.

lol. At the 13:15 mark, I was in the process of typing "I say clear out the Mach and bring in a guy to do your repair work exclusively through that bay". The cat wanted in and when I came back I thankfully watched the rest of the video before hitting post. I narrowly avoided being one of those guys who post bright ideas without watching the whole video. Which is good because I hate those weenies.

Recently saw a local used car dealer at a junkyard and overheard him wanting to buy cars from there. Seemed like he does it very regularly. Video on your thoughts about fixing and flipping junk cars? I feel like that's how most guys started, but would you even consider a junkyard car this far into your career or even for someone that just got their license? Seems like a waste of effort to get your license and waste of time since you should be trying to make money quickly to ensure you make ends meet, right?

Hey Craig, I’m hoping you can let me in on something. Can you let me know if it’s possible for you to sell a vehicle from your lot without having the customer sign public information sheet? It’s very annoying to get the constant communications from the vehicle warranty scam companies. These companies already know the year, make, and model. I’m wondering if this step can be eliminated.
Hey quick question if i buy a car from you would the taxes be cheaper buying this vehicle from you than buying it in Connecticut. i only ask cause a dealership in nys told me that if I bought a car from them I would not have to pay dealer something tax. Hiring people is a pain in the butt. I go through this all the time good luck on that one.

I'd fix my cars first and....offer repairs to your customers!!! Those who buy from you you promise to fix your customers cars. That builds good customers. I knew a guy who did body work but got tired of dealing with picky customers. He began buying wrecked cars and rebuilding them taking two totaled cars and then making one good one and selling it to dealers (yourself in this case)
