I'm just so impressed by this. Every sound makes sense. It's sort of strange though: at no point do I ever feel like it's trying to show off/sound good; it just kind of does, and effortlessly so; it's as if the music is just expressing itself without being aware that it sounds good. I dunno :)
3:35 has to be some of the nicest phrasing i've ever heard. I've been playing guitar 4 years now and it's all thanks to this man for giving me inspiration. He's a guitar legend.

Hi ! Actually "4:03" is not the exact time where it's happening. It's exactly at 4:05 ! it's the amazing bend which (i think) is on top of a modulation like you said, with the keyboard backing it up. I don't know, maybe it's just me but it blows my mind everytime !

He is technically the best guitarist but just doesn't feel like that much emotion in it compared to Buckethead, it sounds like something you would hear on a CD from Guitar World magazine.
Sorry you haven't been able to find emotion in this song, Hollis. Its pure beauty almost makes cry. I would agree some of his faster pieces are a bit too technical but this one just hits me every time. Anyway, I'll check out Buckethead.to see what you mean. Regards.
@@FSMusic86 He can be boring at some times when he goes full shred mode and forgets about the essence of the song. But I'm a huge fan of his and this track is a masterpiece.
@@TheRealCowlick it's not boring, if you hear the phrases in his shredded lines and not some fast jibberish. Also he is a pure intuitive improviser. He plays what suits his mood in that particular moment. And if he has the urge to shred, it's totally fine. Listen to his jazz gigs with the fellowship and their album, where they always experiment and it's like they are practicing on stage. That's a true improvisers mentality. To always experiment, test the limits and express oneself. But yeah, it's your opinion and I'm glad that you people are the minority.
@@FSMusic86 First of all. Don't minorise people's opinions on weak ears and bad understanding of music. I can think of many jazz guitarists that play fast lines like guthrie which I personally find more melodic and much more effective. Guthrie is one of my favourite guitarists. But I don't play blind when analysing his playing. He's one of the best guitarists in the world at this moment but even he isn't perfect. When I went to one of his clinics he told us that guitarists have an urge to ascend and descend over scales and patterns over the fretboard as fast as they can. I find that many of his songs on which he smokes the fretboard have very melodic lines. I also find that some particular performances of him tend to lack the musicality in some parts. If you were to slow these fast lines down you would notice ascending scales and patterns which do not provide any musical interest for the ear over the chord progression. When he does it for 5 minutes it's cool, but sometimes it gets boring and knowing how amazing, melodical, chromatical and ryhtmic his playing can be, the only reason I can think of why he's playing like that is because, like you said, he feels like it. And that's the bottom line of music. It should be expressive. He has a every to do that and I find that really cool of him. But, I a fellow listener and admirer of his work just do not like some of his playing in some songs or jams. That's it.
@@TheRealCowlick I understand what you say. But then again, these jazz guitarists also have their weak moments, exactly like Guthrie. Who doesnt ? Name me any guitarist and I can show you boring lines. But then again, why point out that fact explicitly with guthries playing, when every musician has that? That's pointless. That's like saying "guthrie gets sick sometimes" when everybody gets sick sometimes.
I've heard a lot of Guthrie's diverse playing over the years, also seen him with the Aristocrats live in Edinburgh but think this is the piece that gives the new listener a good idea to his capabilities so to speak. Truly beautiful, honest, intricate, soul massaging music that grips your thoughts and makes guitar players gasp in dis-belief, wonder and joy all at the same time. Just as you thought he'd delivered his magic music to the pinnacle he slips in something else, something more than you could ever imagine. I don't like comparisons with other players or sayings like "Guitar Gods" etc so it's fortunate that I don't need to say anything of the sort in relation to Guthrie. All we need do is just listen, relax, enjoy the vibrations that enter your soul. Did I take that too far :0) Not far enough I hear you say :0) Oh well just need some more Guthrie ringing in my lugs ;0)))))
Thanks mate. It's so easy to say nice things about GG. Think one of these G's stands for genius, in fact both as he is a mega genius :) I'd love to meet his parents to congratulate them on creating someone very special. To be honest there is no word descriptive enough for me to portray just how grateful I feel to have heard him play. He seems to have the ability to apply just the right things in the right places required to connect just the right contacts in my brainbox.
Totally. Great comment. I actually ended up in a conversation with the JamTrackCentral guys one day, after hitting up their technical support team. The guys told me that Guthrie would fly to their studio and arrive having only looked at a chord sheet of the backing tracks while on the plane. And when he sat down to record he would do a few takes totally improvised. And they said each take was entirely different and just completely brilliant.
Wow! Unbeleivable to say the least. I actually prefer his improvisations. With some players you get some impro's that just don't work, the young Jan Akkerman for example could be truly amazing one minute then bloody awful the next but Guthrie just amazes me every time. It's as if the guitar is actually a part of him, organically attached to his thoughts and ideas. Does that sound daft? :)
