- Guthrie Govan live in concert with The Fellowship's Zak Barrett for an amazing night of guitar and sax music at the venue Twenty One in Southend-on-Sea, Essex in the United Kingdom on May 15th 2022. The show was organized by Zak Dorne, the resident producer & engineer at Essex Recording Studios as well as his own Khandha Studios. Guthrie & Zak were kind enough to put on this intimate gig to support Southend-on-Sea achieving City status in the UK as well as the return of live music after Coronavirus lockdown restrictions were lifted. Many consider Guthrie Govan to be the best guitarist of all time. He is definitely one of the top guitar players in the world alive today. You can hear amazing guitar solos in this show and see how to play Guthrie's guitar solos by watching him here.

@@EssexRecordingStudios thank you for posting this video! I appreciate you
Guthrie is the GOAT. Never seen someone combine so many forms of music so seamlessly with such taste, passion, and humour. Truly awesome musician.
No doubt!
Guthrie's musicianship will be a major area of study in the far off future.
Also in the present.
Amen...........damn, that cat can play!!!
What is your best example of what it is about Guthrie’s playing that will be studied in the future?
@@marcwormjim if I have to sum it up in one word, I'd say it's his eloquence. It seems to me like Guthrie doesn't even play the guitar, he just plays music, the guitar happens to be the vessel under his command to reach certain musical expressions. He constantly keeps weaving one creative idea into another seamlessly. It's like everybody can talk, but there's only one Shakespeare who could put words together in a fashion that gave them immortal life. There are several points in this video that I could cite as examples of this eloquence of Guthrie.
@@mushfiquefahim141 It's almost as if the guitar has become an extension of his brain. He thinks it, and his hands just do it. Seamless fluidity.
Imagine dropping in for a drink randomly and stumbling across this pairing. Wonderful!
Pretty rad stuff!
I know that's right
Guthrie Govan is like that sick funky jam you hear in your head all day at work, but when you finally get home and sit down to try and play it, you realize it's physically impossible to play... if you can even remember it at all.
Hahaha, yeah, that's exactly how it is. Good one.
so it's not just me 😂😂
It’s too bad there is not more of his playing to see!
Like Rick Beato said last day on his channel, whe need more Guthrie on the medias! Genius!!!!
I saw that. Really glad I was able to capture some quality footage, and we all have to give major props to Zak Barrett
Totally- I saw that video and was amazed- can't believe I didn't know about him before. Inspiring!
01:33 Have A Talk With God (Stevie Wonder)
12:46 Watermelon Man (Herbie Hancock)
21:40 Englishman In New York (Sting)
30:03 Cantaloupe Island (Herbie Hancock)
Cheers dude! I should have put that in the description 👍
Please correct the name of the first song, I believe it's "Have A Talk With Guthrie"
@@EMPTYCUP111 lol
@@EssexRecordingStudios You still can! This video will certainly get hundreds of thousands of views, it's worth doing. 😀
@@EMPTYCUP111 verily!!
More evidence of Guthrie’s genius. He is the greatest.
It´s like sasquatch sightings
Very few people reach the playing ability to play what they are feeling. Guthrie has and its the best.
Fabulous! Zappa would have loved to have Guthrie in his band. An amazingly talented player of all styles and genres of music. Can't wait to see him play live again.
No doubt!
Agree and disagree - to talk about him as talented is like to talk about J.S. Bach or W.A. Mozart just as as talented. He as many others were/are so much more than just/only talented.
Frank would have loved him.
Like a conversation between two friends 🎸🎷
That's a great way of putting it 👍
@@EssexRecordingStudios I should add that the conversation is by two linguistic experts. Whose words have been formed over decades of conversation, reading and speaking. Mere mortals can appreciate the beautiful sound of the language, but we can't speak it so fluently! Lol
As a guitarist I'm very envious of how Zak Barrett can make a single note sound soo smooth.
Guthrie. God damn. There will never be anyone better. Seeing him back playing with the beast that is Zak Barrett was a treat we definitely didn't deserve, but did absolutely need. 🎶
Will?...Matteo Mancuso is better.
You deserve this and more.
@@davidderoux7552 He's definitely not as diverse in his forms of expression. Guthrie can play lines like Mancuso and 10 other legends including Holdsworth and Shawn Lane. No one will ever truly sound like those guys, but Guthrie is way more steeped in the vocabulary needed for every style of music, from traditional to avant garde.
@@davidderoux7552 You are a young boy that still smells of his mothers breast milk.
@@davidderoux7552lol
man, one of the things I love so much about Guthrie is his outrageous vocabulary. He hears Zak play a lick that reminds him of a Christmas song and jumps seamlessly into playing the full melody
That's a true master at work 👍
around 9:45 for anyone wondering
Wow!!!! Greasy. And wow!!
What a treat to just walk to into a pub and see something like this. Guthrie is the best guitar player alive IMO
Zak is smooth as silk! love his note choices, reminds me of Branford!
yeah, tone and phrasing... amazing
Guthrie the Grey ! Guthrie Godvan !
Just seeing him doing well and playing music makes me happy! He's the Greatest !
Haha that's great Kenny. Have you seen him live yet? Where are you watching form?
Well - he was already a wizard in the early 2000. As a passionate non musician music lover, I believe he did not change too much since his early days.
Maybe a more competent person from the Essex Recording Studios can confirm or contradict (both very welcomed by me) my humble assessment.
Guthrie the Blonde -> Guthrie the Gray -> Guthrie the White always a wizard, a true star !
29:35 The way he goes into those smooth chords at the end and then, spontaneously finishes the song with The Simpsons' "Gracie Films" outro jingle, is absolutely insane. That one moment encapsulates the absolute musical brilliance and joy in the man's playing. He can just randomly think of something and perfectly weave it into what he's doing. A whole another level.
This is muscle memory at its peak. To get thought to fingertip this fast and with perfect execution!
Man, 22:58 to 23:18 is so beautiful. Sting wasn't lying when he said his great musical hero is Bach, that section sounds like some Bach influenced counter-point. These two are amazing and I hope the new Aristocrats album has some Zak Barret playing in it.
There must be more credit for Zak at this point. He is just as genius as his counterpart. He, the saxophone player, has one major advantage: His instrument never sounds dull on a crappy recording mic. Or maybe it's the camera angle. The sax just sounds much better. I am melting away anyway listening to them. Thanks a ton!
And Guthrie, the guitar player, has several major advantage: He can play chords and rhythm, can squeeze out different sounds out of his instrument fith pickups selectors, pedals and fingers and never sounds like 90s porn music.
As a musician GG is really in a class by himself.
Guthrie may as well just dress up as Gandalf at this point. Amazing playing from them both. 👏
Yeah big shout out to Zak Barrett for a stellar performance on stage
My favorite type of concert, intimate and just pure music.
It was a very cool night. Always a better experience when you don't have to stand up and battle with a large crowd for a view of the stage
A lot of music lovers like to claim their favorite guitar slinger is the GOAT. I never step into this messy arena, partly because there has always been many very talented and inspiring contenders, in fact too many to name even just a few. But if I had to pick one myself, it would be Guthrie. The amount of sheer magic this wizard can produce, in so many styles, to me is unmatched. Long live King Guthrie !!
Guthrie is a man who has complete control over the musical language and all its nuances
He knows a thing or two about playing guitar
when guthrie govan plays the world listens
Yeah man have you had a chance to see him live yet?
Videos like this are the reason why I started learning e-guitar and why I started selling my e-guitars. Paradox.
Frank Zappa asked "Does Humor belong in music?" I think this proves that yeah it does! Thanks for posting!!
Hell yeah!
Calling Guthrie a world-class musician barely scratches the surface of his abilities. Thank you so much for this video!
Glad it brought you some joy!
Top 10 in the milky way 🤝
Let me rephrase. Calling him anything less than world-class would reflect on that person's ignorance. His technical abilities are a given and indisputable, what he does with them sets him worlds apart from the rest. (RIP Allen H. and Shawn L.)
Guthrie never ceased to amaze me. There is nobody like him. Absolutely THE best!
Seems like a lot of people agree with you! Are you a player as well?
@@EssexRecordingStudios Yes, but not even in the same universe as Guthrie!
I knew Guthrie was unstoppable at guitar but dang I didn’t he was also one of the baddest slide players on the planet. He’s truly one of a kind!
His slides have been legendary for years! He's done some sliding on a fretless before too, its just insane!
guthrie's ability to make music surpasses his technical abilities. its a joy to listen.
I'm sure he appreciates that Mike. Have you had a chance to see him live in person yet?
@@EssexRecordingStudios not yet. i wanted to go last night but my money is funny.
his techniques don't play, he does. Magical to watch. He's always going to be Guthrie.
(I think I) I know what you mean, but maybe "surpass" is not entirely the right word: Guthrie is actually perfectly able to put his extraordinary (if not stellar...) technical abiliities into the service of making inspired and „musical“ music. As there are so many technically brilliant players nowadays who just remain on that "technical" level and have a very hard time to become really musical (in the true sense of that word) players, I think Guthrie’s different quality is quite obvious here.
I can't listen to technical players. Seems they always focus on technique, and skip the musicianship. Guthrie (and Zak) are musicians 1st. Doesn't matter your taste. The music is what matters. This matters.
A true master of guitar. Can't think of anyone who has the pure amount of control over the notes they play like Guthrie. Zak is an absolute joy to listen to as well, what an experience it must of been to witness this live!
They're both awesome Essex musicians 👍👍

@@overtonesnteatime198 ...who happen to be from Essex
I'd like to throw Allen Holdsworth into the mix as well-no idea where he exactly originated from. When discussing genius nationalism and/or tribalism seems to be completely moot and without merit.
The incredible Catweazle on the guitar. 🤣 Absloutely Mind Blowing!!!
With other guitarists I feel a sense of anticipation. With Guthrie, I just relax and enjoy the ride. I am so glad to be alive
Hands down, Guthrie is the most accomplished guitar player/hero out there with a humble and simple attitude.
I'm blown just away......
Guthrie with an organ sim and a looper pedal.... it's like your fav superhero just got two new crazy superpowers....
Guthrie is surely a criminally underrated rhythm player because his lead outshines everything and everyone.
I Love see the smile of guthrie, this man is different
this is why we are on this planet
Guthrie Govan is the best of all times.
Guthrie is like on of those fantastic and misterious Tolkien's characters which is basicaly a force of nature.

I’ve never seen Guthrie play slide… of course it’s incredible
theres a concert of him in korea you can find here on youtube. On his song Ner Ner he busts out the slide. It's probably my favorite guthrie moment of all time. and that's saying a lot. go check it out.
Oh man that's just brightened my day so much. Massive Guthrie fan, but wow, Zak is amazing too. The interplay, the smiles, just glorious ❤
So glad you enjoyed it!
Congratulations. You are now Guthrie the White, I guess you unlocked your final form. Glad to see you perform.
He just hears a single one in his head before he replicates it perfectly. How is this wonderful creative imagination even humanly possible, what a player!
Is Guthrie among the top 10 guitarists of all time? IMO the answer is Yes! He is.
I mean watching this guy is a big ???? It's like you never stop discovering sounds on this beautiful instrument
Hopefully, this man is creating a morphogenetic field that will magically elevate the abilities of all guitarists around the world! 🤞
Thank you for recording this. If you wanna become a better musician, transcribe this.
The skills of improvising from Guthrie are astounding!!
Oh how I wish I would’ve been there to witness this…
*I’m not typically a fan of people recording during a performance but thank God this was recorded. If this was recorded and filmed for DVD I would buy it right now with no hesitation.
Guthrie just might be the most complete guitar player that ever touched the instrument. I really do love instrumental rock and follow the best guitar players but Guthrie, for sometime now, is my personal favourite. You feel that it really doesn't matter what you throw at him, he just nails it in the mos awesome way possible. Truly one of the greats.
Met him in PHX at rythm room ended up drinking beers with the Aristocrats at their hotel, straight surreal
Epic!
The best I’ve ever seen in person. Really just the best I’ve ever seen or heard, period.
Where did you see him perform in person?
9:53 ❤
Very good very very very very very very very very very very good
Guthrie is an absolute magician, a prodigy, whatever you want to call him. I've yet to see another guitarist who knows the instrument and all of its theory better than him. Thank you for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it Matt! There's a lot of seriously talented musicians, producers and engineers here in Essex
@@EssexRecordingStudios that's a subscribe added, I'm just "up the road in Norfolk"! 😉
Do they drive an XR3i?😀
It always amazes me how good Guthrie's comping is
I don't have to talk about Guthries single lines, because they literally speak for themselves, but good god, his comping is on some unheard-of level. And Zak Barrett, tremendous and soulful as always. Incredible complementation and musical feel. Thank you for making me both incredibly motivated and also wanting to throw my guitars out my window but hey, that's the fire, man. Thanks for the inspired and inspiring sounds!
Glad you enjoyed this John! What guitars do you play? Just need to know if we're talking big money so I can catch them outside your window 😂
@@EssexRecordingStudios I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the left hand now for 2 months, can play but fingers are weak, going for a n EMG nerve test friday and doctor next wednesday, I tune a whole octave low anyways so I dont think I got it from playing guitar only....and my wrists are straight when I play: just found some exercises in the net: DEFINitely dont want an operation at this point!!!! 場所も、年齢も、人数も、音楽も、地位も、全部含めてガスリーのやってることはギタリストとしてカッコ良すぎる。
Just the gods. The moment when at the end of the thing (29:30) Guthrie changed the chord to the major and everyone in the hall understood this and laughed with the musicians - this is priceless. Wave atmosphere. Magic music. Magic people. Thanks for sharing.

ive been waiting years for guthrie to drop another solo album!!!!!! i hope we can still hear another one from him.
How did I not know Guthrie played in my hometown ?!
I'm speechless with Guthrie's musicianship.
Yes, he's amazing, LITERALLY amazing. He never runs out of new cool and surprising things to play.
With all the not music related madness, most countries/societies/humanity had to deal with, Mr. Gowan shines like a bright light of hope. He indeed seems to be like a fusion of all the giants that came before him, and I hope he will get the attention of a much wider and bigger audience, not just musicians. The Aristocrats are great, but any band that is in need of a studio and/or live Guitar player should try to book him or at least have him on top of their wish list. As the era of 1970 - 2010 were the years of Allan H. (RIP) the 2000-20xx should be declared the years of maestro GG.
32:35 beautiful technique and lick with the whammy bar
Never heard anything like it!!!! Guthrie super amazing ❤❤❤

always makes my day
I love his Jon Mclaughlin isms.
He sometime repeats spiky lines which is a McLaughlin device all day long.
He has far more fluidity than any other guitarist I've heard.
Sounds a bit like all my fusion heroes but a perfect amalgam of them all with his own style liberally applied on top.
Top stuff.
Luv and Peace.
To anyone who doesn't think Guthrie has that Soul should definitely listen to some of this responsive Rhythm playing here , he has such a completeness about his style , the Horn playing was off the charts
Jeezus - that walking bassline at 23:23 is so in the pocket it's unreal. He's double stopping a really funky bassline - that's amazing.
What a magical recording! Thank you so much for this, I’ll treasure listening to this for the rest of my life.
I'm so glad to hear you say that! Everyone has a role to play in getting music out to the masses, including the camera guy 📸
He sounds like slide without the slide on his pinky how's that even possible unreal!
levent and taylor chilling in the back. zack is so good at fucking sax. remember when he used to teach at my school and i'd hear him jamming through the walls. makes me wish i was back in southend
Exciting to see Guthrie and Zak playing together again. They play so well off of one another. Wish they had made a few Fellowship albums!
Hey we'd record that for them in a heartbeat!

Absolutely lovely! Grateful thanks!
The really cool thing here is Guthrie is playing a jazz gig...and i applaud him 👍👍
Probably my favourite guitarist. Damn fine Sax playing too.
I read it's good to transcribe sax players solos because they are better than most guitarists and it's single line stuff you can learn.
Goddamn, Guthrie comes in sounding like horn player.
What a player!
He has always been one of a kind and tastefully melodic with any amount of facility available to him.
Amazing.
Oh bugger! I missed one of my favourite players gigging in my home town :(
There will surely be more my man!
WATERMELON MAN!
God, I hope he lives till like 100. We need a lot more of him!

Absolutely phenomenal!!!
Wow Guthrie Govan can really play! I like the top on his Charvel signature guitar
You'll have to check him out in person since you're local 🤘
This is like a modern version of the late great gypsy jazz genius Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli. Musicianship of the highest order without sacrificing musicality and soul for immense technique and theoretic knowledge.
