    To share a little, I can't remember the last time I sewed this fast and there were innumerable close calls where I almost made a mistake that was the type I'd make in the past, then catch myself, and power through the project with my experience. This dress was a real moment proving to myself how much I have learned from sewing over these years and I felt completely rewarded at the end. All that to say if you're on a sewing journey I'm cheering for you because there are great victory moments ahead ❤️❤️

    You make the dress I’ve been dying to start! It’s so pretty! A tip, if you’d like. When sewing bias tape and finishing seams, I find that attaching the tape to the back first then folding it over the front makes the final product look better, since it doesn’t have the extra line of stitches. Or hand sew the back on with very tiny invisible stitches. Hand sewing takes longer but I always like the results better, because I’m slightly inept with a machine haha.

    Nice. Looks good on you.
    Just a hint for future projects from someone that has made tiered ruffled skirts. The ruffle would have been much easier to hem before attaching it to the dress & gathering the top of it with basting stitches would have been easier than pinning all the ruffle gathers in.

    • @geneveiveharper
      @geneveiveharper 4 роки тому +4

      Future Homesteader personally, I find pinning achieves a more consistent result than gathering, especially on a large section such as a full skirt hem, and you don't have to worry about accidentally snapping your basting thread while manipulating the piece.

    • @keeganwallace5106
      @keeganwallace5106 4 роки тому +1

      I second hemming before gathering. That has saved me soooo much aggravation in the past. However, I really prefer pinning gathers to doing basting stitches - I’ve been doing that since I was making Barbie clothes because it always seemed to make the gathers more even.

    • @calc7074
      @calc7074 4 роки тому +1

      With pinning vs basting I think it depends on how loose your gathers are. For me who loves the ruffley asthetic I always do double basting stitches and scrunch almost as close as possible. For looser ruffles that edge on small pleats I do think pinning is better

      If it helps, replacing the needle for every new project keeps it sharp and more willing to pierce a fabric rather than drag it under your needle plate. • @S.Waters.
      @S.Waters. 4 роки тому +14

      @@bioeirini4551, "bias" or "on the bias" when referring to sewing/cutting fabric means the fabric is sewn/cut on an angle rather than straight across the fabric. Cutting the fabric for the front of the dress on the bias will make the fabric drape better on the body, it also allows for the fabric to stretch a little. If Wendy had ripped the front of the dress it would have ripped straight along the woven "grain" of the fabric rather than straight across to the other side seam. I hope you understand my explanation.

    Almost any cheap fabric can be made into something that does NOT look cheap. I used to make entire Victorian clothing pieces from $1 a yard fabric. You can't tell if you take the time to do what the fabric needs. One fabric needed to be interlined, so I interlined it and the skirt and bodice it looked incredible!

    I'm going to tell you until this video I did not like darts and did not see the reason for them also the way you explained things really made since and was very easy to follow .I was feeling very discouraged about sewing but this video really helped reconnect me with my love of sewing even though I'm a newbie and I've made some bad very bad creations that made me stop creating ,this video gave me hope to return to that passion I once had to create again. Thanks

    Were any preparation(s) of the fabric made before cutting ??
    1) Washing or cleaning using the method the finished garment will need.
    2) After tearing woven fabric across, access the fabric ends for straight alignment.
    If fabric length is insufficient to risk undesirable loss of length, below is a method to preserve as much as length as possible.
    Near each raw end of the length of fabric, prick a cross-grain thread. Pull on this cross-grain thread. Pull it all the way across, from selvage to selvage. This creates and marks a linear pathway to trim along. Trim along this created channel near. Do this for each raw end of your fabric length.
    3). Check for straightness:
    Fold fabric over, bringing the selvage edges of the entire length together. Inspect for complete and total evenness and smoothness. Note any deviation. Check for warp-free matching and correlation at the corners.
    If a corner is "short," correct any warping or unevenness. This is best done using a partner. If a human partner is not available, a substitute "anchor" may be improvised by placing one of the short corners under a heavy weight such as a furniture leg, or corner of a bed, or in some sort of gripping mechanism to firmly grasp (without damaging any threads!!) the opposite "short" corner.
    If using a partner, center the "short" corner between the right hand and the left hand. GENTLY pull on the fabric by leaning backward, tugging against each other -- kinda simulating a "tug-of-war." The degree of deviation of the raw fabric ends will determine the number of tugs needed.
    If the fabric is over-pulled in this process -- which can easily happen -- and a deviation is created in the opposite corners, switch to the newly created opposite "short" corners. Now tug more deliberately, stopping to recheck to assess to determine whether the raw ends are in perfect alignment.
    This is basic preparation before cutting WOVEN fabric. Pattern pieces cut from unstraightened fabric can result in uneven hemlines and various distortions in the finished garment.
    (This technique does not apply to Knitted Textiles.)

    Quick tip for darts I learned in 4-h. When you are sewing darts an inch from the end of the dart adjust your stitch length to something small like 2 this will ensure that you don't have to tie at the end

    Beautiful material turned into a lovely holiday destination-ready dress.
    Although I (personally) would prefer a slightly higher & more gathered back, this is because I am:
    1: I like a less loose fit (I'm 5"0'!) 2: An older lady & 3: I need greater coverage as both I (and my skin) age!
    Still - a beautiful result. Particularly loving the large slightly ruffled hem detail! Congrats!

    I am a sewer from the 1960s, it was common to use tracing paper with a tracing wheel to make darts. I still have my tracing wheel but I cannot find tracing paper, the few that are still around are dry and will not work. Tracing paper and a tracing wheel is the way to go, it is much easier.
