    Its too bad you are no longer making videos for FlossTube. I had very much enjoyed the few that you made. Trust you are safe and well in these challenging times.

    I have never really cared for animal cross stitch patterns. But now, after having seen that lepard that you showed, I am just amazed at how gorgeous it looks and am reconsidering doing an animal pattern. I mean that was just stunning!!! Those whiskers! **sigh**

      Thank you Liana. There are so many great flosstubers out there, I know I have trouble keeping up to date. But I hope there's room for me somewhere in flosstube land, as long as someone enjoys watching me I'm happy :)

    I learned of your video from a shoutout by Kay's Cross Stitch. She is right! You do beautiful work, but I am so impressed by you. Such a lovely lady. So many crafting skills!!! I love that you shared your love of stitching with your grandmother, too! What a wonderful bond! I wish my daughter would have your passion for needlework! Thank you so much for sharing your talent and your wonderful personality and accent! Looking forward to the next video! :)

      Thank you so much, you're so kind. And thank you for letting me know Kay shouted me out, I'm months behind on flosstube so it would have been a while before I saw it myself. I am very fortunate that Grandma introduced me to stitching and supported me so much. When I was visiting she even used to take me to her cross stitch group at the local library, until they stopped allowing non-members due to insurance issues. We visited over summer and talked about crafting. I was showing her my Instagram and she said "I rue the day I introduced you to cross stitch, as you have long surpassed me". I think she was joking... :)

    I really really enjoyed seeing all of your masterpieces. I think my favorite is ivory blush. My eyes 👀 got really big. I love hardanger. Stitching with a smile just had a HAL and I really enjoyed it. i look forward to seeing your wips and other finished pieces. Looking forward to your next video. Happy stitching.

    • @hanmayde464
      @hanmayde464  7 років тому

      Kelly Sluiter thank you Kelly! Wow, masterpieces - I'm chuffed ☺ Ivory Blush is such a beautiful piece. I feel an idiot because I didn't really show any of it close up like I meant to - I must have been getting a bit tired at that point! I didn't do the HAL as I've already got a few hardanger WIPs but enjoyed watching everyone's progress. Ivory Blush isn't actually any harder than the hall, it's just bigger. There's only wrapped bars and a smidgen of drawn thread - you could totally do it!

    I've been stitching since 1975. I have never seen any works that are as beautiful as yours are! I scared to even try linen. LOL I haven't even gotten to even weave. I commend you!

I absolutely love it, but even if you don't at least you've given it a go and can be doubly happy stitching on aida :D

    You are truly an amazing crafter. All your work is gorgeous. I love the way you made your first flosstube. You held your stitching close enough to the camera that I could see the details and I love that. You also held things up long enough for me to really see them. I also love that. I am older and it takes me a minute to really see all the things in a piece. Just love you and your stitching. I sure hope you will continue making flosstube videos because I will really enjoy seeing you and your projects as they progress. Keep stitching happy!!

      Thank you! I'm glad, I love encouraging people to try new things. What are you tempted by? Paddy makes a cameo in my second video too, although you'll have to watch closely to see him. His "help" is easier to deal with than his brother's, there's no working on anything else when Rory is around!

    • @bzmluv1

      I'm really interested in trying the hardanger, is there a small pattern that you might recommend for me to try to see if I like it? I just tried blackwork and I really love it, but you've really gotten me interested in the hardanger. You also gave me the inspiration (and courage, lol) to start on Instagram to share my cross stitch work with others that are interested. I really have no one in my social circle who is interested, it's nice to share it with someone who appreciates what you're doing! Have a great stitching day!

    Hi Hannah from Chicago USA! I watched your videos in reverse order for some reason and yes I definitely want to see everything you’ve done or are even thinking about doing! Your last piece, Solar Flare, was your incredible and looked vaguely familiar. You daid “Ro Pace” and I recognized the designer- I have a kit of hers upstairs! Then there was something else that looked familiar and the word “tesselation” just popped up before you said it. Im not a physicist, but I used to be a quilter. My personal hero is a quilter named Jinny Beyer- and she has actually written a book titled “Tesselations” where she talks about this technique and how it gives the illusion of movement to a piece! Im not suggesting you get into quilting (thats another long rabbit hole) but do take a look at her web site- Jinny Beyer. She is amazing, and so are you! Going right now to sign up for your Instagram!

    • @hanmayde464
      @hanmayde464  6 років тому

      Hi Teresa! Thank you for your comment. Be prepared for some seriously long videos if you want to see everything I still have! :D At least it will be slightly abridged, as I never took photos of the projects I gifted before joining instagram.
      I am so jealous that you are in the US and just have a Ro Pace kit somewhere upstairs! I also love Diane Herrman's work but you can only get her designs as classes and it's just too expensive to join all the required guilds and buy the chart and kit.
      As soon as I saw your comment I looked up Jinny Beyer and hunted down a copy of the book, thank you so much for the reocmmendation! I can't wait to look through it.
      I would totally get into quilting, but for the fabric stash - I don't have enough room. I took a textiles qualification at school when I was 16 and got to try quilting then, and have since done a pattern drafting course at the London College of Fashion so sewing is definitely in amongst my hobby repertoire! I am currently intrigued by foundation paper piecing and given that that works well with solids I could totally get behind a selection of Robert Kaufman Kona cottons.... but I'm being disciplined at the moment, trying to stick with one hobby!

You say "go big or go home", I usually say, "I like to punish myself" hehe. I've enjoyed your videos! I'm still catching up so not sure if you have done this, but would love for you to do a video of you stitching. Something about watching someone engrossed in their craft is very soothing. I loved your first video, I thought you were amazing, and your finishes are wonderful! Your Solar Flare is just WoW! Those DMC colours are incredible, and I love Judy Dixon's work too. I'm so glad she started her web shop. West End Embroidery is a good place in the UK for counted canvas work supplies. They used to come to some of the needlework shows, but I'm not sure which ones they go to now. Your Mira's are beautiful, and I'm looking forward to watching your next video!

    Thoroughly enjoyed your video. Wow! You have come so far your work is Amazing. You brought some childhood memories back to me as I was born and brought up close to Sheffield and used to visit Cole Brothers store regularly with my Mother. I am looking forward to following your progress now on Instagram and really look forward to seeing more of your work on your next video. I also enjoy stitching Mirabilias and attend the Mirabilia retreat in Milton Keynes every April, this is a facebook group Mirabilia retreaters and may interest you to see some of the work done by other Mirabilia enthusiasts. Well done it was a great first video.

      Carol Hendry thank you, Carol. How nice to come across another stitcher with links to Cole Brothers', so long closed ☺ I've not heard of this retreat before, and I don't live too far from MK! What's the name of the Facebook group please?

    • @carolhendry3652
      @carolhendry3652 7 років тому

      hanmayde The group is called UK Mirabilia Retreaters. Gina Miller is the organiser.
      We have a retreat each year in April and next year it will be 5th 6th 7th and 8th. It is at the Harben House Hotel in Milton Keynes. You are able to come as a day visitor or stay as many days as you wish. This will be the fourth one I have attended. There are plans next year to run another retreat in October around 28th but that is an open retreat not just Mirabilia. I am unable to attend that one as it will be our Ruby Wedding Anniversary that weekend. The cost is very reasonable although the hotel is quite basic as its a conference centre more than a hotel but we are a very friendly group and we welcome newcomers. Not sure how many spaces are available for the next one Gina could update you on that.
      There are usually around 45 of us so a nice sized group without it getting too big. I live close to Chester so its quite a way for me so usually stay Thursday evening until Sunday morning. Would be lovely to see you join us or even just join the facebook group to look at the work done there.
      Carol

      Bless you, you're such a sweetheart! When I watched it back I facepalmed over so many things, but I'm really glad I put it out there anyway and that you enjoyed it. The bookmark just cracks me up, who knew it'd be so prophetic? Paddy's helping me write this reply now and he's purring his thanks for the compliment. Mrs Milkybarkid is great! It's amazing that even though she's moved away from stitching now her influence in the community continues. I've heard a couple of people mention that part of their motivation to record flosstube videos is that their passion will live on for their family to enjoy. It never would have occurred to me, but I lost my grandad just over 2 years ago and I wish so much that I knew more about his passions for carpentry and cabinet making. Anyway, thanks for commenting, I hope to have another one up soon! I'm thinking WIP parade, there's been several requests, alongside a finish parade but that video would last for days....

I'm pretty impressed that I even finished those early ones, given how many other small projects went unfinished, but it meant a lot that those were the ones Grandma bought for me. She's an amazing lady, and has encouraged, supported and inspired many of my sister's and my interests from music to art to literature. We're so fortunate that she's still around and has been able to meet her first great-grandchild, my nephew. Grandma's are special, and I'm sure your grandchildren love you just as much!

    Your finishes are amazing. I can see why on the ones you went "I have to have these" even if they're not the sorts of things I'd pick to do. I can relate to the whole I stitched/I didn't stitch thing. I just got back into stitching, thanks to flosstube/Stitch Maynia after I pretty much didn't have a stitchy bug since 2015. Looking forward to your next video. You've got a lovely, soothing sort of manner of speaking.

      Wow, thank you! Editing the video I realised I said "I just HAD to have it" over and over, along with "I love specialty stitches" 😁 maybe they will become my mottos. Stitching social media has been such a wonderful, powerful thing and I'm really glad to hear it's helped revive your stitchy bug. Hopefully my videos will go a small way to helping maintain that momentum for you! It's really strange to hear yourself on a recording (it just sounds plain wrong, never mind soothing) but I'll try and keep it up! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment

    Beautiful work and found you on Instagram, your Grandma taught you well !!! Not a Hardinger fan but love yours ! Something Nora Corbett said something that has stuck with me, she said make a pattern your own, so don't ever be afraid to change something and its true. I also only use DMC because in Greece you cant find all these silk threads, etc..and they are expensive.
    We do have the kreniks though. So I also convert if I have too, to DMC. Thanks for a lovely video.

      Michelle Aukett thank you Michelle. Nora Corbett indeed is a clever lady! They say necessity is the mother of invention, and it's much preferable to change to DMC rather than not be able to stitch a design because you can't get silks! Glad you enjoyed the video

    • @hanmayde464
      @hanmayde464  7 років тому +1

      Thank you, Billie. There's nothing wrong with knowing what you like and sticking with it - after all, you're the one who is spending the time and effort on it so you need to enjoy it! But, personally, I'm just always wanting to learn something new. I only started changing colours in the last 18 months or so, and it took learning a little about colour theory before I felt empowered to give it a go. And I started small, sticking with really basic palettes.Then lately a small budget has meant having to get creative and make the most of what I have. In many ways that's been the push I needed. That, and realising that what's the worst that can happen - if I don't like it, I just have to rip out some stitches and try plan B!

I love all your pieces and I love that you try all different kinds of stitches and types of stitching. I love trying new stitches and doing detailed work, even though I don't have really any pieces to show for it. The American Needlepoint Guild archive pages are FULL of charts - check out the stitch of the month projects for decades worth of counted canvas SALs www.needlepoint.org/Stitch.php
      Laura J Perrin is a needlepoint designer who provides quite a few freebies laurajperindesigns.tripod.com/trellix_backup/id30.htm
      Papillon Creations do a lot of specialty stitch designs and have some freebies - I did the Byzantine Gem a while ago www.papillon-creations.com/welcome_frame.php?lang=en
      And if you don't mind working with Google Translate, Olga Maxden's blog has some gorgeous specialty stitch designs olgamaxden.blogspot.co.uk/. All of her charts ("schemes") are linked on this page olgamaxden.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/%D1%81%D1%85%D0%B5%D0%BC%D0%B0. It's a bit difficult to navigate though, so you might be better to do a google image search for Olga Maxden. I made her heart mystery SAL into a cushion for my friend's 30th birthday last year.

    Absolutely beautiful work! My goodness you are so good at specialty stitches. I have a fear for them.
    I also started Hardanger recently and have Ivory Blush in my stash as “some day” project. White work is further down the line .
    I have seen a color conversion of canvas “Solar Flare” in Arlene Cohen’s blog and the design is so stunning no matter what color. Now on to your next video!

    • @hanmayde464
      @hanmayde464  6 років тому

      Hi Saho, thanks so much for watching and commenting.
      Speciality stitches sure look intimidating, but take it steady and they turn out to be just like cross stitch only your needle goes in and out at slightly different places a few times more per stitch. Try a few out on a scrap piece of fabric where it doesn't matter if anything goes wrong :)
      Are you enjoying hardanger? If you're brave enough to cut pieces out of your fabric then specialty stitches should be no problem!
      Arlene's version of solar flare is absolutely beautiful. It's such a fantastic design and she's a fabulous needleworker

    Welcome to Flosstube!
    First of all... your video is amazing! What are you using to record? Are you using special lighting?
    Second... It's awesome that you still have your first cross stitch project. I don't mind showing the backs of my projects... even the older ones when I didn't care how my stitches looked. It's good to see how I was, and compare to how I am now and see how much I've progressed.
    Third... Your finishes are all lovely! I especially love the redhead on the swing. I love the movement of the piece. :)

      Hi Abi, thanks for the welcome!
      So disclaimer first - I'm am a total gadget lover and a bit of a perfectionist and think if you've got the gear, of course you're going to use it! So here's what I used and why. Apologies if you already know any of this stuff but it doesn't seem to be that common knowledge.
      -----------
      Camera:
      I filmed using my phone camera, but the rear facing higher res camera (I've got a Sony Xperia Z3 compact). I connected my phone to my laptop with a USB cable and used a free app that I already had set up for work to view and control my phone screen from the laptop - that's why I'm looking off to the side, to make sure the stitching is in shot. The camera sits on a tripod using a sprung smartphone holder that are really common.
      Lighting:
      Dad has a pop up light tent with 2 studio "daylight" lights for taking product photographs. So I shut the shutters to block out all natural light and used both of those lights (with diffusers over the shades) so I had constant lighting (no worrying about clouds and weather or sunset changing the lighting). Those two lights are either side of the camera shining at me (or more importantly, the stitching), then I use just a desk lamp shining on the wall behind me to get rid of my shadow on the wall.
      Camera app:
      So, the most important thing to get the colours right in your videos is to get the right white balance setting. Light sources come in a spectrum from orange to blue and you need to match your camera setting to your light source colour (also called colour temperature) to get realistic colours and that setting is called white balance - it what makes your whites look white rather than orange or blue).
      The standard android camera app doesn't allow you to control white balance. Like most camera apps, it tries to automatically pick the right white balance setting by looking at what the colour balance of the picture currently in frame is. But that means if you put something blue in front of the camera, it'll think the white balance setting is too blue and will automatically adjust the colours towards orange, and vice versa. This is why everyone has so much trouble with their videos not showing the right colours!
      To get around this you need a camera app which gives you control over white balance and lets you lock it at one setting for the whole video. I use the free Open Camera app and choose a white balance option that made the whites look as close to white as possible and lock it in. I then leave the focus and exposure on auto, so that it will automatically brighten and dim the picture when I move the stitching towards and away from the camera.
      Sound:
      I use the really inexpensive Boya lavalier mic www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MPDYGBE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 that just plugs into the headphone jack of your smartphone to get really nice sound quality.
      -----------
      Having explained all of that, I had some real technical issues using my smartphone because it's getting pretty old now so memory and battery are a huge issue. So I've splashed out on a new camera, which will change how I film a bit - assuming I get the change to actually film anything any time soon! But hopefully that explained a bit. If you'd like any more info please ask, and if you think I should do a tutorial then I can promise to try and find the time but I don't want to intimidate people with all the gear - I just happen to already have access to it.
      As I said I'm amazed I still have it, given how small it is and how long it's been. I'm with you, it shows real progress and backs aren't the be all and end all, but for beginners it's difficult to know what's important to get right and what's ok to be relaxed about so hopefully more of us showing the backs rather than being all uptight about it will help them out :)

      Thank you so much for the very detailed reply! I will have to look into the app so I can use the rear facing camera. I have a great mic already, but I definitely need better lighting. Hoping for nice weather is not working out for me. :)

      Hi Leslie! Thanks for watching and commenting. How are you enjoying flosstube? When I first discovered it I didn't understand the fuss, it was only when someone mentioned watching it whilst stitching that I realised its potential and its my frequent stitching companion :)

      Thank you Sandy, it's great to hear from a fellow flosstube newbie. I love sharing but had some huge technical difficulties that really put a cramp in it, plus finding the time has been a nightmare! How are you finding it, have you been able to keep up regular filming?
