I'm excited and looking forward to the roadtrip around northern Thailand with you Ken. In December 2018 I was on a week of guided trip to Chiang Rai, Mae Sai, Golden Triangle, Chiang Mai and Don Sao, Laos. Ken, going to local markets are the best as u see things from the perspective of the locals, plus, there's lots of hidden gems which u tend to find there. Which u won't find in the tourist trap areas.
That is one of my favorite markets in Chiang Mai. Glad you found it! The people are so lovely there, and throughout the entire city. I can't wait to come back. Hope you're having a good time even though it's very quiet. 🙂
Nothing like venturing local markets, will always find things that you don't see in your own country. The quest for the 7 eleven T shirt continue. LOL. Wow, food fiesta..stay safe happy exploring
i also like to go to local market whenever im visiting new place, especially wet market if it is located near the sea area, there u can always find a lot of fresh fish and sometimes not found in other places.
I love your videos Ken. It is many years since I travelled in Thailand and you bring Thailand to me in Liverpool UK. The food all looks so delicious. Keep enjoying and sharing with us.
We know those Pork skins as pork scratchings, sometimes known as hard or soft scratchings, the puffed up ones are known also as pork crunch. Not sure if you have tried the small bananas, but they are incredibly sweet. In Malaysia they are called pisang mas. Nice lady at the crispy pork stall.
Really enjoyable video Ken, thanks for bringing us along with you to the market. Markets are always interesting. I commend you on your excellent English. I speak a little German, but not as good as your English.
I love Thai stall vendors ,Elderly, young doesn't matter .All trying to make a hard living with a smile on their faces .Priceless ❤And you Ken trying them all ,your'e a star mate 👍
North Thailand is great! Love to see you interact withe the locals. You ask a lot and they like it. You are interrested in the culture and to learn. Go on the road trip soon :)
Interesting to follow you around that local market. It's very quiet. As always, you like to hunt for food/ snacks that you haven't tried before 👍👍 Pork crackers look yummy so is the strawberry shake. How's the pork curry? Of course it must be super delicious as it's a number one dish in Chiangmai 😂😂 Aah... instead of a thick moist roti, it turns out to be a thin crispy one. That banana vendor is very honest 👍 Thanks for the walk around, Ken.
Hey! The 1st thing you bought is "Cabp Moo" crispy Pork skin. "Gang Hang Le Moo" is a curry with pork, not necessarily crispy. Oh, nice she let you try a cheat piece before buying. That looks like some really good Gang Hang Le though. It seems the bigger the pot, the longer it's cooked, the better it is. Yeah; totally love the market tours, never been to this one. My Thai fife hasn't either!
03:20 At the store where you shot the video. Food wrapped in toasted banana leaves That's HorMok. Each package of raw materials inside is different. Mixed with curry paste and grilled. It's a mixed curry with fish, bamboo shoots. And as I told you, it's pig's brain. And the one you bought at the beginning was the crispy pork you were looking for at the end of the clip called KabMoo. It's fried pork skin and the other type you buy is pork skin with fat. It's northern food. In order to be delicious, you have to eat it with Nam Prik Noom, it will go very well together. Hang Lei curry is also one of the famous dishes of the North. And in the city of Chiang Mai around the Night Bazaar market There will be mosques and Muslim villages there. There are many halal restaurants. But most of them sell Khao Soi and Thai rice and curry, but they are halal.😁😁🙏🙏
Oh, that puffed up pork rind looks so good! 😋 Oh, and Ken, you're saying 'maak' wrong. You have to stretch out the a. :P It's said with a falling tone, and a longer 'aaaa' sound.
This pork dish and the crispy bread look interesting. The lady selling banana was very nice, she could have quietly taken the 50 bahts from you, but instead she explained and gave back to you the extra. As for your last question, yes, I like to see the local places and the actual local food and your interaction with the locals, rather than just the tourist place and the famous restaurants that tourists go to. Looking forward to your roadtrip, that would be most exciting. Is the roadtrip involving your friends from food and footprints and veggies on tour?
Hello Ken I think you were looking for what we call in the USA " Fried Pork Rinds" I like them with hot sauce. a lot of them already have spice added to them. they go great with beer. I'm still watch your blogs I 'm so busy at work I don't get a chance to comment. Glad your doing great. hope your family at home is doing the same. Until the next vlog. stay safe buddy.
Oh yes.. I've visited that market once - it's on Suthep Road on the west side of the city. Didn't find anything to eat, though.. 😁 I remember they had lots of the spiral sausages. If you walk north you will find yourself in Nimmanhaemin. The river or canal that is nearby is called the Phayom, I think. Or maybe that is the name of the area. There is another similar market about 1km north of the Chang Phueak Gate which I have been to several times. Yeah, fresh strawberries are in season around January to March - the markets are full of them at that time. Insects are, in general, halal, but they have to be hygienic insects.. 😁 I've heard of people eating grasshoppers. I think the ones at the market are silkworms - they eat them in Japan, too. Reading the title of this video, it's like you're telling tourists to avoid the market.. 😂
I have an idea, Ken. You should get some washable food containers and spoon/fork for ease of eating at markets. You can bring them back to your hotel and wash. In a sense, you'd get the environmentally conscious folks happy that you are refusing single-use plastic/containers.
Greetings from Malaysia. Have not been to Chiang Mai market for many years. Thanks to your videos that have brought memories back on Chiang Mai. Great that you engaged with local people there. If you have time, you can try to travel to Chiang Sien and enter Laos. Your videos are good. May i know what model is your action camera. Thank you
I have been there a few times 4 years ago and actually it was packed with farang😁 I think because now there aren't any is because of low tourist numbers because of covid Your video is about 1 year old so you probably already know but I think the crispy pork you were looking for is called moo krob It is boiled and after fried pork belly. Crispy pork belly
Hi Ken 👋🏻 this is interesting 👍 exploring the local authentic food , just a right place to go to the local market , awesome. Fyi insects are not halal to consume by muslim except for locusts. Anyhow we follow either one of the Sunni Islamic (mazhab i.e shafie , hambali , maliki , hanafi) which varies from one region to another 👍

Thanks for the feedback Chris. I get what you mean. It's a bit challenging these times to make adventurous vlogs in a city that is really quiet and empty due to covid. Plus i also sometimes need a few days rest without big adventures. I will start a one month roadtrip around Northern Thailand in around 2 weeks though, more adventures will come then 💪

I am not sure yet. Will stay here at least until the end of september and then we'll see. Currently no other countries in southeast Asia have open borders for tourists😅
ken same here I don't enjoy the roti or the pancake in Thailand too oily for me, and for halal food as long as its not pork and the animal wasn't tortured before butchering and the butchering was made properly its halal. (btw my own knowledge and experience from traveling most of Asia so please correct me if I'm wrong).
Brave Ken. You went where no tourists have gone before. Notice one trader did not register your mention of 'popcorn' a very common English word in metropolis Thai language. The rural grandmother selling you the 3 bananas was so naturally honest did not immediately grab all the paper bills you handed her for payment you thought was 50 baht. Instead, using her fingers carefully pick out just one 20baht bill from the several bills you handed her and reached into her apron pocket to bring out a 5 bath coin change to hand back to you. To me that was most impressive. Happy exploration, Ken.
