- Hat Yai, Southern Thailand - I am Solo In Thailand’s Dangerous South - Is Hat Yai Safe?
My own government has made a travel warning for the four most southern states in Thailand. This also includes Songkhla, in which city Hat Yai I am currently am. Is Hat Yai safe? How do the locals react to see a western traveler here? Is Thailand’s south really that dangerous? I’ve spoken with people who have been here and with people who live here before I came here and they all told me the same: Hat Yai is not more dangerous at the moment than other big cities. So, join me today in Thailand’s South here in Hat Yai, Songkhla as we explore around the city, get some Hat Yai first impressions and feel the vibe of the city. At the end of the vlog I’ll tell you if I feel safe here or not.
Have you been to Hat Yai? Let me know in the comments ⬇️

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia, currently living in Thailand, making Thailand travel vlogs. It is my goal here on this channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see much tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.
There will be almost daily uploads on this channel, during the next months from Bangkok and Thailand. I will be traveling Thailand, showing you around local places in Bangkok or try lots of different Thai food. Join the journey if you are interested in experiencing Bangkok now and Thailand 2021 from a more authentic local point of view.

When u are in Spore, give me a shout. Glad to show u around 😊
Not dangerous Ken. Frankfurt is way more dangerous. Been there, nothing but smiles.
Thats interesting. Why Frankfurt is dangerous?
The area around frankfurt train station isnt that safe at night thats true
I used to go at least once year. I mean before the covid 19.
Frankfurt is perfectly safe too. :)
Yeah Frankfrut is really a shithole i must agree on that
Had Yai is a popular destination for Malaysians looking for some ‘action’ as there are many brothels there. Also, if you want to refuse someone in a polite way you have to say ‘mai aow krap’ instead of ‘mai krap’.
Pattani, Songkhla, Narathiwat and Yala are the four provinces that are ”dangerous”. The reason why is because the people of Pattani wants to be independent like they used to be. Thailand don’t want the provinces to be independent therfore there are many bombings. Thailand blame us ppl for the bombings, but we locals know that it is the government that is doing these stuff. They want to create a bad image of Pattani so that other countries don’t want to support Pattanis independency.
But pattani is actually a really beautiful place. We have our own culture, language and our ppl are really nice. Don’t be suprised if you see food like roti and nasi ____. Our culture and language is similar to Malaysia.
Thanks for explaining 😊
Ya betul
Wot about satun? There are malays there but mostly no problems at all.
@@syedputra5955 Satun was also a part of pattani kingdom I think. Satun is pretty safe I guess. The most ”dangerous” parts are pattani, yala and narathiwat. Songkhla is a bit ”safer” tho.
Satun (Setul in Malay) was a part of Kedah, not Patani. But the whole Kedah was under Thai suzereinty then, and a lot of Thais moved and settled there. So whwn Thailand made borser agreement with the British in 1909, Satun stayed with Thailand. I think Patani had much stronger memory of political independence and cultural diffrences, hence the struggle has been much more intense there.
Yessss durian season! Smells and tastes like heaven 🤤🤤
Great intro buddy. Great vlogging. You're doing well
That foamy tea looks like what we had in Terengganu and Kelantan
we miss you Greg & Jumi. Love from msia
@@jacksonvun8475 Thank you for the love! We miss Malaysia
Sawasdee ka. The (sometimes) dangerous provinces are Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani. Hat yai which is a town in Songkhla province is a rather commercial district, border town style.
Remember, in Hatyai, you have to bargain to half the price they quote to you. From my past experience, only in this city of Hatyai, they always quote you double the price for items of clothing, shoes, leather wallet and bags, etc... However, all the food items are mostly more or less fixed in prices.
Just ignore your govt Ken, 4 south Thailand states are very safe. I felt safer here than when I was in Paris...
"Very safe" but shooting attacks and bombs weekly
@@chnbri3388 Well, no shooting attacks and bombs weekly in Hat Yai. Been living there on and off since 2017.
@@hannesrand6872 songkhla isnt affected, but yala, pattani, narathiwat is 🤦🏻♂️
@wakey wanderer yall tourists never see thai news, never hear or see things and make your mind up and assume its so safe and paradise😂 yall dont know shit what happens
@wakey wanderer your feelings doesnt make it safer than london, its literally active insurgency in south thailand, soldiers and cops killed or shot all the time, and often civilians.... but safer than london with 140 murders with 9 million people okey...
As someone who has visited many "dangerous" parts of the world, I would like to say the following:
There is no danger zone, there is dangerous politics/interest/separation! In general, Thai people are knowledgeable and peaceful people.
I saw this region with equal respect, respect and love from travelers and Buddhist/Muslim individuals.
Great video Ken always informative I’ve been to Area with my wife I found it safe and as always the locals always friendly and like you love trying the local Thai food keep up the good work. Cheers Irish Paul
Not dangerous.. for northern malaysian, we always cross over there for nice food & cheap stuff.
Love how bustling that market is!
Hat Yai and Songkhla are generally safe. The insurgents are more active in the three other southern-most provinces.
Hi hello Ken 👋 I haven’t been to Hat Yai for quite sometimes now since the pandemic, me and my family love to go there for shopping and find food 👍🏻 infact Malaysian love to go there since it’s very close by and the goods are cheap. I love the fried chicken really miss the dish. It’s very safe nothing to worry about Ken 👍🏻 enjoy your stay 👋
Thanks for this video n thanks for sharing n showing your exploration in Haadyai.
I have been it is not bad at all, the government warning has always been there its just advise. The people are friendly and nice I'm sure you saw this have fun and enjoy the place its great
Well Ken, before the pandemic, during my trips there, l could see quite a lot of Westerners. It should be safe.
FYI, it's now mango and almost durian season. Hope you will try durian again 😂😂
Yeah, those t-shirts are made of polyester, can't absorb sweat, that's why the price is lower. Cotton ones are much better.
Wonderful to know that you will be visiting the Thai Malaysian border in the next days. It will be roughly an hour from Hat Yai to Padang Besar.
Happy exploring Hat Yai and stay safe.
Loving your videos and positivity. When you eat sticky rice you need to break a small amount of rice large enough to go into your mouth with the chicken. You need to roll the rice in the palm of your hand whilst picking up your chicken, dipping in the sauce before finally adding the rice. oooh my mouth is watering. Great taste and flavour.
Thanks 😊 sounds like a great technique I should try next time 😄
Hi Ken, i am Andrew from Penang and been following your channel. I am also a mix thai and also stay in Hatyai for last 20++ years. For good authentic fried chicken, please go to Polpichai Road (otw to Mo Hatyai) and is located few shops away from 7-11, Mini Big C and Mini Lotus. The shop opens ard 5pm to 9pm and is packed with locals buying coz its truly fresh & authentic......unlike those sold at places you visited in the video (primarily city center). A motorbike taxi guy will get you there. Chok dee & stay safe😀😀
Cool, thanks for the tip 💪😊
SPOTTED : Only Farang in HatYai .....Well, the place looks pretty lively.....I agree on the part especially when you travel & try speaking in the local language even simple or basic words..... The experience is priceless....I thought the green color 7 Eleven reminds me of your Werder Bremen jersey. Your meal & drinks looks awesome. Stay safe, happy exploring.
Hehe year similar to the werder jersey 😄
@@KenAbroad Is there a chance that Werder will be relegated this season?
Gonna be a close race this year again 😅
Used to go to Hatyai every month for business. Lots of good food & it is safe in Hatyai. Just remember 2 class of prices when you are in Hatyai. Farang & local prices. Enjoy yourself.
Good to see that you're back to a place with a lot of hustle and bustle! The bun with orange filling looks so good and fluffy :) Good luck looking for the 7-eleven t-shirt!
Yeah loved that place 💪
Thanks for sharing Ken, loved it, stay safe bro👊
No worry at Hatyai, before pandemic? Full of Malaysian, Singaporean, Indonesian travel there. the food there so delicious.I visit their 3-4 times a year. Try the evening time nasi beriani at Kim Yong Market road side stall
Awesome video! Really love it. Watching ur video reminds me the time when I was living in Hatyai. So much memorable!
Many thanks Ken ! Excellent information about a great town.
Ohh i miss Thailand so much 😷 Your content presentation is very cool, just watching it made me feel like that I am already there..! Keep it up bro !! Stay safe 👍🏼👍🏼✌🏼
Great video Ken. The fried chicken meal looked really yummy . Good luck in the hunt for the 7 - 11 T shirt. 👍
Ken, go try this Thanadsri Hatyai (beef noodle) in Hatyai, many famous people ate it when they are there. Being famous as you are, you should go eat it. you will be glad that you have tried it.
Hat Yai... I've visited this place many times..Good food and shopping experience
Appreciate the video Ken. Stay safe mate
Thanks for the video, pretty cool tour of the city
Love your channel Ken. You should try to collab with Mark Wiens while you’re in Thailand 😄
We also have this warning on Swedens goverment webpage, about the South of Thailand. No encurance cover if something happends if I should go there. Keep safe.
Oh Swedish government has the same warning, interesting
Also US UK and the rest of the Europe got the same patern warning. For Thai Songkhla is totally safe, crossing road anywhere in Thailand would be more dangerous, the real issue are Yala Pattani and Narathiwas, Thais would consider not to travel there it no famouse attractions and less facitiess compare to the rest of the country, I dont know why they include Hat Yai but anyway that city is the largest metropolitan in Thailand after Bangkok n its surronding provinces . Hat Yai is over crowded with Malay tourist already.
Because this 4 region occupied by Thai until now
That's because there's still ongoing insurgency by the Malays of Southern Thailand to free their homelands from what they considered as Thai colonisation.
Dutch government says the same. It's categorised as orange (3rd highest out of 4 categories) , meaning only go there if necessary. Need a special insurance to get things compensated if something goes wrong
Thai people are so nice everywhere.
Thanks for sharing Ken.
Interesting, good videos,stay safe Ken👍
Great video Ken! By the way, the thais usually eat sticky rice with their hands. Make it into a ball and dip into sauces. You must try it with Som Tom as well!
Wonderful enjoy full-time traveling
Another wonderful Video Ken... too bad there isn’t an Smell-o-Vlog invented yet to smell the fragrance of Durian🥺. By the way we use the Pig tail for soup with dried tofu and peanut 😋
My friend Ken, have you been vaccinated? I've been vaccinated for the first time, sinovac, what did you do🙏🙏🇵🇭🇹🇭
Welcome to Hatyai town ,i m living in Hatyai, have a good time and safe travels to you.
😊🙏
Thank you 😊
Hallo, welcome to Hat Yai 🤗 Have a good time
Thank you 🤗
sticky rice and fried chicken and friend garlic is quite good. it's popular in isan.
in thai i think it is called "gai thawt, koa niao".
Dear Ken thanks for explore this boarder city of Thailand. Hope I will visit while I'll be at Kuala Lumpur
Will you down to three shouthern for next step? 2-3 day is going to celebrated raya day
Another good one!!! ^_^
bro...that fried chicken and sticky rice look delicious..
I'm jealous..
i hope you staying in south Thailand until Eid..
i would love to see how the celebration there...
Most Malaysians are in Bad mood now, not interstate travel for Eid.. Not able to be back to our hometown for the 2nd year
..
Hat Yai and Songkhla is is still kind of well known among western tourists. But the more south you go the less tourists you will see. Especially in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat are nearly no western tourists.
True. I live in Narathiwat Town and have seen less than 20 farang tourists over the last 5 years. Especially the last three years hardly any westerner has visited my hometown. There are a few farangs living here though.
Interesting! @SaddQ the one living there are probably married to a Thai?
@@KenAbroad No, they are American missionaries. Besides my wife and I, there are no mixed Thai-farang couples.
how i missed Kai tod Decha restaurant.... very nice food there..... and mostly is the crowded restaurant almost all the time...
Awesome again brother.
how cool was that lots of different stores & goods & food stalls 😻
& yeah counterfeit stuff & pirated dvd are very popular here in SEA but in these days that you can easily now stream or download whatever movies & series you like here on the internet i don't think it's still quite popular but still i can see a lot of that pirated dvd stall here in the PH sometimes what's inside of the dvd is different from the cover like for example you have this naruto anime on the cover but what's inside the dvd was an 18+ show 😹💨💨
i will never forget that experience 😹
great video for today ken
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
stay safe man
Haha lol unexpected 18+ 😄
Good for you Ken - find out for yourself. Great chicken! Question for Malaysians - do all communities (Indian, Chinese, Malay) visit South Thailand for a holiday, or is it most of interest to (Malay) Muslims? The reason I ask is I'm Sri Lankan ethnic, so wondered if I could walk around un-noticed, unlike Ken 😀 This is a useful superpower I have discovered in Asia that I don't have in my native Europe 🤣
All Malaysians visit Southern Thailand, regardless of race. Also all Southern Thai's visit Malaysia daily (non-Covid period). Its a border area. So common to see people from both countries crossing one another. However the Northern states in Malaysia are majority Malay. Same with the people of Southern Thailand, who are majority Malay.
@@alifhashim3752 thanks, great to know 😎
@@proevosham4923 actually north region in malaysia mean kedah perlis kelantan dont need passport to visit southern thailand because history. Included me.from kedah no need passport
@@yasirmansor6555 wow - that's really interesting! Thanks for sharing 👍🏾
@@proevosham4923 before Thailand exist patani narathiwat yala setul is a part of malay kingdom. That a history why we dont need border to visit this area. Malay have sibling across there. Chinese and tamil not a part of history because they dont exist that time and until now some place in southern thailand dont have chinese or tamil indian community
Nice video brother 👍👍
Have a great weekend Ken.
Have a good one too Anthony 😊
Me as a Hatyai local recommend you to try Sofeeya fried chicken, it’s the best for me. and guaranteed by Mark Weins.
Nice this video
👍👍
Hi Ken just a random question,do you want to try to speak Malay in Hat Yai? I think many people especially the Muslims will understand Malay.
Whenever I tried before people don't really understand 🤔😄
@@KenAbroad really? Because when I went there there was some people who knew Malay,I went to the Big C hyperrmarket there it has a sign saying "Selamat Datang". I was really surprised by it.
Kalau melayu mai dari yala.narathiwat patani keja hatyai mmg depa bole cakap melayu. Kalau melayu setul mmg dah xbole cakap melayu dah. Kesian melayu setul
@Ken,
You're giving wrong information in your video. In Songkla province, the ethnic Muslim Malays only constitute 30%, the rest of 70% are all Buddhists from ethnic Chinese, Tai, Mon people. Most of the shops in Hat Yai are owned by ethnic Chinese.
It is the 3 provinces of Yala, Narathiwat, Patani that are majority ethnic Malays.
Satun is majority Muslim too
Hi Ken, is it possible to put google map links in you description of the places you visit? 🙏🏻
Yum Hat Yai fried chicken! 🤤
hey ken , is it possible to catch a train from there into malaysia ..
It's safe bro... I owez travel to south Thailand.. no problem..

At Kaitod Decha, you should try the fried chicken with the yellow rice.
Hope you find your 7-11 T shirt! I would buy one for sure!!!
Take good care bro, be mindful :)
Malaysian durian nicer and tastier
Next week Thursday is Hari Raya celebration, maybe you should go more south towards Pattani, Yala & Narathiwat to feel the raya there...
Are the celebrations during the day or in the evening?
@@KenAbroad it's an all day celebration similar to Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia
@Ken Abroad..im agree with him..you should go there during "hari raya" next week
Agreed. You should go to that region to feel the Hari Raya mood. It's actually safe. Paddy Doyle had been there last month and proved it's safe.
It's not really dangerous in Hat Yai unless you visit during a major holiday. Then again the security goes up during those times. Last i was there was during new years 2019-2020 . The only thing i do not like is that the place is expensive due to the cross border travellers from malaysia and singapore (to some extent).
Yala, pattani, narathiwat is the dangerous provinces, songkhla is barely affected
Sticky rice. If you want to eat it like a local, you have to use your hands and you can really have some fun with it. Roll some into a ball and throw it in your mouth. Mix it with the other food, but don't use your knife and fork. Finger food. Sticky (glutinous) rice is the dish of the people.
Good to see you brother
Enjoy your time and stay safe
Thanks 😊
I went to Hat Yai in January,2020! Hunting for foods around the city!
Used to go to Haatyai for shopping and also the varieties of street food, but have stopped going there for the past 6 years, partly due to news on bombing incidents. Will not recommend you to try Thai durian as the durian flesh is not creamy, unlike the creamy texture of Malaysian durian. I personally do not like Thai durian although I love other Thai food.
Should also try fried chicken when you are in Sadao or Danok (near to the M’sian border)
Ken, I share you a story from a Thai man I met in Khorat during my sports. He told me that in Hat Yai, he was working as a secret police. He had to keep his eyes behind him, because there are people being killed, just because they do not share the religion of the region. Just be very careful mate. Because if something unfriendly happens to you, you might not be able to tell it to us any more.
that shop had a 7eleven shirt right behind a pizza hut shirt at the 6:23 mark
Oh yeah right 😄
Thailand is generally a safe country to visit, but it's smart to exercise caution, especially when it comes to dealing with strangers (both Thai and foreigners) and travelling alone. Assault of travellers is relatively rare in Thailand, but it does happen.
Very true! I had an incident with a couple of racist french guys a few years ago. The situation ended up with one of the french guys getting severe eye and jaw damage -- as he didn't realize I was a golden glove boxer. Just for the record, I tried to deescalate the situation on several occasions.
Miss so.much hatyai and pulut ayam
Thanks Ken. You bring joy to me. I am like you, a traveller. Seeing your videos fills a need within me of reminiscing about travelling. Keep up the good work! Thank you!
To be safe in Southern Thailand avoid hanging out near military post, checkpoints or roadblocks. Generally speaking those locations are the main target for attacks or bombing by the Malay separatist movement in Southern Thailand. But I think right now the peace negotiation between Thai Government and the separatist is ongoing and ceasefire by both military forces are being enforced. So, it should be safe. But still be cautious particularly if you are near Thai military post, checkpoints or roadblocks.
I miss hatyai!
🤗Nice video🥰nice comment🥰
nice pub hati yai post laver , just ask for diana supermarket . very friendly poeple hati yai enjoy ..

I would like to go deep south Thailand and many other places that western governments give travel advise restricting travel. Be careful because your travel insurance could be voided so having an accident or getting sick could be expensive.

If you want to try Thailand Durian, try the MonThong . But make sure the ripe one. Don't ever try the un-ripe durian. I don't know why almost durian in Thailand they sell the un-ripe durian. You can tell by the strongest smell durian to tell it ripe or not. Or just asking the seller just pick the ripe/soft durian. And don't buy durian during rainy season. Taste will be not nice too.
