Is This Thailand? Cultural Diversity In Hat Yai

- Cultural Diversity In Hat Yai - Hat Yai doesn’t really have this typical “Thailand” Vibe - Do I like that?
When you think about Thailand you mostly think about it as a Buddhist country, you think about Thai food, temples etc. But there are regions in Thailand that are different. Hat Yai is such a place. A very multicultural diverse city here in southern Thailand. The Cultural diversity in Hat Yai is huge. You can find lots of Malaysian Food, Halal Muslim Food, Chinese places and western food. Mosques, Chinese Temples and Thai temples. I usually really enjoy places with a huge cultural diversity. It is nice to see how these different cultures are mixing together here in Hat Yai. So, Hat Yai definitely gets a thumps up for me for its cultural diversity.
What do you think about cultural diversity? What’s your favorite food there Let me know in the comments ⬇️

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia, currently living in Thailand, making Thailand travel vlogs. It is my goal here on this channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see much tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.
There will be almost daily uploads on this channel, during the next months from Bangkok and Thailand. I will be traveling Thailand, showing you around local places in Bangkok or try lots of different Thai food. Join the journey if you are interested in experiencing Bangkok now and Thailand 2021 from a more authentic local point of view.

Southern Thailand was part of Malay Kingdom (Peninsular Malaysia) till the British came and break them apart (and give the 3 states/district to Thailand)
That's why they're Muslim, and still speaks Malay in the 3 Southern Thai districts
@@izzuddinfakarudin5696 That's right. But not only that, there is Chinese also, and they speak similar Mandarin and Hokkien, even though most are of Hakka ethnicity. I have been there in 2001.
@@terencelee880 yes, there are Chinese too. Once upon a time ago during the old Malay Kingdom, there was a small arab community even, and they've interbred with the locals (and migrated to Kelantan and other parts of Malaysia)
Patani Kingdom was malay kingdom before defeated by thai kingdom. All is just like northern peninsular Malaysia, only the malay languages almost less spoken because of thai kingdom policies. Hopefully all the muslim keep strong to practices Islam faith.
Helo ken, everyday i sat on the couch and enjoyed your youtube channel, feel like me doing same thing, hihi, with yur detail info, keep up the good work ken, hope covid will go away
Hi Ken, you are very Malaysian today. I keep hearing you mentioned MALAYSIA many times. A big thanks for loving our country so much. Welcome back when the borders open. "MALAYSIA suka awak" and "MALAYSIA sayang awak". Hope you can still understand what l have written above. I remembered you learned "suka" "sayang" from the locals in one of your Terangganu vlogs
Wow, wow, it's wonderful that you loved that sambal belacan mixed with your nasi goreng kampung. 6 👍👍👍👍👍👍 and 6 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟for you, Ken.
Yeah I remember what I've learned there in terrenganu 💪😄will be back one day 🇲🇾
@@KenAbroad Great !!! 💪💪🤞🤞❣️💖
Lol! Chaw C Y. You are already influence by Jetlag Warriors in giving stars. I agree with you.
👍❤️👍❤️👍🇲🇾
@@kellie88 yayaya...you are right, Kellie....already influenced by Steve lvana 😍😀😁🥰
We really like Hat Yai so far too. The diversity is a big part of it 👍
👍🏻👍🏻 i have yet to visit; so near yet so far!😅 After the Covid 😉
These days Ken is the authentic Malaysian food expert, love it 😎
We love how you can find such great coffee on the streets around Thailand. Always made fresh too!
The lady not only had a coffee (espresso) machine in the back of her car but also a coffee bean grinder there! She grounded the beans freshly for you when you ordered, which usually only happens at higher end coffee places. That’s amazing 😍😍
👍🏻👍🏻 when there's a will, there's a way! 💪🏻🦾 Love their principle!🤗
Awesome place . I went again today 😄
@@KenAbroad Cool! Ohh! She's still there?
That mosque is Masjid Jame' Songkhla. Three years ago when visiting Hatyai/Songkhla we stopped by at this mosque for our prayers.
Love this country and how people are allowed to prosper, even if it is selling coffee from their stationwagen..nice of you to show the diversity and tolerance of Thailand.
Yes, when we (muslims) visit a masjid (mosque) we usually do a short voluntary prayer in respect to the mosque. But if we are there during prayer time, we'll just pray the obligatory prayer during that specific time.
Your journeys through Thailand simply show that anywhere you go in Thailand, it is beautiful and the people are friendly 🙏
Province of songkhla used to be one of the malay state in malay peninsular, until now, south of thailand and a tip of south of myanmar still a part of malay peninsular...but siam kingdom (thai today) win the war and take over one third of malay land, songkhla in thai, but the original name is singgora which is the city of lion in english... Many place in southern thai used to be in malay but convert to thai language such as phuket-bukit(hill), koh phi-phi is pulau api-api(fire island), krabi(gheribbi), ranong (rundung), satun (setul) and many more...but malays in southern thai nowdays cant speaks malay anymore accept in a part of songkhla, pattani, yala and Narathiwat... And they prefer known as thai muslim then a malay... 4 states (Kedah, perlis, kelantan and Terengganu) of malaysia today used to be under siam control before british took over Malaya...this a little bit of history of southern thai, thats because many foreigners feel southern of Thailand more similar to Malaysia then a city of Bangkok 😊😊😊😊...
But...I don't think I am Malay. My ancestors have been here for long. Our culture is influenced from many cultures. Thai South or Malay North (I like this term) or Southern Thailand has been cosmopolitan city-state. Once It was close to Malay World and then Tai speaking World. Why? Becos of political strength and trading. However, It depends on your own historical perspective. Maybe we need to understand our history more than War history. Btw, Thai or Siam and Malay are not race. They are cultural identities.
@@vandenhuud8570 I was like wdh. What history book are they in? A British version?
Ohhh we may have to come and try the Nasi Goreng Kampung Pattaya - that was our go-to before we left Malaysia
Great that you are eating food with anchovies now. You used to hate fishy food before Malaysia 😂. Im glad Malaysia opened your taste buds!
Yeah that's right 😅
Steve's of @JetLagWorriers still not liking it, but got sambal-balachan in Dubai-UAE.. 😂😂
# Ken just have to like the durian.. 😖.. 😂🤣
@@lendmioNoai oh durian is a tough one 😄
@@KenAbroad One day when you can accept it just like me once hate it, then you will considered graduated 🎓. 😂😂
Haha, now Ken is an expert on Sambal belacan!
Nice video
Not a surprise, once you have tried Malaysian cuisine, you will tend to miss every now and then. Great that you still have the strong Malaysian food cravings.... LOL .... Meanwhile , just have to weather through the MCO 3.0 we have here..... As a matter of fact, I do make effort or trip to explore different religions site - temple / shrine / mosque / churches when I travel overseas as I love and appreciate architecture ... ..Stay safe, happy exploring...
Good job Ken for emphasizing the religious sights in Thailand without prejudice, keep it up!
Ken, South East Asia nations likes Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapura & Thailand most of it diversify, multi cultural, multi religious and multi races. 😉😊
you are realy in love with Malaysian food. That's sweet.
5:55 I heard she was answering u with malay word when u asked for nasi goreng kampung. Maybe because u looks really Malaysian 🤣
Hatyai, my only foreign holiday destination (4 days 3 nights) for the last 10 years. 4 times a year or more and even spent many Chinese new years there with my family. Thanks for bringing back some fond memory. Will be there once covid protocol is lifted.
Wonderful. I really liked Hat Yai. It has some very good places and many nice people. Thank you for sharing this. :)
Thank you so much for showing us Taj Mahal in Thailand
Wow a video on a Sunday!! Very rare sorry a bit late to the party was a bit busy! But good for you that you found some nice Malaysian food!
Hi Ken , I’m sure you miss Malaysian food and too bad that nasi lemak wasn’t available but nasi goreng kampung is a good choice too 👍🏻 surprisingly you can take the hot chilli and that’s great because you know how to appreciate sambal belacan now 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I love Hatyai..there’s so many halal restaurants and stalls. Wow I’ve never been to the Taj Mahal Mosque of Thailand really stunning 👍🏻 this must be a new attraction in Hatyai , the building and the pool looks exactly like the Taj Mahal in India , amazing 👍🏻 thanks Ken for touring around 👍🏻😊
That mosque looks stunning. It's quite similar to the Taj Mahal. Oh ya, it's the Taj Mahal of Thailand...👍👍
If P'Ken doesn't want to waste time searching for hotels I recommend these 2 hotels which are B2 and Hop inn. 2 hotels are available in almost every province. Or in major cities, these 2 hotels are clean and new, the price is about 6-700 baht (each province is not the same as the popular tourist But the price will not exceed 750-800 baht) Try it out as an option when you don't know where to stay. And if you book through the app, the price will be lower.😁😁🙏🙏
Thanks for this video n thanks for sharing your day exploration in Haadyai.
Hat yai is a place where many northern Malaysians travel to. Something like a weekend “getaway”
Your vlog getting more interesting, love the beautiful mosque and of course watching you savouring nasi goreng kampong with sambal belacan..awesome content!
Hi Ken, enjoy your vacation there. Not sure if you are aware of Veggies on Tour who is also currently in Thailand. If you meet them one day, share with us the video. I want to see you guys together.
God bless you and your family
Thank you for sharing Ken..all the best
Thank you 😊
Thanks Ken for showing the Taj mahal mosque. It’s beautiful... didn’t discover before as m’sian normally whenever visit hat yai the agenda is only shop & eat 😅😅😅. Will keep in the itinerary nx time when the border is open.
I would have loved to have prayed in that mosque - so beautiful. I did pray in some mosques in Thailand including the Ao Nang Mosque and the mosque on Koh Panyee Muslim Floating village as well as the ones in Bangkok and in Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lipe
#teamabroad Thanks for remembering to switch from fork to spoon while eating nasi goreng, Ken. Hahaha
Haha after all the comments I got about using a fork 🤣
Ken, go and try the BBQ and Hotpot combination dinner in Hat Yai at only RM40/-.
Amazing buffet restaurant with a lot of seafood, meat, noodles, salads, fresh vegetables, desserts, ice cream, etc.
Very good value for your money. I enjoyed it in December 2019. A few such buffet restaurants in Hat Yai.
Muslims prays 5 times a day normally. So when Muslims travel and then comes across a mosque, Muslims will definitely stop to pray. Small/old mosques or big/nice mosques does not matter.
I miss Hatyai. Used to drive up there. Only 2 hours from padang besar
About an hour drive from Padang Besar 😊
@@waniggy i drive slow2 singgah mkn kat klonge
Thailand also so much diversity like Malaysia too... If you going to north Thailand, you also will meet different tribes there.. I am Malaysia and I love to travel to North Thailand..

Like the hotel. Been staying in the same hotel when I am in Hat yai
don’t miss a roti restaurant in Hat Yai at Cha-Chak Forseen (nice roti, Steak, Thai tea and dessert) It’s my favorite roti restaurant.
I used to stay in red planet hotel as well every year, this hotel hot spot during sonkran.... if malaysia restaurants you can go to kelantan restaurants just walk from behind Lee Garden Hotel after you passby salama restaurants walk to that alley till the end the you can find kelantan restaurants. and for roti canai from the restaurant you eat just know walk little bit further there is another open restaurant to eat roti canai a bit cheaper.. Thanks Ken. Enjoy your Sunday evening.
Thanks! You too Anthony 😊
Nice this good video eat food vlog Thailand
Interesting
You look vibrant today
so nice to get a cup of Americano with that amount of ice on a hot day! In Germany when i want the same thing, i always have to explain, like, einen iced coffee, bitte, nein, nicht Eiskaffee, kalter Kaffee, ohne Eis, nur mit Eiswürfel, OMG. Every time!
You really know how to eat it right either Thai or Malaysia food. As i am looking like a child development 😆😆 , like you at least can eat fish 🐟 even not your favourite.
how cool is that i also admire thai people in terms of creativity as they love to customize their vehicles into something unique & cool but mostly more multifunctional for their business & everyday use✨👌🇹🇭
& in terms of cultural diversity today in Thailand thai millennials are into japanese & korean culture like in terms of foods, looks, products & stuff w/c explains why there are a lot of japanese & korean restaurants in bangkok & they also had these a lot of events before related into those things not just in bangkok but also in chiang mai w/c is fascinating 😻

Americano.. Is like Nescafe o Ice (without milk)..here in Malaysia..Just some cafe & restaurant or Starbucks they call Americano..maybe coffee is different..but the taste still same @ similar..When I still little kids ..I thought is different thing..But I realized the taste is same thing/similar ..Just maybe different brand coffee..
It is popular to visit other mosque. Is hat Yat like chiang mai?
Aha that area was the former hostel I had rented. Too bad the hostel is no longer operating. Stay safe Ken.
dont be too surprised about the Malay appearance of southern thailand :)
It was an independent malay sultanate until 1909 (just like any of the states with sultans in current peninsular malaysia) and local malay leaders and public institutions were only replaced by thai ones before world war 2.
I think your new hotel Red Planet used to be Tune Hotel (Air Asia). How I missed Hatyai 😁.
Yes Red Planet is a Thai group that took over many Tune Hotels in South East Asia. They have hotels in Indonesia, Philippines and Japan too.
fish soup porridge behind your hotel is famous for dinner.
Behind my new or old hotel? 🤔😅
@@KenAbroad behind red planet hotel
To answer your question. Yes it is normal for traveling Muslims to pray in any masjid when traveling and is actually better than just praying in your hotel room. You get to meet other Muslims and its like visiting distant relatives in a sense.
