Surviving a Burning Man Whiteout Dust Storm Like A Boss

  • Dust storms at Burning Man send n00bs scurrying back to their RV's for cover... but what they don't realize is that an RV is a terrible place to be in a dust storm! You can't turn on the air conditioning, because it just blows the dust into the RV, and so it quickly becomes a sauna. Outside in the wind it's lovely and cool, and a dust storm can be one of the most enjoyable times on the playa - AS LONG AS YOU'RE DRESSED FOR IT! The most interesting, outgoing and creative people are out dancing while you huddle and sweat - I hope this video helps you learn how to properly outfit yourself for a good time in extreme BRC weather conditions.
I'm Drew - this year will be my seventh burn, and hearing that it's going to be extra dusty I thought I'd make a quick video to share what I've learned about surviving (and having fun, and partying) in dust storms at Burning Man. I hope this helps someone.

Excellent video. Passed this along to everyone I know. Even our third-year campers have no idea what a proper whiteout looks like.

    This is great.
Eighth year on the playa and still can't new friends to understand exactly how much lung/dust protection importance is.
    Passing this along!
btw: used old ski goggles the first year but thought they were not 'hip enough.' Went back to them after two years. Also: moto-cross and ski goggles are available in sizes to fit OVER eye glasses.
    Many thanks.

Thanks Drew! I just ordered two boxes of 9211 on fleaBay and I'm going to return the neoprene ones I got (the strap on those kinda sucks, I like the 3M ones better). Nice job on sharing this vid.
Thanks!!!! See you on the playa.

This is another thing I forgot to mention... swimming goggles are AWFUL on the playa. like you said, they don't breathe at all, so they basically fog up and literally pool up with sweat!

This video rocks! I will def come visit Distrikt to thank Drew personally for teaching me how to be a Boss. ;) I found the 3M-9211 at the closest GRAINGER to me and they were able to promise me morning delivery to the store, which is good because I leave for Burning Man day after tomorrow! I just spent 5 hours trying to find 3M 9211 respirators in Vancouver and failed.
    Home Depot - NO
    Rona - NO
Both places told me a lot of people had been calling about them today, which is pretty funny. Anyone know where to find these in Vancouver?
