Surviving a Burning Man Whiteout Dust Storm Like A Boss

- Dust storms at Burning Man send n00bs scurrying back to their RV's for cover... but what they don't realize is that an RV is a terrible place to be in a dust storm! You can't turn on the air conditioning, because it just blows the dust into the RV, and so it quickly becomes a sauna. Outside in the wind it's lovely and cool, and a dust storm can be one of the most enjoyable times on the playa - AS LONG AS YOU'RE DRESSED FOR IT! The most interesting, outgoing and creative people are out dancing while you huddle and sweat - I hope this video helps you learn how to properly outfit yourself for a good time in extreme BRC weather conditions.
I'm Drew - this year will be my seventh burn, and hearing that it's going to be extra dusty I thought I'd make a quick video to share what I've learned about surviving (and having fun, and partying) in dust storms at Burning Man. I hope this helps someone.
11 years later and I still enjoy listening to the basic boss mode.
even after 6 trips to the playa, i found your video very informative & useful. straight forward, and concise. thank you.
10th Burn and love the mass of information that Burners share with each other this video is great. Thank you for making it!
Gracias Drew!
A great video - I had a great time at Burning Man '2015 and survived like a champ with your tips.

Excellent video. Passed this along to everyone I know. Even our third-year campers have no idea what a proper whiteout looks like.
Thanks Drew - great information for the newbie.
great tips brother, but i couldnt here you!! Speak up!!
Thanks dude, very helpful. Like the G.I. Joe reference too.
Thanks man, this little guide helped reinforce some of the smaller details of what I should look at packing this year!
Thanks for sharing, definitely found it useful and hope it makes my first burn awesome.
This is great.
Eighth year on the playa and still can't new friends to understand exactly how much lung/dust protection importance is.
Passing this along!
btw: used old ski goggles the first year but thought they were not 'hip enough.' Went back to them after two years. Also: moto-cross and ski goggles are available in sizes to fit OVER eye glasses.
Many thanks.
epic info! looking forward to my first year on the playa. thank you!
Thanks Drew! I just ordered two boxes of 9211 on fleaBay and I'm going to return the neoprene ones I got (the strap on those kinda sucks, I like the 3M ones better). Nice job on sharing this vid.
Thanks!!!! See you on the playa.
Hey Drew I appreciate the tips! I'm off to the hardware store tomorrow to find those dust masks - and I did share this with my camp :)
love this. gimmeee all of your tips. delightfully entertaining. :)
Awesome job!
Great video! Who would dislike this?!?
thank you amigo
This is another thing I forgot to mention... swimming goggles are AWFUL on the playa. like you said, they don't breathe at all, so they basically fog up and literally pool up with sweat!
Drew Smith Very true. It happened to me in ‘17.
thanks!
This video rocks! I will def come visit Distrikt to thank Drew personally for teaching me how to be a Boss. ;) I found the 3M-9211 at the closest GRAINGER to me and they were able to promise me morning delivery to the store, which is good because I leave for Burning Man day after tomorrow! Woo!
Shared. Thank you!
great info!
Sure enough, I googled that and found a place in Burnaby, acklands-grainger, and got myself a case! Thanks!
...except now you can't drink any water!
M. P. HA! Yep!
This is super helpful! thank you! Quick question: i got some 3M 9210 stocked up but I don't have any 9211, do I need to go out and buy the 9211 or I can just take 9210 and it'll do?
You forgot about how to get the straw in there so you can still drink gin.
yea you can just go in your house take it all off once your done put back on
then go outside i hope that helped :)
I like how the length of the video is 8:12 :)
Florp: google for 'industrial safety supply Vancouver', you'll find them. :)
I just spent 5 hours trying to find 3M 9211 respirators in Vancouver and failed.
Home Depot - NO
Rona - NO
Both places told me a lot of people had been calling about them today, which is pretty funny. Anyone know where to find these in Vancouver?
That sounds like an alpaca in the background. what is that?
you can buy them on Amazon :)
Shemagh or Keffiyeh. Search Amazon for 'shemagh tactical scarf'
of all the things I forgot to mention, this is probably the biggest. :)
(I got mine from uline.ca - they arrived three days after I placed the order. :)
Does anyone know how to spell the type of Scarf he is talking about, trying to find one online, no idea how to spell it ha.
so what's the secret?
Dude, 3M should be giving you a cut for this video. I've watched around 50 of those dusts masks sell in the past hour due to this video alone.
they were talking loudly in korean the whole time...
I included a link to your awesome video in my post, "Protecting your ears, nose and throat on the playa." survivingburningman.com/2017/12/29/ears-nose-and-throat-care/

I learned something new, thanks Drew.
