I have to agree, don't worry about putting the cables in an order. I was doing a small job, started out with 6 or 8 jacks. Got the job done and was told, oh, we need to have some more jacks on this wall, which was in between other jacks already installed. So much for keeping everything in order. Install everything, plug in the LED light and label it. Love your videos, keep up the good work.

I enjoy your videos and really like seeing people going about the job. I am jealous though you can find ways to negotiate your way for labeling...
Where I am from seems like many clients(lets say like 95% of them) are adamant about having their own half-cocked labeling system that would make your brain fry. Trying to tell them to just put the patch panel number and port on the jack is like we murdered their one and only child. The philosophy we employ is to put ONLY enough info needed to locate it on the patch panel.
    Long Story:
I recall a facility that we were sub-contracted to just locate and label some WAPs they were swapping out for new ones. Well, they changed the label format on us 3 times WHILE we were doing it, making us go BACK to the first ones we did and redo them 2 separate times... The first iteration didn't even have the patch panel or the port number of the patch panel so you couldn't find it with that label, we had to indicate that it would be a good idea to have that in there. We couldn't negotiate removing more things on that label sadly... The final label looked something like this, but I think there was even more info it is long enough I can't remember everything: floor number: section department: IDF: device: Patch Panel: Patch Panel Port: Switch: Switch Port on the label on the WAP. The label was about 4 inches long with so much redundant and useless information on it that even the person who was with us trying to track it on a spreadsheet was pretty much ready to cry. Floor number was pointless cause you would know the floor by virtue of needing to be on the floor the WAP was on to stare at it... Section Department, you would know... Your in that department looking at the WAP. IDF, had some weird names with nothing to identify it on a map, we even discovered one they didn't know about which they had to name on the spot, so at this point you either knew about it or you didn't, good luck with that. Device, it's a WAP... Not sure why the IT guy needs it labeled with WAP on it they can tell by just looking at it... Patch panel, and port, needed info to find it on like the 4 racks of full of panels they had... Switch, I guess they need to know which switch it connects to from the WAP? But, that can be prone to suddenly change if the switch goes bad or something... Switch Port, same as wanting to know which switch its on, but that is prone to change on a whim which we had on pretty good authority they were going to do a complete forklift of the switches they had with new ones... So about 6 months or 8 months from then EVERYTHING we did was going to be wrong when they change out the switches. We did what they wanted... And left feeling very dirty and unclean doing it...
We do the label along with testing like you do at the end whenever possible, but seldom do we get the opportunity to do it... Practically all Large job clients demand their own custom labeling scheme thinking it is going to make things easier. But, holy gesus... When they add in that one cable they forgot for like a camera or a WAP in like a 100-200+ cable install things come to a halt for bit while we have to make notations for it and also wait for the client to RE-NUMBER it on the spot, and that's if were lucky even if the number they use just totally messes us up. I've come across many a place that you can look at the label and when you go to the patch you can't tell where it is, you would be looking for B-1030(B is like the room not the patch panel), you would go and spot B-1028 B-1029 and then B-1031... No idea where B-1030 went... tone it out and find it's on a completely separate rack unmarked or something, or not even in the same IDF, which just gives you that urge to murder the person who did that if you ever found them...
    Well again, like your videos...

You could just use a sharpie to label each cable box and and then pay attention to which ones get terminated where.

I disagree with not plugging in all ports. Disable it in/at the switch.

I agree that "Disable it in/at the switch" is the best way but some businesses don't buy enough switches to plug in every jack. A good managed switch is costly !! Most small businesses don't have the IT staff to program a switch .

I done cable as a contractor for " Spectrum" & " Cox". So coxial not ethernet. Only time I was installing ethernet was when I would install the modem to the router. But I'm seriously thinking about going this route. Also do you really have to go to college for this?.

You don't need to go to college. for this type of information college is a waste!

I,m interested in watch label machine you use to do your labeling because i use brother p touch and if i print rm 218 it seems to waste alot of labeling wondering what you suggest thanks

I also use P-Touch . I print a batch of numbers all at the same time. Then after I print them, I cut them up, put them in a box pick out what I need.
