Hi Jim! Firstly, I'd like to thank you for all the quality material that you put out there. I started watching your videos about 2 years ago. I just so happen to somewhat inherit a low voltage company after a business partner walked away. I was very new to the industry and scared out of my mind about not knowing the lingo, the correct way of doing things, etc. But your videos gave me the confidence along with putting my head down and trying to learn as much as I can. Today, I'm the sole owner of a successful low voltage business that started out doing only cctv cameras, now I do intercoms, full access control, conduit work, advanced networking, cctv, and structured cabling. I just wanted to add a bit of a tid bit of trivia. From what I've read, they're called drops not because they went down the wall but because in the early days of pre-ethernet, they had token rings. It would be a single bus that ran around in the ceiling, and when you needed another connection into the ring, you would literally add a clamp that pierced into the bus wire and hung from the ceiling. Especially with cubicle style offices. Keep up the great work. I always love watching your videos!
Another consideration is fiberglass insulation inside a wall, it can make running cable down from a plenum into an exercise in frustration.. this is a real good video on the business of running cable.
Great video.. I have worked for myself as a IT contractor for about 7 years now.. I bid on jobs thru 2 websites.. these are small jobs.. but the pay can be great.. everything from network drops, security cameras, POS systems, ect. But I'm at the bottom.. other companies get the job and I get the job from them.. I want to cut them out and bid as their competition.. I just applied for a LLC.. I'm waiting for it to get approved now.. hopefully I can find a way to bid on projects like they do..
I have not used any website to find new customers. of course I use my own website to generate leads. Some of the things that I have used in the past has been going to local chamber of commerce events and passing out business cards, knocking on doors of Microsoft dealers and offering my discounted services. Calling IT departments at large corporations, calling local government IT offices and offering my services at small IT meet ups. I am working on another video on how to generate leads. I work for a company that provides Low Voltage work to another company which is a very LARGE company as a matter of fact one that pretty much anyone even looking at this shops t or will shop at and they have me do LV work and I like it and want to learn more but can't seem to find a straight answer whether or not I must be certified. I live in Washington State if that makes a difference. I think with the size of the company we provide services for, if required, they would make sure we know.
Hi Jim, we are an IT company in NY and do cabling. Do you have any tips on how to get cabling jobs? All of my cabling work I do now comes from existing IT clients. I would love to be doing more cabling job but I have no idea how to get them. If you do consulting maybe we could set up a call I wouldn’t mind paying for this advice. Thanks.
I would but I no longer have those contracts. I sold my cabling company about a year-and-a-half ago to a competitor who also has my database and all my documents. Besides think that my contract is probably is going to be different than what you need because of laws in different states. I will do some research. Some of these concepts are in my "business sense" podcast on this youtube channel.

Make friends with real estate leasing agents. try going to the local Chamber of Commerce and passing out your business card. Make sure your business card clearly marks what your business does.

would you say 1 drop is one outlet? or one keystone? Because some outlets have 2 keystones, sometimes 4 per outlet.
One drop is a cable pull. An outlet can have several cables.
