If you think you need to be an absolute master of your instrument to write or share music then you're missing the point of music.
Keeping tempo and remembering how to play the songs you actually co-wrote is different. I agree that you can be successful while being average.

They were kids back then but Lars knew better than them when it came to signing a contract. He made sure to keep ownership of the music in some capacity thats why he was so upset over Napster. I can’t understand how someone can play the drums for so many years and somehow progressively get worse at it.
Because you clicked a video that told you Lars was a bad drummer without any sort of comparison. Compared to a lot of drummers in more famous bands he is just as good or better. For example take Charlie Watts from the Rolling Stones, do you think he outshines Lars. Nope.
Lars is a cry baby and a whinny little bitch but it is unfair to say he just flat out sucks as a drummer. I think he falls into the decent drummer category while people like Mike Portnoy are on a completely different level.
evilcowboy never said he flat out sucks. I said he’s played for many years and progressively got worse. Like if you listen to him in earlier albums or live shows he was fairly solid. Still iffy but now he can hardly keep simple time on songs they have played for years. I’ll say I’ve seen them live and he seemed to do pretty fine. But it just seems like he takes a LOT of rehearsing to get there. And yes he definitely seems like a pain to deal with.
Agree 100%. It has a lot to do with his age and not being in proper shape. The older you get, the harder it is to stay in playing shape. Add to that Lars never had the greatest technique and would always just muscle the notes in. He doesn’t have the conditioning anymore to do that.
Touring all the time doesn't really allow time for practice and self maintenance. Yes, they are playing their songs but there's a difference between practice and performance.

Started listening to metal with Metallica "Wow ! That drummer is good!". Half a year later, started listening to Sepultura and Morbid Angel "Ok, Lars Ulrich really isn´t that good ..:" And i´m a bad drummer ! So Mustaine was right (for once) ....
He’s not a good drummer, but he gets too much slack imo. He definitely has his… bad moments… but all around he at least gets the job done. I really do think people need to lay off Lars at least a bit.

Nah with custom moulded in ears with the max attenuation filters in them you’d definitely have to raise your voices a lot to hear each other. They block a lot.
Also neither Hetfield or Lars are gonna wanna mess around putting his in ear out and back in constantly (which would also wear them out more) or blow his voice out shouting all day to be heard.

loved Lars for many years, The drums on those records were solid. Lars lost recongnision as a pro player because he stoped learning when fame was reached. He's truly a very un skilled drummer

Lars Ulrich is a bad drummer for the level he is playing at. He would be a decent drummer for a local band doing club gigs. But at the level Metallica are on and for the prices they charge for live shows he is absolute garbage.

@@steph0maddox He is a very bad drummer for the level he is playing on. But without him as a person they would not be the same band. Also, he was once a very legit Thrash Metal drummer in the 80's and 90's and his skill only degraded since the 2000's. These days he only is a shadow of his former self.
burt turdison hmm I wonder why and yea I’ve been a Metallica fan since the beginning and sometimes he gets hit together I’m a drummer too and I’ve seen way way worse . I’m sure everyone gets a little too messed up to play on tour or maybe did back in the day. Who knows but he’s still hanging in so respect for that and if you’ve seen the crowds they are still pulling in at concerts it’s phenomenal. One of my friends builds the stage for them . I get some great pics cause he’s also a photographer for them

He's not taking control of the beat like a drummer should, I think he's trying to play along to the guitarists strumming as if it's a metronome.
that’s how his playing has always been, his drumming was symbiotic to james playing
Metallica is unusual in the sense that the band relies on James' rhythm guitar for timing rather than the drummer.
@@blpptkinda like with the Beatles and how Ringo basically relies on the rest of the members singing and playing as like a metronome even more difficult when it comes to live performances because when they performed on the Ed Sullivan show Ringo had to rely on their body movements because he couldn’t hear them
