I’m a disabled 20 year retired veteran and I can say after reconstructive knee surgery the ultrashift is much better for my left knee. I can float gears with the best of em, but you gotta come to a stop at some point.
I can appreciate and understand why people choose manual or automatic transmissions. Everyone has a reason for liking what they like. Doesn’t matter what transmission you have, if you have a sleeper or a day cab, ant eater front end or square, drive a kenny or a pete. We’re all out there with a love for the road and the satisfaction of backing into a tight spot. Drive safe, give a wave, blow the horn for the arm pump, and never stop hauling.
If I was to ever buy another truck it would be the 18 speed automatic 👍🏻 my knee is sore from years of clutching and the automatic is probably more efficient these days, thank you for showing us this beautiful truck 😎
I am a new truck driver and my knee was bugging me just from a couple weeks of double clutching I was happy to find out that most of the trucks in our automatics
Another thing to everyone who sees your videos, I recognize you are not the typical salesman. Whether it was Tim Ghorley or others, everyone highly recommends you and your finished products. The service and ability to be reached after the sale must be second to none. The thought put into what you sell, from extra insulation for extreme temps, to arctic wrapped fuel lines and problem free Davco fuel filters speaks volumes. Long story short, you know your shit and must be good to deal with. That's not common in today's world. It seems once the taillights disappear, that's the end usually. Oh, and crankin' out bitchin' trucks doesn't hurt either. Kudos to you and your men who work for/with you.
Steve is right. He gets feedback from 100's of direct customers. Taking your mind of of one thing like knowing which gear your in our shifting up or shifting down or pushing in the clutch or letting the clutch out. Man this is a big weight off your mind. Concentrating on traffic is number one.
I was a die hard manual transmission man. Until I actually started driving and owning trucks with an automated transmission. I love it!!! Love you videos Steve. I’m planning to come talk to you in the next few years when I’m ready for a new truck or maybe two. 👍
Beautiful truck. Great video. Keep hearing and listening to that call of the wild to go back out over the road. Been to the Kenworth dealer. Next stop, the Pete dealer.
Steve, I think this looks fantastic! This will be my truck when I come see you for my build! I will get the 18 speed manual, but other than that...You knocked it out of the park with this build!
If a automated manual is your thing that’s fine. However, if they’re going to do that they might as well put the gear selector on the turn signal arm like on the 579. Just do away with the pedestal in the floor all together.
I’ve been in a 10 speed automatic now for just about three years, pulling tankers through the Sierras and the Cascades. My only gripe is when I get to a customer on rough ground, I have trouble with traction. I would buy one of these in a heartbeat if it wasn’t for my application being in agriculture and feeling like I would get stuck. I am very glad that these automatics are coming to main stream, they are remarkable when ran correctly and given a chance
Beautiful truck, even if it is automated 😂. Be nice if they used a different method than that “tower” for the trans. If you’re not going to have the stick, at least have the room.
Steve I worked 30 years for Iowa DOT on highway maintenance and in that 30 years I drove many trucks which where anything from a five and four , ten speed, thirteen, eight speed and four and six speed automatic and my last truck was a 10 speed auto shift which was by far the best transmission/truck I ever ran. It was programmed just right and worked beautiful for all task including plowing and ice blading snow! If I ever bought a truck for hauling short distance/local it would be the Ten auto shift and 18 speed auto shift over the road. Tell your customers to drive one before giving up on a Auto Shift !
Thank you for the great input. I still sell 90-1 manual to automated but the auto customer is out there. Notice how all the manual guys say they would NEVER drive an automated but you never see an automated owner talk trash on a manual? Cultural differences I guess....
If you played baseball, your batting average would be through the roof! You continue to knock them out of the park. As far as the automated 18 goes, some like them and have a reasoning for them (as you said), some don't. While not my cup of tea so to speak, I truly understand the need and desire. Regardless, it's still a beautiful flippin' truck! People need to realize that. Keep on keepin' on Steve. With all that said, I do have to say that I do really miss the intro from your older videos though. Great content!
i'm glad that the new stylee in white led clearance lights... that amber thing for thr last 60 +years played havoc with most color combos in the paint jobs...
Peterbilt Steve like a ride and drive something in depth, there isn’t much out there on the Internet about them, especially in the high horsepower trucks
Nice truck I would have it. The last auto box I drove was a Scania v8 topline around 2000 in Europe and if the shift is as good as that was I would jump at that box in a heartbeat. That Scania shifted like a private car and also had the retarder on the gbox.ive lived in Calgary Canada since 2004.
Oh dang I never seen that automated tower before. Looks interesting, like something out of a jet cockpit. Pretty cool forsure. Something for everyone right.
Very Very clean PETERBILT. The Color is awesome. Do build C-Class Tow Trucks looking to build another (Rotator) last one built was from Miller Industry out of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Back in 2018. Thanks
This is a super car!!!I work as a trucker and shoot videos about my work to earn money for such a truck. We have very few American trucks in Russia, especially in good condition. But I'll buy one someday
Steve, I couldn't agree with you more on the ultra shift. The first auto I drove (2010 model) I was one of those "This is a girls truck" guys. Didn't like it at first. But I tell you what, after about six months I got to liking if quite a bit. In stop and go traffic they are great. Subsequent models the shifting got MUCH improved. I agree with what you said. Just let it go guys. To each their own.
Thank you for another great video and for mentioning the rear gear set. I have a question for you that no one seems to want to answer. With a rear gear of 3:25 like you said and and 18 speed with a last ratio of .72 or .73 probably, does that make the over all final ratio approximately 2.25?
I started on a manual transmission and then got an automatic. Once you get down the order of operation for it you can make it boogie. I thought it was simpler and safer.
Beautiful truck but I've always wondered something. If someone wanted to have the ultrashift in a 389 but not the Johnson bar, would it be possible to put the gear selector on the column with the steering wheel (like on the 567)?
Excellent question, currently no. Mechanically would it work? Absolutely, engineering has not made any attempt (as far as I know) to put that option on the table.
What ever happened to installing the light panel that attaches behind the front fender on the hood? I used to see them a lot as a kid, but have not seen them on many trucks lately. This truck is beautiful, I just had a thought.
Beautiful truck, you sure know how spec one. I've been driving for 40years and wouldn't even consider anything but an auto, never drove one but I feel I would have a hard time not driving it more aggressive. How much for this beauty?
Steve do you have any data or reliable feed back that suggests that a 567 with 565/2050/18 speed does any better on fuel than a 389 equipped the same way?
I don't know how long this Coronavirus thing will last, but DOT just suspended the hour limits for truckers, Maybe the EPA should suspend the emission requirements on trucks so they're more reliable and the truck builders should put out some less expensive no frills rigs, so more people could get on the road and get the job done, cause chrome don't get ya home. Just saying.
Have to ask how do you guys measure the wheelbase on the trucks? I live in Norway and here it's measured from the center of the front wheel too the center of the middle aksel
Put my name on it, she is a beauty Steve. It would look good in the grain line at the elevator. I don't know what I would do without a clutch. Now, just get corn and soy prices out of the pits and into the money so we can do it. :)

Peterbilt Steve. Tim bought his long wheel base from you Steve. That was a beautiful truck.

Yeah what's up with that, on the steering or like Volvo on the side of the seat works. In the dash, not so much fan of that
Exactly. That’s such a waste of space.
You can get seat mounted but not on the Atlas seat. I personally would give up the floor space for a more comfortable seat
I was sold on the automated, until I seen the tower.

No its about $8k more

The newer 389's that have the def fuel tanks, I'm not seeing any with the straight exhaust. Is that because of emissions?

Is there a difference in fuel mileage between the automated and manual
It's kind of hard to say because how you drive the manual makes a very big difference. The automated will shift consistently for fuel millage. If your careful shifting the manual there pretty close if you feel the need to rap it out to 2100 RPM before you shift and floor it coming up to a long climb the automated will eat your lunch.
