    The lapidary space needs guys like you. Equipment prices are absurd. Very interesting work!

      Only absurd because people actually pay those prices for such tools. If people weren't buying them, they wouldn't be so overpriced.

    Not trying to tell you your business or seem smarter or whatever. I’ve just fooled with a lot of electronics. That P supply should have way more ventilation. Like a computer fan or two … just trying to hopefully help you add some years to your 5 in one gem machine .. hope it helps ya some bro

      i have been running it for a year without issue. you can always make something better of course but the goal was to make something cheap and easy and i decided fans weren't worth the added space and cost and its been fine without them. its not running like a cnc machine where it runs at high power and speed for hours. it either runs at high speed for short periods of time or slow speed for long periods. its intended use is not pushing it anywhere near the point where fans are necessary

      Make sure to tighten collect good if left to slip it will be ruined.

      I have tested mine with an IR thermal thermometer and can confirm for typical use it barely exceeds room temperature. I think those commenting about how this needs a fan are coming from a CNC background which is the intended use for this spindle and power supply and under those circumstances, where its running at high speed for many hours nonstop, they would be correct but that's not how its being used in this situation. For polishing, grinding or lapidary, its running for only a few minutes before being paused for tool change or whatnot. It never has a chance to get hot. That said if I am running it on a job longer than normal, I sometimes position an external fan directed at the rear vent and it seems sufficient.

    Thanks for watching guys! This video seems to be getting some views and looks like it might end up being my most popular video to date if the trend continues. I have been told that YT wont suggest videos to a larger audience unless it receives 2000 likes . This is the first video i have ever made where i think that target might actually be possible, so if you wouldn't mind helping me get this to 2000 likes i would really appreciate it. Im really curious if that myth is actually true..Also please consider subscribing as i have lots of similar content in the works. thanks again! EDIT: I FINISHED AN EVEN BETTER VERSION WITH EVEN MORE USES!!!! You can find the updated version here. ua-cam.com/video/xE7654RbFh0/v-deo.htmlsi=Ysh9un75F964N0xa

    I was thinking the same thing about the power supply. While you've been using it for an extended period of time, the added heat build up may shorten the life of the unit. I love this build! There's no limit to what you can do with it!

    • @sweetgumnyc7794

      its been working fine for a year now. i use it every day.

      @@sweetgumnyc7794
      I think you’re missing the point… they’re not suggesting that heat build up will make it not work at all. The fact that it’s “worked fine for a year” doesn’t mean that it will still work fine the day after tomorrow, or a year from now. But if a small amount of ventilation can prolong the life of the power supply (especially since you’ve completely glued its enclosure shut), wouldn’t it be worth considering?
      $75 for a machine that lasts 5-10 years is always better than $75 for a machine that lasts 2-3.

    This is great advice, you're actually bring a service to ppl not just recycling content. hearing those prices makes me glad I got my little old Aussie made 3-1 for $100 motor and all, it's got a little cutting disc, grinding wheel and flat polish pad of the side of the grinder. It's also a good idea to talk around the lapidaries, the more hands on guys some time trade and move machines around when some old fellas retire, it can help to be in the loop if you don't mind waiting and asking for stuff to come up

    I would recommend that this power supply needs more ventilation and access to it, if it needs repair. Other than that this is one handy device. 👍

    • @sweetgumnyc7794
      @sweetgumnyc7794  11 місяців тому +2

      thanks . i was trying to balance ease of construction vs ease of repair and figured since the entire spindle kit is 75 bucks and the only thing i can imagine failing would be the power supply, i figured it would better to permanently seal it to prevent water leaks. regarding the venting, that too i decided to limit to only the back to prevent water getting inside. if i ever need to take it apart i could just crack off the top and just glue it back together but at 75 bucks total cost im not too worried about it.

    can you please answer or someone that does.and knows. Can you use it just like a hi -tech or like the flat lap machine you have. is it the right rpm? isn't the proper speed 1200 rpm..i know you showed it but,im just questioning a few things before i buy the motor as for i just want to use it as a flat lap and a saw . im worried about the right rpm for stones? and could it honesty run a 8 inch diamond disc and backing plate for a long time all day as long as motor is being cool,say a fan?i have it ready to order,just worried it's to much to be used as a flat lap and not proper and is it low rpm ..not sure how motor work,thanks for sharing-mike

    Okay, this looks awesome! I only have one issue, sorry. Is it me, or is there a slight wobble? I feel like there is too much deviation from center. I could be wrong, since I am somewhat visually challenged

    • @sweetgumnyc7794

      naw it spins true, the polishing disk i was using is torn so that could explain a little wobble or maybe the table. i needed to film on a folding table because i didnt have room to film on my normal work desk so the table for my video was a little shaky.

    You mounted with two brackets. It is sold with only one bracket. Do you need two brackets?

    • @sweetgumnyc7794
      @sweetgumnyc7794  8 місяців тому +2

      you can mount it with only one but if you have a 3d printer wait because im almost done with a 3d printed version thats gonna be better.

      I assume you have not put up a part list and link to the vector files because of this 3D-printed version coming out? I would love to see this new version of your project. Should I still purchase the same spindle motor referenced in the video?@@sweetgumnyc7794

    Only problem is working with many rocks you need constant water running over the rocks to not produce rock dust that can actually in some cases. Kill you. Or make you very sick. I get it that some things are expensive. Its why I made my flat lap out of a potter wheel by VEVOR for $99.99 and drilled a tiny hole and put a 1/2" flat washer in the center to hold the disk in place. Ive done at least 150 rocks of making pendants and earrings on it so far. I can still even use it for a pottery wheel if I like. I made a drip system from a 5 gallon bucket that runs water constantly onto the diamond flat lap 8" plates. The disk can take all the way upto 12" plates if I need to. Thats a bit expensive though. I also use a glass grinder for $60.00 on rocks edges sometimes. Then for my rocksaw. There is this $95.00 cheapo rock saw that comes with all kinds of add ons that you can use as a Dremel etc. polishing wheel. It's actually built like a tank. I was seriously impressed with not having to buy a $700 rock saw for small cutting stones. Larger stones upto about 5" I use a wet tiles saw and a diamond blade. That all I really needed to get started. I'm just worried on how you will keep water out of that motor there or not create horrible rock dust.

      you could add water to what i built very easily. like i said i already have a flat lap so i didnt need to. the idea is of this being better over everything else im aware of is the versatility. i could have built a flat lap for even cheaper, but this is a flat lap, a lathe, a saw, a tumbler and a polishing machine and much more actually.

    Oh man, a couple decades ago I was interested in jewelry crafting, still have a bunch of uncut stones, but never had the equipment to do anything with them. Now, though, I have a 3D printer... 🤔

      @sykseer A better design choice overall, for sure, but I can't blame him for using what he's got. Plus, anyone who has both a 3D printer and the mindset to build their own lapidary tools should be able to CAD up the simple mounts necessary here, after being inspired to do so.

      HI THANKS! yea i will be posting vectors soon. i just wanted to add a couple additional features before i posted them..for one i want to add a splash guard for the saw as well as the final file for the radial brushes for the jool tool...those i actually laser cut so i would like to include them in the file because if you need to buy those , that alone is almost 75 bucks!..mine you just stick sandpaper on the bottom.

    its the collet to motor connection that bugs me about these.
    personally...
    i already have them, anyway lol... ER collets on 150mm shanks. angular contact bearings preferably. bunch of round belt pulleys. isolate the motor from the spindle, with a few different speed ranges besides the controller. large wheels, better to rely on a reduction to limit the top speed...
    seeing the four jaw, on an arbor, in a collet, stuck to a shaft with a grubscrew is sort of amusing...the less connections the less vibration and load on the bearings...

    I don't understand how they charge $600 for a saw which is just a reconfigured $80 angle grinder. Then they charge another $600 for a lap machine which is the same thing. There's just no reason it should cost anywhere near that.

    • @user-tu5dj6xr8c
      @user-tu5dj6xr8c 5 місяців тому

      its because its specialized equipment. The angle grinder companies sell a lot more grinders than the lapidary companies do so they can scale up their process more..If you wanna see mark ups, try looking at medical equipment. a laser cutter from china can cost under a $1000, for bacially the same components but configured for medical use, they want like $300,000

      @user-tu5dj6xr8c 5 місяців тому +2

      i like to do lapidary and i absolutely will not spend that kind of money on lapidary machines.. you can do a lot of lapidary on a drill press, angle grinder or even by hand if you want..Your comment is idiotic. Youre either a manufacturer of lapidary equipment or your trying to justify to yourself why you spent thousands of dollars on machines you just saw a $75 machine do.
