  • This is my spoiler free review immediately after finishing my very 1st playthrough of Withering Rooms! I'm on a mission to beat 100 video games every year since 2020, and I usually either play the newest releases or go back and pick up franchises I've missed out on over the years. What game should I play next?

I Would have to disagree with the "not being able to avoid damage" claim. I found that using the back step alongside with heavy attack allows you to get hits in without getting hit yourself, and with enemies that specifically doesnt work with, like the heavy zombie, you can dodge roll behind him and get hits in because he takes longer to turn around. Heavy attack seems to be crucial to close distance after a dodge though but it does seem with enough practice you can fight enemies without eating hits

Please do a hitless run then cuz i know thats bs. Yes you can dodge some enemies but not all. Its a pain getting hit when its out of your control

Eh, sometimes you're right. But the giant flamethrower guys are nearly impossible not to take multiple hits from. The fly spawning guys are wide enough that you can't use the I frame item to roll through them without damage, so there will definitely not be hitless runs 😂

Lol i totally agree on the combat, the game is interesting but like you said its clunky. Its annoying getting killed havimg to go farm items again too

I will say this much, you are the very first review I’ve come across that was more critical of this game than positive about it. I’m not joking, every other video I’ve seen so far had a lot more nice things to say. Does that mean your take is invalid, absolutely not, just means you had your own experience that was how you felt about the game like everyone else did. I will say the combat did look a bit clunky and it doesn’t help that I haven’t seen any melee weapons in gameplay videos so far that have length as enemies can be twice to five times the players size, so having longer spear like weapons would help too. The dev team have been updating this game since early access in 2022 so maybe they will tighten up the combat in due time.

Pretty fair. I'd still say it's a good game, but the combat keeps it from being amazing.
I finally learned to dodge the huge fat guys by backstepping on their swings. But some others were rough. The giant flamethrower guys were miserable. If they flame while walking at you, three dodge rolls and you're still burning. Get close, and they will turn to burn you anyway. I think that enemy was most annoying.
And then the weirdo fly spawning guys. They are wide enough that even with the i frame roll item, you still can't dodge their body which is a hitbox even when not attacking.
I ended up finding the right combo of things to use an ax that did it's natural bleed, poise, and physical, but then also had fire, poison, paralysis, and vampirism. There was no incentive not to just stand there and whack things. 😂 Combine that with enchanted armor plus Horace, and I beat some of the end game bosses without healing items.
I liked the atmosphere, the questing, and the story well enough. It wasnt a $70 game, so I'd recommend it.

I loved this game right up until the first time I died in Chapter 3. It went downhill fast ater that. Having to grind to regain all the useful items you lose, which takes FOREVER, all so you can get randomly killed and be forced to do it all over again is absolute torture. The "lose all items" mechanic is honestly terrible. It slams the game to a halt.

Can confirm. Combat sucks so bad it ruins the whole game.
