Peter as a beginner to the game the issue I have is nerves when playing against people or when as a solo player people allow you to play through and they are watching, I tend to do all the things I shouldn't but on my own I don't worry about it and tend to get by ok at least as a beginner.Hearing you talk about your own experiences of nerves is really helpful. I will definitely try the things that you mentioned when I next get out with a group. One of my local courses the 1st hole tee is right in front of the club house where people sit out on a balcony watching it is very intimidating. Last time I played it I sliced my tee shot and landed on the 18th
Johnathon Andrew - developing your pre-shot routine will help, as well as swinging a bit slower to maintain your control. Thinking about these things help me to close out irrelevant stuff (eg, other people)
I just started experimenting with using singing(in my head ,or very quietly ) during my shots, and so far it's been working. After looking it up online singing is neurologically benificial by releasing endorphins in the brain which reduces stress and anxiety, and helps connect your left and right lobes of your brain. You may look like a bit of nutter singing to yourself, but it is better your drive one or two fairways over. I also recommend pre shot routines....if singing doesn't tickle your fancy😃
I certainly believe that having the intention to play a certain shot is not reserved just for the best golfers. Learning to play the course and in particular, the shot that is in front of you, is key to playing better golf. By committing to the shot you are about to play, from pre shot routine to execution. You are better able to accept the out come, especially if you get a horrible bounce. You can't control how the ball bounces or runs, but you can control your approach to the shot initially. I love the mind game of golf and course management and the story you tell yourself around the course as you play, and practice etc, is crucial to your overall success or failure.
I have a Help for Heroes charity match tomorrow and I hate being wathed doing anything, that is why I want to thank you for such a timely video. Cheers Pete.
I am not to bad on the first tee but would you Have any advise for when playing well and coming round to the last 3 holes and finishing the job off I struggle with that more than anything
Peter - really enjoying your instructional videos out on the course. Helps keep things in perspective and the positive visuals of you hitting good shots has helped my game in areas where I have struggled. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Thank you for discuss this topic a bit. I have really bad tee box anxiety, I struggle tremendously with driving and my anxiety triples when people are waiting and watching. This video helped, I will focus more on the points you make.
That last tip I think is the best of them all. It's easy to lose perspective when you have lots of eyes on you. As long as you can take a breath and realize it's a game, the rest gets easier. Love the tips and Video 😁🏌️
Really interesting topic. I've been starting my rounds with consistent double bogeys and it usually takes me up until the third hole to be able to get a par! I'll be working on directing my attention better- I tend to underestimate how much that helps.
A month ago I had to tee off in front of my new boss, his boss, another executive. The 4 some teeing off next and two starters. Did not hit the range beforehand. I had so much adrenaline / nerves I couldn't even feel the club and just swung numb. Somehow put it in play. Luckily everyone was pretty chill and we played since. Only 4 golfers in the office.
I've commented before about the book, but I think a good resource on how to combat first tee nerves and how to improve your overall mental game strength, would be to read "Golf is Not a Game of Perfect" by Dr. Bob Rotella (Not a plug, just wanting to help out my fellow golfers.) It has helped me out a ton recently. Along the lines of thinking correctly about a shot, I worked a PGA tour event a few years back and was walking the course with Geoff Ogilvy and his caddie. We came to a short par 3 with a big run off on the left. We were chatting and I said something to the effect of "it's an easy hole as long as you don't go left." His caddie pulled me aside later and asked me to not say anything like that while i was with them because he wanted Geoff to picture where he should be hitting the ball, not where he shouldn't be hitting the ball. Definitely coincides with what you were describing when you mentioned thinking things like "don't go in the bunker." Your body can't help but be pulled in to hitting it towards the bunker because that's all your brain is thinking about. It's almost like the brain doesn't understand the word "DON'T." Enjoyed the video as always Pete. Keep it up!
I’ve just today, switched from outcome based thinking to process based thinking. I can’t explain how amazing the difference was. Shot -5 (from my hc) after having a run of over par rounds. Visualising the shot, trusting you are able to hit it and finally focusing on the job at hand, rather than thinking of just hitting the ball to a certain spot, not only removed the nerves but the negative thoughts if I hit a bad shot. Always thinking of a process, focussed my mind and body to enact what I have practiced to replicate a “good shot” and also eliminated the “need” to hit the perfect shot. Thanks for all the help Pete. You’ve really helped me to increase my enjoyment of this amazing game
Great idea I think most people will benefit from on course tips (handling nerves/ being under pressure/ course management/ walking from the tee to your ball after hitting a bad shot)
Another great lesson Pete! For me, first tee is all about having a routine. Practice the same routine for every shot and apply it at the first tee as well.
Great blog Pete sorry I dont get nervous on the tie, was playing in week end golf trip played first round had a meal and few drinks after the first day got up in morning feeling a bit bad (to many drinks) got a phone call in the morning saying we were tieing off right now got changed went to the tie couldn't even stand up straight seeing two balls every body doing the football chant water on the left trees and out of bounds on the right hit it straight down the middle of the fairway there faces was a picture Jaws on the floor ⛳
I don't often comment on vids but couldn't leave this one after the weekend massive thanks to you over first tee and positive thinking. Because of you was 2 under at one point finish 3 over 43 points and now thinking given some more of this and time I can get to scratch
I used to get nervous when I played tournaments but for a normal round not so much I am excited to play since I don't get to play as much as I'd like too!! Great advice Peter!!
Great video to watch, especially when I'm on the opening day of my member guest. My game is doing well but trying to get the mental part of it better. Hopefully I can do that, and these videos are really starting to help! Thanks Pete
Peter, while watching the Open i cant help but wonder why you arent in the field. You have the complete game. Even if you didnt make it to the weekend you could hang with these guys. A few lucky bounces and who knows what kind of run you could get on.....
Great video, Pete... Also, all of your content has been fantastic. Been subscribed since the beginning and its been an increasingly enjoyable journey and I've learned so much.
Interesting topic for a vlog and one that I doubt many folk consider and work on, me included. I'm not too bad off the first tee but certain holes give me nightmares and that's where I really need to work on the nerves / mental approach to the game. Slow progress so far but still making progress! Cheers
I think playing with a group, naturally you want to perform if you are competitive. You can feed off it too, if you are used to it. If you are not, it’s that positive menta attitude and perspective that will help you play well. What always helped me - smile when you feel nervous. Helps associate the feeling with more than brown trousers.
Usually on the first tee I try and go first. We don’t flip a tee so if I’m ready ( which half the time I’m not) I just go and tee it up. But I need to control my breathing like you suggested. I think that’s key and will give it a try more.
If you knew how powerful your thoughts were, you would never have a negative thought again. So hard to maintain during a round. Something I've been working on a lot. Great video!
I feel like I have nerves off the tee until I hit a good shot then I finally relax, thanks for the video I'm going to try this and hopefully get out of my head a little bit, watching your videos along with Rick's and matt fryers I've dropped 50 strokes since my first round still haven't broken 100 yet but I feel it happening soon
Focus on a word that creates a good flow through your swing. I use the word zip. Saying it slowly as you take the club back and then speed it up on the down swing focuses your mind. I got this tip from a sports psychologist. It is amazing how well it has worked for me.
I've generally heard of using a 2 syllable word or 2 words but whatever works for you. I say super fluid, super on the way back, fluid through. Something my grandpa taught me
As always love the vid Peter!! Keep it up!! 🔥🔥🔥 I really like these kind of walkthrough vids because I feel like I can benefit from your experiences even though it's only been 2 years I've been playing!! 😊 I dropped 20 shots since last season thanks to you and other golf creators!! 🏌️♂️🎥 Hope to be playing just as good as you one day 💪🔥 Keep up your great work!! And ... GO KIM!!! ...again 😂
I am usually scrambling to get to the course on time, get there about five minute before, run in to pay, get to the tee box, take five practice swings to warm up, then feel nervous on the first tee box. I have found that I hit my best when I focus on tempo and a smooth swing. That helps me with some of my nerves, because I know that if I swing smooth Ill make good contact and hit it well. I used to be super nervous, then try to hammer a drive and slice it or hit low off the heel and it goes about 75 yards.
If you hit every green in regulation it would be 2 or less putts per green, 36 putts or less per round to shoot par or under. Me personally I will usually shoot under par if I have 30 or less putts a round.
I always try to think that any swing I do will be super quick so i just try to think about slowing everything down (including breathing!) - ultimately I will still swing quicker than I want but it won't be wild! 👍
Really good video Pete first tee nerves😬ha ha always a funny one that👍I'm not to bad but ive seen others petrified in comps or society comps, head down and rip it😉⛳🚀🏌️♂️easy ha ha
First tee stress has become less of an issue for me, it’s more the stress during a round after missing a shot. I drop concentration and my mental game. Yes, very important you must breathe on the first tee. If this an important match, you must hit just few balls first . If not morning ball, mulligan will work.
First tee nerves don't bother me much. It's usually a solid drive. I have a problem turning 9. I've been out in 1 over the last 3 rounds, but start to lose it on the back 9. One bad hole and I can't shake it. Keeping focus is a problem.
This video comes one day too late for Rory McIlroy ;) No just kidding ofc, I guess we all had these bad first tee shots. Great video with helpful tips, I will try them out :)
Exactly what you need to do..I always had this problem...but I feel that if you are on the range before teeing off...I would just picture the first hole...take my last few balls and act it out. I then take my last ball and tell myself this is my 1st hole tee shot. The only problem is if I hit it bad then I have gotten that shot out of the way . ..and hope it doesn't happen again. I still would love a cap..with your autograph on it..l can send you the expense funds along with my address..leave me a reply under my comment..have a great day!!..my wife still loves your eyes!!!@!
Honestly I never get nervous except when I go over water. I don't know why but all I see is thinning it and seeing it skip. And usually that's what happens.
Am I the only one who plays well on the first few holes then goes downhill from there? I've had too many games where I'm only a few over on the front 9 but so much worse on the back.
Mmmm not sure I would be have nerves running from a tiger or lion.... I think if I was running from a tiger or lion I would be showing something a little more than nerves 🤣🤣🤣

I think he made this after Rory’s start on Thursday
Sean O'Sullivan ha filmed it a few weeks ago, should have sent it over!!
Ace and that 350,whoop whoop
Did this video idea come after Rory’s 8?
Max 1 filmed it a few weeks back, should have uploaded it earlier 😂
Still better than whatever we score when were nervous.

I need to calm down after bad shots. ANy advice...cold water, zantac...? Great video
Repeat after me "Goooosefavra, Goooosefavra " , or if you're a Seinfeld fan there is always "Serenity Now"
Speaking as a complete novice that has only been playing sparsely for about 2 years and has yet to crack 100 on a par 72 course(but am steadily improving) my advice is to stop seeing bad shots as "bad" shots and see them as opportunities to practice and improve on making recovery shots. Even the best of players have bad shots, it's how you recover from those bad shots that is one of the key things that separates the good players from the novices - so as long as I'm learning from each recovery shot I take I don't consider a bad shot to really be "bad", just an opportunity to learn how to get better.
It feels great when you do manage a beautiful recovery shot. In the process of playing from bad lies I'm learning how to improve my swing form and get good strikes which in turn reduces the amount of bad shots I hit. My main issue is putting, I can read greens well but my pacing sucks and usually costs me a couple extra strokes per hole. Could probably break 85 or even lower now if not for the bad putting, but I'm working on it.
Hi Peter, who wins the Cap's from the last video? Greetings
Thorpeness is my home club it is so hard to shoot a good score with very tight fairways
I normally don't get nervous until I start playing well. When I start thinking I can beat previous scores or something like that
Yes, very important you must breathe on the first tee. If this an important match, you must hit just few balls first . If not morning ball, mulligan will work.
Have a pre game pint...always sorts me out
I got a solution, a few pints and all nerves gone Pete.
Great video by the way! Thank you :)
“Unless your SUPER CHILL MAN!” 😂 cracked me up
First tee nerves don't bother me much. It's usually a solid drive. I have a problem turning 9. I've been out in 1 over the last 3 rounds, but start to lose it on the back 9. One bad hole and I can't shake it. Keeping focus is a problem.
as a newbie. 1st tee being watched is the thing. no matter how much you dont want to tonk it along the ground, you inevatably do.
I don’t find any problems on a normal day but when it’s time for me to start my round in competition I’m done for
First hole nerves is what i get. I have learnt not to beat myself up about hitting bad shots out there
Shot you are going to hit - visualise it!!! 👍👍👍
True story!! Everyone want a good shot off the first but worst case a lost ball! Not exactly got to spontaneously die!
This is my biggest problem. I am not nervous at all in the fairway or the green. But on the tee, my heart stops.
Glenn Watson ok, I’m not a doctor but I know that’s not good...

I still would love a cap..with your autograph on it..l can send you the expense funds along with my address..leave me a reply under my comment..have a great day!!..my wife still loves your eyes!!!@!
For me, first tee is all down to technique. If you have a solid dependable golf swing, nerves will be reduced.
No matter what length the hole just hit a iron your comfortable with & build from there... no point smashing driver out of bounds on 1st hole(Rory) 😉
U shud make some iron drills
Thats James Robinsons music!!!!
Send this to mcilroy
Dylan Jenkins-K Beat me to it!! 😂
Honestly I never get nervous except when I go over water. I don't know why but all I see is thinning it and seeing it skip. And usually that's what happens.
In 41 years of golf, I’ve yet to experience first tee nerves. I’ll consider myself blessed. It’s just a game.
For me it’s the same all the time tee up nut down then get that right shoulder going, more I think more I mess up
Think you need to drop the Stenson from Stenson and Molinari after today 🤣
Michael Brown molinari will do!
I close my eyes tilt my head up breath deep, and turn on the opening to Peter Finch’s UA-cam videos...... okay that last part is a lie.
James Davis shouldn’t be a lie 😂
It is calming music I’ll give you that.
beautiful course by looks of it and many features of the area with the windmills thats what i like rather boring mundane modern courses.
You forgot to mention coffee Pete.
I never drive from the 1st Tee, my nerves rattle me. Take a 4 iron, bomb it 190m, center fairway and play for par thereafter
Benjamin Manning 👍
I’m nervous now
First comment 😊😊
Am I the only one who plays well on the first few holes then goes downhill from there? I've had too many games where I'm only a few over on the front 9 but so much worse on the back.
Don't think of a pink elephant!
And this is why we should focus on what we want, rather than what we don't.
Was waiting for "Stinson....Molinari..."
Mmmm not sure I would be have nerves running from a tiger or lion.... I think if I was running from a tiger or lion I would be showing something a little more than nerves 🤣🤣🤣
