    As a "Master Backyard Mechanic" that has done a countless amount of odds and ends jobs, I have to say, this video is VERY VERY informational (Cancer Ridden Asbestos Dust, Ancient History of Garbage Drums, Eyes Nose and Ear Pertection is very important), full of great "been on the job" tips (Take Pictures, Do one side at a time, Grease AWAY FROM WHEEL CYLINDER, White Lithium Grease) , and one of the most ENTERTAINING Automotive "How To" videos I've ever seen.
    "This tool is what you're supposed to use but go ahead and throw this into the fiery pits of hell and get yourself the god given Needle Nose Vicegrips and use your Super Human Strength..."
    Like, I hopped on the video just to see the drum setup before I dove into it and I watched the whole thing. Loved and appreciated all the editing, lighting, and Video/Audio Quality and of course, the subtle humor & memes.
    By far the best automotive how to I've ever seen. Keep up the videos, pls! 👏

    Thank you… you’re a life saver… never did VW drums before and auto slack adjustment was way too tight to start off with fresh drums and shoes. Thank you!!

    Oh, man! Your instruction about the self adjusting thing starting at 7:50 saved me! I struggled for so long trying to figure out why the drums wouldn't fit over the new shoes. Once I saw this and pushed that stupid thing back up, I saw the shoe pull in and the drum then fit over it. Job done!

    I love this video! Im 18 years old and just recently bought a used 2011 jetta as my first car. Ive been facing some problems with the brakes squeaking a bit when coming to a stop and Ive been thinking about getting it replaced. Your video was very educational and gave me insight into how this "ancient technology" works 😂

      @@JimmysAutoClinic Do you also think its possible to have a drum to disc brake conversion for the rears?🤔

    • @JimmysAutoClinic
      @JimmysAutoClinic  Рік тому

      Hey Aldrine, it is definitely possible I just don't know what is involved and what parts are required for this specific car. Sometimes it's quite simple but you just have to change the backing plate, bearing in a bunch of other components that aren't so hard to change. On some cars though you have to change out the spindle completely. I'm not sure what you'll have to do but I know it's possible.

      @@JimmysAutoClinic Theres a youtube video on it ua-cam.com/video/ZH6TfmYIXSs/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Sth91 and it seems to be pretty straightforward. Like you said the backing plate was just changed but the spindle was kept in

    • @JimmysAutoClinic
      @JimmysAutoClinic  Рік тому

      That is spectacular. There you go now you'll never have to deal with that kind of archaic technology again and you'll have better brakes:-). This is a perfect example of why we all love UA-cam.

    I started to exchange my brakes myself after getting scammed several times by an authorised VW garage, im an engineer but dont actually work on cars but ships.
    made some mistakes exchanging the brakes, pressed the brake while the brake was out causing it to spit out the brake cylinder and lost all my brake oil.
    This however was actually a good thing because:
    - found out the brake fluid that spilled out was dirty as black motor oil, and i just had paid for a brake flush and fluid replacement with the WV dealer
    - found out my brakes where not worn as previously mentioned by VW dealer that i needed urgent replacement.
    I also found out that the torx screw was damaged, possible by the VW dealer and they never opened it the last maintenance because of the brakedust that was collected on the driver side vs the passenger side.
    For now i drilled the screw out, its also a pretty poor choice from VW to use torx in this case as they easily get damaged in my field of job we use inbus as they are more robust.
    In another occasion they scammed me when i supplied the front disc brakes (quality ones) the VW dealership that does also maintenance in my city had swapped them with cheap Chinese ones that screamed after 2 weeks of use.

      Unfortunately in my industry it is not an uncommon occurrence. Unfortunately most people just don't know that it's happened to them. I will say that there are good mechanics and dealerships out there it's just hard to find them and they usually aren't very happy like myself because we do all kinds of work and definitely don't make enough money. Hopefully you found my video useful and it helps you doing your brakes yourself so you don't end up getting scammed. Sorry you had a bad experience. Thanks for sharing.

      @Jimmy's Auto Clinic HEY NO thank you my man this is going to be a life saver for me on Monday and Tuesday. I do have one quick question cause I didn't seem to find it online. Are the drums on the rear similar to a rotor where they can be resurfaced and used if they arnt used

    • @JimmysAutoClinic
      @JimmysAutoClinic  Рік тому

      You're welcome. Drums can be resurfaced but it is hard to find someone who will do it nowadays. Personally I would recommend just getting new ones instead of trying to resurface unless the price is kind of ridiculous. Then you can definitely look for someone to resurface them. It is getting rare to find someone who knows how to do it though. If you are in the Toronto area I have a person. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

    Hey this video helped so much. I got new shoes and drums in. My only problem is that my reason for changing was a thumping sound from the back when breaking. New shoes and drums fixed this issue but the sound is back. Do you got maybe an idea on why this clunking sound is happening. Changed all the springs too and put new wheel cylinders as well. Anyway love the video helps lots.

    • @JimmysAutoClinic
      @JimmysAutoClinic  10 місяців тому +1

      When is it that you usually get the noise is it under light application of the brakes or heavy application? Generally with regards to sort of clicking noise it usually indicates that brakes are out of adjustment and not properly contacting or you have warped rotors. If it fix the issue once you first did it and the issue then came back I would think that possibly the automatic adjuster is not adjusting and then the brakes over time are becoming out of adjustment which is causing the clicking sound. The adjuster could be bad or it could be your old friend rust.

    • @Chemwhiz
      @Chemwhiz 10 місяців тому +1

      It ended up being that good old friend rust lol. It always made the sound on light breaking. Ended up giving it a super good cleaning with a wire brush changing out the little pads the shoes sit on and a bunch of grease in the right spots. So far so good.

      @JimmysAutoClinic  2 роки тому

      I agree 🙂, haven't seen a kit but you can most likely get everything from the VW parts bins or from a jetta that has disc already.
