  • New production of Brian Friel's 1990 memory play about five unmarried sisters and the events that break up their family. Does it still seem like a masterpiece 30 years later? How well does director Josie Rourke cope with presenting an intimate play on the huge Olivier stage? Do Siobhan McSweeney and Louisa Harland from Derry Girls perform well on stage?
The production also stars Blaithin Mac Gabhann, Justine Mitchell, Ardal; O'Hanlan, Alison Oliver, Tom Riley and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor. The design is by Robert Jones.
Dancing At Lughnasa was performed at the National Theatre during April and May 2023.
Production photos used in this video are by Johan Persson.
Paul was given a review ticket by the producer.

An absolutely amazing play. I saw it last night . The acting was superb. Some of the most incredible actors I have ever seen. You felt like you were watching events unfold in real time.

They are NOT in Northern Ireland as you may understand it - they are in Donegal which is one of three counties in Ulster that remained in the Republic after the dreadful partition - hoping to see this production soon - it is a wonderful play

@@TheatreReviewsWithPaulSeven my pleasure - it never ceases to amaze me how little people in UK know about Ireland - I met a lady from UK yesterday and she thought Ireland had left the EU with the UK - staggering. Your review was v thorough and insightful

@@brianeduardo1234 Yes, I can only apologise for my ignorance. To save me any further embarrassment, I’ve deleted the reference to Northern Ireland from the video. Regarding the lady’s comment, Ireland hasn’t left the EU but Northern Ireland appears to have remained in it- no wonder she’s confused.

@@TheatreReviewsWithPaulSeven No, she should not be confused NI voted to stay but was dragged out of EU because entire UK vote (another legacy of partition) and Scotland voted to remain. This may come across as me being annoyed but I am not - Having watched many TV programmes down the year English people, in particular, seem to know very little about Wales,Scotland or NI when they are all supposed to be part of the same UK - extraordinary - a young English woman who visited my brother recently did not know anything about Ireland North or South and was surprised we use the Euro and our road distances are in KMs - very odd.

@@TheatreReviewsWithPaulSeven NI does not appear to have remained in EU it is out but has certain privileges because of the Border with the Republic known as the Northern Ireland protocol which gives it the best of both worlds - though listening to Unionists whinging you would not think so. It is now called the Windsor Pact or something or other. The woman from Scotland knows I live in the Republic of Ireland - no excuse! Take care and be well.
