Golden Chanel, he’s old school catholic with two daughters, in his eyes no one will be ever good enough even if they are married with kids. He was the same with the guy from the photo development shop who came for tea and met them at the cinema. He’s not a bully if you watch them all he’s not directly hostile towards the men who’s not with his daughters.
If you got stabbed in an alley in an unfamiliar city by a bunch of strangers in masks, after years of regretful service to unworthy kings, you’d be a bit annoyed too, right?
From what I've heard of Derry dads and grandpa's in general it's more likely he'll just shift what his father-in-laws been saying to him onto any serious boyfriend Erin ever has.

There's plenty of cases of abusive husband's causing their wives to be meaner to their children, or negative bosses at long term jobs to take a negative effect on a worker's personality. It's more about a lack of control that feels regained when they portray the same behaviors that made them feel powerless as they finally feel in charge & safer.

Fun fact, the café scene is not filmed in Derry or near the County Donegal/Derry border. Its in a motorway café that has been shut down for years on the way to Belfast outside the village of Toome 😀
So something I just noticed about the show is how they show parallels between each generation. Erin and her friends are basically copies of their parents. So the same would go for Mary, Sarah and their mom. The reason I mention all this is because Joe and the girls refer to their mom as perfect, so I'm thinking Mary must be like her mom in that regard and that's the ONLY reason why Gerry would put up with Joe for as long as he has. Mary must be an angel to him.
Gerry loves her. That's the only reason not to kick Joe's teeth in. And yeah..the way Mary reacts to the fella in the boot (trunk) of the car...sounded just like Erin.

Tommy Tiernan is hilarious in this show. He plays the frustrated husband/father/son-in-law to perfection.
Tommy Tiernan - one of the funniest men alive. Under-used, perhaps, in Derry Girls but he plays a great part.
The way Joe treats Gerry makes me hella mad. I can't imagine how much patience Gerry has to keep up with Joe's treatment lol

One of my best friends knows that some of the filming of the show is close to where he lives in West Belfast.
