Got mine a few days ago and it is great! Nice tool combo and the new cutter is a really useful tool that I’ve already used more than a lifetime of can opener!
I think I'll be picking one of these up to swap in a back phillips and do a scale swap as my first custom SAK build. I'm an aircraft mechanic, and I don't need a heavy duty screwdriver, but having a spare driver on me to pop quarter-turn fastners to pull panels to do quick inspections would be perfect for me!
Did exactly this myself - swapped in the back Phillips, added a wood saw layer, and put a a small screwdriver on the back layer created by the saw. Absolute perfection
@@gregwhates5948 That sounds like a Fieldmaster model, with the Saw and the phillips screwdriver instead of the corckscrew of the Huntsman. Did you do that on a Climber ? or just an added layer to a Spartan. I guess if you wanted a 3 layer knife with a saw and a phillips screwdriver it would be the Victorinox Hiker.
Usually I prefer two layer SAKs or the small ones (Rambler, Manager, Minichamp Alox). But I also like this new Vic Companion, it has almost the perfect toolset. I really like the new parcel opener, obviously the scissors, etc. A very good knife! Greetings from Germany.
Been carrying mine every day for 2 weeks and I love it. For me it's the perfect every day carry SAK. The new opener is incredible. Zips right through any kind of packaging.
how do you carry yours? I am thinking about using the neck loop it comes with even though Ive never carried a multitool that way. I was going to use the swissqlip (which fits!!!) but read that it can damage scales. If they come out with a red scale version of this I will 100% put the qlip on it. But for the new york style one I have, the scales is the point of it so I don't want to damage them.
@@EduardoLopez-tged Mine is the Swiss Spirit version so no lanyard. I just drop it in my pocket. 3 layers is ok for that; anything bigger I put on a suspension clip.
@@wvbeatlefan Do you still carry it normally in your pocket today or have you had any problems? I ordered mine yesterday, it should arrive soon. Cheers from Brasil, @SlipjointSawyer
Great SAK. Will for sure be a challenger for my Compact. Would be nice to see made available in the normal scale colours. Have ordered the Swiss Spirit version in the meantime.
I got both the New York and the Sydney. I just like the tool set, and couldn't decide between the two, so I decided I could have both. lol I really think you'll like the Sydney. It looks so good in person. I have been hanging it around my neck a bit.
The Companion is a great contender for best Viccy everyday carry. The plus scales, nail cleaner/file and the newer tool to replace the can opener 👌🏻 Was surprised to see you didn’t get the Sydney as it’s close to your channel colour! But the NY is a great looking design. Thanks for sharing buddy 🫡
Amazing tool. I will buy it and do a little custom on it. Maybe change the original bottle opener to bottle and can opener from Victorinox Compact. Great video!
Interesting tool set. I have to admit, I've used the tin opener quite a few times when out in the countryside and a ring pull has broken and I really wanted that bowl of stew lol. Incidentally, that rubbing the can on a curb... This is not so great if what's inside the tin isn't particularly solid. As a mate of mine found out when he tried it and ended up with vegetable soup all over the pavement. Apparently all his neighbours thought he was drunk and had thrown up. They had a right go at him lol.
I am over the moon that they have added the package opener . Slippy come on over to Alabama and we will play with some microtech autos and cut some watermelons with samurai sword 😊
Finally someone who isnt complaining about how these are marketed to women, I’m on the fence for one of these probably I buy the Sydney version pretty soon. This one should be a standard model from now but I do think the price is way to steep imho. It’s such a great edc item. Would be perfect if they’d ditch the blade or replace it with the cybertool bitdriver for the ultimate edc. I would carry a folding knife seperate anyway or leave that at home. Thanks for the review I’m gonna buy one..
Thank you for your awesome, in depth review! One question please: does it feel bulky in the pants pocket? I have a 4 layer Huntsman hanging from a dangler that I've tried to get accommodated to, to no avail. It's just a bit bulky for my liking, twisting and turning itself in my pocket. So at this point I'm considering the companion or the compact (companion has my preferred tools)
I want the package opener, but there are two problems for me. I hate the patterns, and I don’t like having to pay so much because of the lanyard, plus scales and pen, which I don’t need. I’m hoping they add some solid color options. The patterns irritate me so much that I’d probably have to change the scales, but then it’s even more expensive.
Installing a combo tool like in Victorinox Compact instead of a bottle opener would be the best solution. We would have the opportunity to open parcels of canned food and bottles, and not just parcels and bottles like now.
The tools are perfect EDC for me, but it's a shame there is no classic designe. Those three are too fancy. I like classic look and I think this might be the issue not only for me.
I agree but at £80 then scales you are essentially paying for a lanyard and those scales, seems bizarre to remove them just to make it look classic. Perhaps they will introduce classic scales and a price in line with others this size.
Great video as always, and a really smart knife! The only question I have is, Do you think it's worth the premium price tag? It seems a lot more expensive than the Climber, which is also 3 layers and has scissors. What do folk think?
Yo slippy, follow your channel for a while now, great fan! Is it true the do not make this model in normal colours? Greets from Uganda were i stay for a few months now
I agree the new pkg opener works good from I saw BUT it's a super tinker with different scales, a lanyard fancy box & pen. Also they doubled the price, WTF victorinox have they started over pricing their products, 😮 Victorinox used to be the best bang for the buck. Now it seems only the well to can afford them. I will treasure the knives I now own but not sure of purchasing any more, sign me disappointed 😕
Im not impressed, they could use the combo tool instead of the bottle opener. A small knife or inline philps will be much better then the box cuter. But i expect that from vic, they will put inline philips when it will get as old as the flat head. :/
I feel like I'm losing my mind. Have people been to a store? Half of canned foods still don't have pull tabs. To call the can opener obsolete is just ignorant. Also a package opener only does one thing, and that one thing can be done by a knife. A knife can do a billion things including open packages. I really don't understand why people want such a tool.
True. There is indeed still value in the can opener tool. But how many SAKs do you own that have the can opener function? So it is nice to get something new.
To be honest, mixed feelings. I have a Climber and the only thing I was missing was a hook with a file like in the Compact in addition to excellent scissors. And so I saw the brand new model and at first I was incredibly happy to see the model with a file and I really liked the new package opener because I often open boxes. BUT then I felt irritated What prevented Victorinox from combining a bottle opener and a can opener like in the Compact? Yes, I understand that opening cans happens very rarely, but... So once again a bad joke from Victorinox. They deliberately do not make an ideal and universal model, forcing buyers to make compromises and buy several knives instead of one
@@SlipjointSawyer I sharpened the can opener on my Climber, so it opens cans perfectly fine as well as boxes. Why did they get rid of the can opener? Stupid!
